Young Jeezy Questions Nas' Street Credibility

Friday December 8, 2006
I don't know if it has something to do with a desperate attempt to reel in record sales this shopping season, but flaming wars have been erupting everywhere in hip-hop lately. Young Jeezy is the latest to indict Nas on the title of his new album Hip-Hop Is Dead. While speaking to London-born rapper/radio personality Monie Love, Jeezy suddenly became agitated. The rapper not only questions Nas’ street credibility, but also insinuates that British-born people are not as knowledgeable about hip-hop as Americans. Since when did street cred become a priority in rap? Interestingly, Nas and Jeezy are labelmates over at Def Jam.

Listen to Young Jeezy's interview and let us know what you think.

Since when did street credibility have anything to do with the flow of an artist? Young Jeezy needs to chill out.

(2) M Dot says:

I listened to the interview and was completely amazed. Not only by the fact that Jeezy was extremely ignorant in his argument, but that he disrespected Monie Love. It sounded as though he didn’t respect her nor Nas for the work they have done. It sounded as though he had absolutely no knowledge of the roots of hiphop. He is part of the reason why hip hop is dead. Prioritizing supposed street cred over lyricism. Believing your own hype. Having zero knowledge of hip hop’s past is why hype is dead. Thanks Jeezy for helping kill hip hop!

(3) mark says:

This dude is the worst rapper in the south.Jezzy is not a artist. He is a drug dealer who thinks he can rap because he has been shot a couple times.Jeezy, grow up kidd. And when u challenge Jay-z or Nas to battle you,and u actually win,you have my respect. For one,you over england talking sh-t.And i hope they confront you about it.Make somg good music instead of always talking bout pushing drugs from city to city.It was cool on ya first couple songs, but kidd u in ya 3rd album.Dont you have something else to say??you suck jeezy.

(7) Tom says:

Young Jeezy.. does it matter what ’street cred’ you susposedly have? It doesn’t make you able to create a masterpiece, no matter where your from. 50 Cent is susposedly loved all around New York, but lets be fair; The Massacre was wack. Rap should be about the lyrics, flow, rhymes etc. But now if you base a good rapper on his street cred, then that’s just why Hip-Hop is dying off. And that “you’re from London you don’t know real hip-hop” line, is just another heap of bs. Over and out.

December 8, 2006 at 5:06 pm
(8) Santana says:

Young Cheezy (like DMX said)….I cant believe he would go and try to insult one of hip-hop’s last few icons…and im tired of him talking about Street Cred..because i dont believe he has none other then in his mind…(Black Mafia hasnt existed in years)…He needs to be worried about paying child support and keeping his baby mom’s str8….HAAA HAAAA

December 8, 2006 at 5:17 pm
(9) Pribs says:

Jeezy doesnt have the industry cred to even come close to touching Nas. He needs to shut his mouth. Nas is on of the greats he can call out any1 he wants. Jeezy has 1 mediocre album he has no where near the cred to come at Nas.

December 8, 2006 at 6:06 pm
(10) JP says:

Here the difference Nas one of the best rappers of all time jeezy is one of the worst of all time. Jeezys gonna hurt his own record sales not help it.

December 9, 2006 at 3:25 pm
(16) Marie says:

As long as crappy artists like Lil Wayne, Lil Jon, & Mike Jones are on the scene, Hip Hop will take a while to make a recovery. “Songs” such as Chicken Noodle Soup, Walk it Out, & Shoulder Lean are pure garbage.

Hip Hop lacks quality, substinence, genuine lyrics. We need to get away from Babes, Bling, & Booze.

December 9, 2006 at 3:51 pm
(17) Takia says:

Here’s a funny scenario. You turn on the tv & desire to be entertained with a little Hip Hop. You know….something to make you wanna bounce or set the mood. You turn to BET and you see booty. You flip to MTV and you see even more booty, but this time, the lame chick is standing in front of a Benz. In the midst of all the raunchiness, you might catch a glimpse of the “MC’s” grill. What are my choices? Am I going to learn how to “Walk it Out”, make “Chicken Noodle Soup” or “Peanut Butter & Jelly” sandwiches? Hmmm, very mentally stimulating, huh? But hey, that’s hip hop, right? So sad…….

