50 Cent Was Right About Graduation

Wednesday September 26, 2007

50 Cent may not know a lot about creating classic albums but he sure knows how to make industry predictions (*wink*). Throughout the Curtis vs. Graduation showdown, Fif insisted that Kanye's label Def Jam would buy no less than 200,000 copies of their own product. He also predicted that Graduation will lose 70% of its sales the second week. Ask anybody who knows anything about the industry and they'll tell you that the first claim doesn't hold water.

50's second prediction (albeit an obvious one), however, was right on target. Graduation, which docked at No.1 last week, witnessed a 76% slip in sales, according to Billboard.com. After debuting at No. 2 last week, Curtis took an even bigger blow, with a 79% dip in sales. Graduation and Curtis finished the current 7-day cycle at No.2 and 3 with 226,000 units and 143,000 units respectively.

Other big movers in the hip-hop department this week include: Chamillionaire's Ultimate Victory, which entered the chart at No.8 with 79,000 scans, and Twista's Adrenaline Rush 2007, which arrived at No.10 with a dismal 41,000 scans.

(3) Ali says:

I wouldn’t so much say he was right because he was stating the obvious. But, what you may have missed about what he said, was the fact that he would overtake Kanye in week 2 and beyond. But, that doesn’t seem to be the case at all. So, 50 is still wrong.

Graduation rocks, if you don’t have it, go get it!

Any hip-hop head that uses the word “rocked” to describe an album should be destroyed.

yeah fiddy knows about music and hw to get money out of it. of course 50’s album didn’t fare well as compared to Kanye’s, but what counts is who makes more money at the end of the day. The fact is; 50 will

This LOngshanks guy making comments on here sounds like a Real Wet Ass Puss. He’s the type of person who hates people for being real successful. He’s probably the type that wanted Michael JOrdan to lose in the finals because he had won so many in a row. The comment Longshanks made about “destroy that chi ali” was probably the gayest comment I’ve ever seen posted. Longshanks.. do yourself a favor and KILL YOSELF!

(12) $tallioni$tic$ says:

Look here my children. If you haven’t heard both albums then you can’t have an opinion. Here is how it breaks down.

I know for a fact LONGSHANKS hasn’t heard either album. He listens to Brian McKnight, but wants to have an opinion on here! What a fat pig Longshanks is!!!

Everyone knows that queers love Kanye’s concious rap.

Everyone knows the streets and the O.G.’s can relate to 50’s music.

Everyone knows that the MEAN STREETS produced RUST RECORDZ CANNIBALZ and everyone hates them because they get scared when they listen and blood pours out of their CD deck when they listened to it.

Rust Recordz Cannibalz… They don’t play… They do it the ski mask way… You might walk out of your house one day and hear some rustling in your bushes and then the on the next day when you wake up your wallet is gone and your ass and mouth are really, REALLY sore. You also remember that you were listening to Kanye before you walked outside. EEEEEEOWWWWWW

(15) dj dizzy says:

“50 Cent may not know a lot about creating classic albums”. Excuse me?? Unless Defjam is paying you, are you crazy?? If get rich or die tryin’ doesn’t make it as a classic album to you then you shouldn’t even be writing on hip-hop. Before 50, who was there? i can guarantee you if kanye dropped his debut at that time he wouldnt even have quarter of the impact 50 had. I’m from africa, and people that don’t even speak english know the name 50 cent. they know in da club.

So reading your reviews and negative comments on 50 just makes me feel ‘about.com’ chose the wrong writer on hiphop because you don’t know what you on about. Curtis is by far the better hiphop album of the two and the album sales is just because of the market right now, downloads are heavily spoiling album sales, even if Michael jackson releases another Thriller, it aint gonna sell as much as it would 10 years ago. I got Curtis and its hot, whether you in the clubs, in your car, or in your room, its a solid effort. Graduation is just a cd you listen to at home. Period.

(16) chif says:

at times i wonder what the word clasic means. from my own pespective the word classic when used relative to making an album i should believe it means an album that greatly apeals to a lot of people.so when u say 50 doesn’t know much about making classic albums that leaves me with no option but to say you know nothing about music.

who doesn’t agree that get rich or massacre is a classic album? please post your coments.

don’t get me wrong, i am not a die hard 50 fan, it’s only that i appreciate good music. i’ve listened to curtis and believe me, it is one of the greatest releases of this year. graduation was good but it’s nowhere near to curtis.if u do not have a copy of curtis in the name of clasic music i recomend u to buy it.u won’t regreat any penny you lose on it

(18) Shiban says:

dude…. r u serious?? get rich, & massacre classics??? well then again, u probably either a commercial fan, or a pop/R&B fan so i dun think ur advice on saying curtis is actually one of the best releases of the year is good, i mean even kanye’s album looks unbelievable great to fifty nd he prob. barely top ten, 50 suks man… nd so do u… go listen to rakim, KRS-ONE, 2Pac, or nas or something man, u wanna present day classic, listen to BE for common, since then i dont think anybody been comin out wit any pure classics, trust me chif, U DO NOT NO CLASSICS, PERIOD.

