Joe Budden has been known to bleed his heart on a track or two. It's his calling card. The style could have easily turned him into a caricature if it didn't come from such a skilled poet. Joey's latest tune, "Momma Said," sticks to a familiar script: honest and introspective.
Budden details a conversation with momma in the form of questions. What's the deal with those tats on your arms? Have you talked to your father lately? Is your girlfriend pregnant? Why can't you ever be alone? Just mom being mom.
Budden dips the hook in Auto-Tune, cutting down the song's sentimental calories. You can't see it in his eyes, so he had to make the song cry.
"Momma Said" appears on Budden's new mixtape, A Loose Quarter, out on Black Friday. Hear it below.