Today’s so-called artists are good at marketing b.s. materialism and a** shaking. KRS One once said, “If you’re a rapper, sell lyrics, if you’re a ho, sell sex.” It seems these rappers have it all wrong, they are the hoes.

The music is no longer about creativity, expression and fun. It’s about acting like you’re pissed off all the time and being FAKE. The break dancers and graffiti artists at least have retained some of the original spirit… of course there’s not much money in that, so that might be why.

It’s all a commerialized package these days where one rapper gets a deal with a quick catchy song. Soon thereafter, he’s created his own record label, brings his homeys on the label, and multiplies the garbage. That’s a quick recipe for disaster, but it sells right? All you need is a hard beat and a recycled nursery rhyme (Eeny Meeny Miny Mo….how many b****** in the club wanna go? I knoooow you see it).

In the midst of all the garbage, there’s some light at the end of the rainbow. You still have good quality artists out there like Busta Rhymes, LL Cool J, Jay-Z, The Game, T.I., Missy Elliott, Da Brat, Common, Twista, Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, Mos Def, etc. It’s all up to us whether this garbage on the radio will survive ladies & gentlemen. Support real hip hop and let’s make booty-shakin’, grill showin’, candy paint crap a thing of the past. If you don’t the ghost of Mike Jones will haunt your kids. I said, if you don’t the ghost of Mike Jones will haunt your kids (lol).

December 9, 2006 at 4:56 pm
(18) Henry says:

^^Wow, lol at the Mike Jones comment. Seriously, you hit the nail on the head. The consumers are also responsible for the success of garbage rappers. As long as music buyers support garbage, label execs will keep pushing it.

December 9, 2006 at 4:57 pm
(19) Henry says:

Oh yea, despite Jeezy’s ignorant comments his album will still sell out the stores in a couple of weeks. After all, he said it himself that it’s all about the numbers.

December 9, 2006 at 8:07 pm
(20) Wisdom says:

I don’t think Jeezy really wants to see Nas but Jeezy does have a good point. Hip Hop is in a new era and the South is running it right now. Yes a lot of these new rappers are whack such as Mike Jones and Lil Flip and many others. What Nas know as Hip Hop may be dead. The problem is that the East Coast is mad that their not running the Hip Hop world right now. It’s a fact look at the numbers. As long as the south is producing artist like Ludacris, T.I., Outkast, Scarface, Lil Wayne, David Banner, and Bun B Hip Hop will never die.

December 9, 2006 at 8:38 pm
(21) milkman says:

Hey Wisdom,
I dont think the east coast is mad because they are not on top right now.
I think they are upset because what the south is doing is being called Hip Hop.
Its like Reggae.
If you say play a Reggae tune what tune will you play? Hip Hop has morphed into other things. We should have a new name for Southern style(Dance hall, rockers roots.. all reggae)Hip Hop .

(22) BK says:

NaS is from Queensbridge, thats his street cred . He grows from his music and nevers comes at you with the samething. When he was young he was talking about struggeling and now he yalks about everything from politics to his marriage to Kelis and how some of black america’s stars have turned their back on their community (Cuba Gooding Jr.) so dont come at NaS.

December 9, 2006 at 10:22 pm
(23) Luke says:

like honestly i can see street cred meaning something but not a lot, i mean 50 cent hes got cred. shot 9 times and living i mean thats just amazing. but seriously jeezy has cred for dealing coke (is that all?), dont get me wrong i like him and all but seriously if somebody came at me and is like, im a drug dealer ill b like haha and just laugh, cuz serioisuly its not intimidating. plus naas has all the lyrics and flow and jeezy should at least be one 1/10 of the level of nas before he comes at him, cuz nas should just come back at him and tear him up, although that wont prove anything

one last thing…why does everybody have to have rivals and stuff, sure i understand not liking ppl and being pissed at them but they should come together through the music and together try to save hip hop. with a little bit of work hip hop could come back stronger than ever with the likes of nas, snoop, game, jay z, lupe, eminem, dre…the potentials there, they just need to get together and make it happen instead of blaming each other

i know i rambled a little bit (a lot) and spelliing probably sucked but write back

December 10, 2006 at 1:23 am
(24) Takia says:

No, the east ain’t mad cause the South is running it. Outkast, Ludacris, & T.I. represent the small pool of talented southern rappers. I’m sorry but D4L and Mike Jones are a joke. Young kids keep supporting crap & execs feed into whatever’s selling. You can’t tell me that most of southern rap, crunk, hip hop….whatever ain’t garbage.