October 1, 2007 at 12:24 pm
(19) Shiban says:

i put “BE” in even if its from 2005 cause classics havent been out since, hip hop really is dien….

October 1, 2007 at 1:26 pm
(20) crippa says:

i agree wit some of the other comments, if you say 50 doesnt know what i classic album is then you dont know anything about rap music.

Get rich or die tryin sold over 12 million worldwide, im not sayin its a classic because of its sales, but doesnt it tell you something about the album? 12million!! not even nas or jay z came near that. Get rich was a classic album no matter what anyone says.

and about the sales, as of 2006, album sales have been verrry poor, this is all due to the digital age, with all these downloads even the late great 2pac would struggle to reach 10million.

(21) S.B. says:

@chif. Classics are determined by their ability to withstand the test of time. When a new album drops, it is fair to say ‘it sounds like a classic’ and then see what happens. True classic albums remain relevant over the years through many cultural changes. If classics were determined by album sales then you could say that the Spice Girls or some equally cheesy pop outfit made classics. What about MC Hammer? Does he rank as a classic hip-hop artist? His sales were in the stratosphere.

October 1, 2007 at 3:24 pm
(22) S.B. says:

@ Chif. Classic status is determined by an album or artist’s ability to withstand the test of time and changes in the culture, not by sales. If sales made classics then we would be here talking about MC Hammer or Vanilla Ice.

October 1, 2007 at 3:34 pm
(23) Shiban says:

if an album is determined by its sales as classic, then ur telling me “Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ‘Em” is the best rap album of all time? that its a classic in evry sense of the word? common crippa answer tht? wut does THT tell u bout the album? tht a lot of retards liked it, like a lot of retardfs like 50 now? plz answer crippa

(24) * GENIUS * says:

WHAT ARE YOU SERIOUS? 50 CONSIDERED AS A RETARD. THEN WHAT IS ALL DIS WHACK ISH ON THE RADIO , 50 IS BETTER THEN ALL THEM!

October 3, 2007 at 12:58 pm
(25) Shiban says:

im confused… r u saying 50 isnt commercial like evry1 else on the radio, or r u dssin him? if u sayin he different, then u r nmot no “genius” man, if u sayin the opposite then my apologies

October 3, 2007 at 1:50 pm
(26) BG says:

Well jeeze arent we glad Henrys opinions are an indicator of what the public’s view of good music is. lol. How can u guys say either 50 cent or kanye sucks? The opinions of a FEW people dont indicate what makes a good album. you have to look at the greater population. Get Rich Or Die Trying: 12 million, enough said.

October 3, 2007 at 10:33 pm
(27) Chedda says:

Fiddy may be stating facts. but tyhose facts are based on the rest of the industry. His first album was the one that broke the mold, with second, third and fourth week sales that stand alone against most other albums total sales. To second guess a man who reworte the book on possibility in Hip-hop is left to no one. The album speaks for itself and in my opinion Fiddy put Kanye out with his style and greater beats while Kanye was stuck talking about how great other rappers are.

October 8, 2007 at 9:27 am
(28) Shiban says:

OMG.. i thought we already gave u stupid fifty lovers an example of MC Hammer and his top selling album… plz retards… JUST SHUT UP!!! plz, and get off 50’s d***, he suks… plz stop acting like you commercial people know about what hip hop means… by the way 50 only sells to wiggers, wankstas, nd people who love pop/R&B and the only rap they listen to is wanna be gangster rap, i’m assuming you guys are on of those people….. alright then

(29) masha 9mm. says:

50 is the king.Curtis was a let down there are no songs a hiphop fan would like in that album.BUT y’all should admit that get rich or die tryn was a classic.people around me are still listenin to it 4 years after being released.it is far much better than other ‘classics’such as blueprint

October 12, 2007 at 9:42 am
(30) longshanks says:

Whether or not you like 50 he had to go out and pay top producers top dollar to produce his album because he doesn’t have the talent like Kanye. www.dallas-autoglass.com Anyway its about who you like as opposed to who is better.

50 cent is and always was the king of hip hop. we all know lyrically he’s better than 2pac, biggie, and especialy that wack lyricist nas, and chamillionaire. 50 cent is a genious and no one can match up to he’s lyrics. he would destroy artists like eminem and ice cube, especially the worst rapper to this date… snoop dogg. the only good lyricists right now r 50 cent and souljah boy those guys make classic material. we dont need no stupid 2pac no more.
