Guide Review - Jay-Z - "Jockin' Jay-Z (Dope Boy Fresh) (Def Jam)
"F*ck talking about the recession, the sh*t's depressing. I rock with Obama, but I ain't no politician," Jay-Z bluntly proclaims on "Jockin' Jay-Z (Dope Boy Fresh)." Mr. Carter should consider himself lucky. If only he'd majored in politics, rivals -- and by rivals I mean Diplomats like Jim Jones and Cam'ron -- would punish him by telling everyone that the 38-year old MC is out of touch with his young constituents.
The brag-filled "Jockin' Jay-Z" emerges as an odd ball at a time when most rappers are shifting their attention to social issues. Rather than clobber the youth with rhymes about economic hardships, he opts for a, dare I say, different message: "I like money, b*tch."
Granted, it's not the savviest move to remind your fans that you're swimming in millions when some of them are so broke they can't even afford to buy CDs. That's key to Jay's worldwide appeal, though. His daily grind consists of telling people that his daily grind made him into the mogul he is today. You can't help but respect that.
Still, it would've been refreshing to see him reach outside his comfort zone and wow us again. Dope Boy Fresh? Psshh, heard it all before.