December 10, 2006 at 1:24 am
(25) Marie says:

By the way, Lil’ Wayne’s music is garbage also.

(26) sylk says:

I wouldnt call jezzy ignorant based off of this interview. I would say that monie love for one was getting a little to loud with a grown ass man. Im not taking up for jeezy but if you spit what you live and see on a daily how is that not hip hop. It seems to me like a he knows a lil about nas that everyone doesnt know. Hiphop as we once knew it is dead.but damn how many people you know that call them selves a rapper?they puttin break dancing in the olympics. cats rockin graffiti on they tennis shoes. Man now that I look at it hiphop aint dead niggas just scared.”hiphop is dead” is a good marketing statment also..”hint”lol

December 11, 2006 at 12:00 am
(27) Henry says:

^Jeezy is ignorant for insinuating that the British audience is dumb. He also disrespected two people that helped pioneer the craft he claims to be practicing now.

Besides, Jeezy himself claims he’s not a rapper. Nas is, and he’s passionate about hip-hop. That’s the difference.

December 11, 2006 at 12:34 am
(28) Takia says:

Hip Hop is missing that creative edge. It’s sad when all you hear are songs about candy paint & grills.

December 11, 2006 at 12:58 pm
(29) Joey says:

It was Phonte who, this year, said that just because one has the skills to sell drugs doesn’t mean that he also has the skills to rap about it. That, to me, is a perfect response to Jeezy. His music is horrible; his rhymes are boring. If he’s a drug dealer first, rapper second–something his music and entire aesthetic would have you believe–he should just stick with his primary purpose and abandon the avocation.

Nas was right: hip-hop is dead if this guy is carrying the mantle for anything.

I don’t see why they’re arguing, they’re both proving the same point; hip hop isn’t dead, its just filled with incompetent morons.

(32) luck says:

first of all hip hop is not dead..i grew up listening to nas, rakim, daddy kane all of them you dont see any of them talking bout hip hop is dead most of them are still rappin and the only reason nas is even acknowledged is because he got over on hov who the torch was past on to and now they butt buddies..but to overall kill the whole hype..times have change..hip hop is not dead its still on people doing graffiti, breakdancin and all is going thru a resurection in a different way and form…jeezy just holding his head on that note..rather he bust his gun or not..or trap all day…at the end of the day hip hop is not dead..but jeezy couldnt say better..just check the album sales..!…

December 12, 2006 at 8:19 pm
(33) Seven says:

This is what it boils done to…Nas and Young Jeezy grew up in two totally different eras and are working with two totally different trains of thought. Well me, I am a southerner. However I grew up on Hip Hop( Tribe, Schooly D, Ice T, EPMD, Brand Nubian and the list goes on). I can respect what Jeezy is saying but I dont agree with him. He is looking at Hip Hop from a Dope Boy’s perspective. Unfortunately, that what a lot of southerners think about…they seem not to know anything but the Dope Game. Nas is right. Authenticity in Hip Hop is dead which in turn makes (real)Hip Hop dead. The industry along with its followers don’t welcome the idea of creativity. Gimmicks are quick and fast and thats the way the world operates nowadays.
For instance, if Hip Hop isn’t dead, why can’t I completely distinguish Young Jeezy from Young Joc from T.I. and etc?

