How important was Heavy D to American music? So important that Al Sharpton, who's typically at odds with hip-hoppers, showed up to say his final goodbyes at Heav's funeral. So important that President Barack Obama sent a note of encouragement to Heav's 11-year-old daughter, Xea Myers.
"We extend our heartfelt condolences at this difficult time. He will be remembered for his infectious optimism and many contributions to American music," says Obama's note which D's daughter read at the service. "Please know that you and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers."
Myers told the mourners that her father was still around, "not in the flesh, but in the spirit." Diddy also tipped his hat to the Heavster, crediting him for his own success.
The funeral was held at Grace Baptist Church in Heavy D's hometown. Celebs in attendance were Will Smith, Don King, Q-Tip, Queen Latifah, and John Legend. Through tears, Johnny Gill delivered a heart wrenching performance of the gospel song "Never Would Have Made It."
Heavy D was rushed to the hospital last week after complaining of respiratory issues and collapsing in his Los Angeles home. He was pronounced dead shortly afterward. He was 44. The L.A. coroner's office is still investigating the cause of death.