December 12, 2006 at 10:26 pm
(34) Georgia Boi says:

Seven if you can’t tell the difference between Jeezy, Joc or T.I., KILL YOSELF! Neither one of those guys sounds anything alike. With a comment like that stop reppin the south because you are not from here! Like anything, including hip hop, it must grow and people don’t like that the fact that the south is makin better music than the north

December 13, 2006 at 2:37 am
(35) B.R says:

What alot of people fail to realize, just cuz you sold drugs, you are not automatically a g. this dude is a rapper now. whatever he claim he did in the past he has no right to call out a man with MORE MONEY, MORE RESPECT , and MORE HITS than him. he’s out of his league. there’s been a whole lot of steam commin from the north because the south runs the charts. hell, its not our fault we know how to party….isn’t that what hip hop is all about anyway? if you wanna expand your mind listen to some mozart and read the dictionary. there’s another war about to start if you guys dont see it. it always is like that when new york aint gettin proper shine time and throws a bitch fit. look how they hated on the west when they were hot. it’s that hatin’ ass NEW YORK attitude. perhaps Jeezy just wanted to fire the first shot, although he’s not the guy to go at Nas. only a boss can go at another boss…………………………….

December 13, 2006 at 11:49 am
(36) Down South Chick says:

They way I see it Hip Hop is a perception. Most people are getting mad at Jeezy for negative his opinion and praising their own negative opinion (who say you’ll are right). Jeezy is a great rapper in his time, in his area, where he is from. Just as Nas, Monie Love, ect. While Jeezy was rude and did not listen to Monie Loves view, I can understand his frustration. Hip Hop is just not “NEW YORK” anymore….so does that make it dead? NO! You have different genres of the craft now and if you were a true fan of the craft you would respect that fact….listen to what you enjoy and leave the rest alone!!! Besides is it really that serious

December 13, 2006 at 2:53 pm
(38) donel says:

Hip hop is alive and poppin. Like fat joe say “why everybody mad at the south for” I am a fan of nas and jeezy, and I will go grab both albulms. They are both different artist who got different shyt to say. Some folk going to feel nas more, some going to feel jeezy more, but at the end of da day all dat beefing and war shyt is ignorant and unneccessary. Let nasir do his thing let jeezy do his thing and lets all get paid. I feel everything old has to change, and everything new gets old, and eventually times repeats itself. Hip hop is in a new era but the music is still lyrical, educating, and inspiriring. So let da d-boyz get money listening to jeezy and let the nas fans bop they heads listening to the more lyricist vet, and give it up to both of them brothaz, shyt they should go on ahead and jump on a track together, and to end this hip hop is still on and going hard, 1 luv

why everyone hating on Jeezy? so what he can’t spit in the traditional way. does that make him wack? does that deny him the opportunity to make his point? I think Monie Love was too aggressive and not balanced in her role as an interviewer. perhaps this is the hot 97 way.

is hiphop dead? nah. everyone has the right to carry the mantle. no matter how they representing. and I wholly agree with what milkman said. splitter the genre like the Reggae people do. but will this satisfy people? nah. everyone’s a purist these days. eff the talking and be about your music, dance on it (be it D4L or Nas). there’s enuff cake for everyone.

(44) Kapp says:

Young Jeezy challenging Nas is like a fly challenging the fly swatter…that battle is over already

You see that these new “rappaz” have no skills, no lyrical concept, no personality to distinguish one from another…and when someone, ANYONE, has the guts to challenge them (word to Monie) they fly off the handle…they know they arent right, that’s why the react like that

December 17, 2006 at 2:02 am
(45) DominiricanHeavyweight says:

People….I’m tired of some of these rappers like Jeezy (Sleezy Cheezy) calling themselves “DRUG DEALERS”!

A Drug Dealer where I come from is considered somebody who pulls mucho weight (metric tons) not 1-2 kilos, but only and only 1000 kilos or more!

This guy and many like him are “Drug Peddlers” not dealers! A “Drug Dealer” never touches the drugs let alone stand on a street corner to peddle nickles and dimes only to get robbed or shot.

A Drug Dealer makes at the minimum $2,000,000 (Million DOLLARS) or more per month, not $1,000 per week…That’s not even considered loose change to a true dealer!

Also….A “Drug Dealer” will never leave such a lucrative multimillion dollar per month business to sell records and only get a tiny portion of record sales and if he/she were to do something stupid like that then you best believe body counts would surely rise!

But I agree with the masses: He’s on his 3rd Album and still spitting the same hoe, same glock clip, same drug strip. Man, rap about stocks, relationships, the war or something that will teach something.

He probably could’ve learned some’n from what she had to say. I know everybody is entitled to their own opinion, but he explained no true reason why hip hop is alive;he included that hip hop is alive because he and some other rappers are eatin’.but thats besides the whole point. Just like Nas said.” I put the pistol in the capo mouth, till his scalp come out”. there’s goes your street cred Young Jeezy!!

I’m from atlanta and the music that is made here is not part of a marketing strategey. it is made for the club and a&r’s come down here and distribute it to yall. by the time you all are walkin out, bankhead bouncing, and atl stomping, we are not doing it anymore. all i have to say is that since jay-z retired from the rap game new york hasn’t been the same. jay kept new york rap alive….and once he left nobody was as dedicated as he was. in a way jay’s retirement made way for the south to take over…because the south is running it right now….i aint hating but it’s true what most people in here are saying alot these new southern “rappers” are producing low quality music. i love hip hop, wether is coming from the west coast, east coast, or south, as long as is real hip hop. i like young jeezy, hes cool and everything but to dis on nas come on now…they are 2 different kinds of artist. nas is hip hop period… case closed. jeezy is club music. you cant really compare the two, one thing’s for sure that southern music is not hip hop!!except for a few artists(luda, ti, outkast.)

Young Jeezy Had every right to get mad. Nas Said that hiphop was dead, Hiphop isn’t dead apart of hiphop is dead. The oldschool hiphop is gone, but Nas also has to understand that The game changes constantly and is going to keep on changing. Hiphop was actually formed in America (USA) So UK civilians i could say don’t have the knowledge as we do (USA civilians). Since When Street Cred. Becamed a big deal with hiphop? Plane and simple if you ain’t real id say you ain’t hiphop. Nas raps about fake stuffs sometimes, admit it.

First of all jeezy was outa line in his comments and the way he caried himself.jeezy is a hood star(street nigga) so what matters to him and his section is street cred. i dont think he should have been offended by nas saying hiphop is dead. nas can paint a lyrical picture that the average rap cat cant understand, he’s raw but is starting to simmer out. but dont get it twisted nas tried to add a lil southern flavor to his craft with no avail. jeezy is a right now rapper (and i luv it) nas is an icon. but who am i to say i listen to what i like from (the bridge is over) to (big pimpin spendin da cheese) one!

(75) Oil1010 says:

I wanna know when Nas said that he was mad becuase the south was “running” hip hop. First of all does anyone know that Nas’ father is from the south. Look it up. Number two, does anyone know that he has a house in the south. Look it up. Number three, does anyone know that he got married in the south. Look it up. Nas is basically southern. To all the real southerners that think Nas is talking about the south when he said that hip hop is dead, ya’ll just too damn ignorant. I love the south. I really love Atlanta. The atmosphere is great, the food is great, the black women are beautiful and some of the music is great. But ya’ll really got an ego down there. I mean do ya’ll know what this is. I mean do you have any clue about what hip hop is. Do ya’ll knwo who Nas is. The man put out a debut album that people are still talking about today. No mixtapes, no underground albums. When he came out, he came out hard. Jeezy put out an alright album that the south might consider a classic, but as a whole hip hop community, no one really thinks about anyomre. And that’s what’s missing. That’s what the south no longer does as a whole. Ya’ll don’t make timeless music. Ya’ll just focused on the right now. Ya’ll could care less about New York or what they have done for the game. With the exception of Outkast, there is no one in the south that has made a real impact on hip hop as far as on a national scale. UGK nad Ludacris have done a lot for the south. But they haven’t done any for anyone else for us to remember.

(76) the_fire says:

Wait, Jeezy is going after Nas on his credibility…okay, let’s look at the match-up:

Nas:
Been setting it on fire since 1991 on Main Source’s “live at the bbq”; at age 19 released “Illmatic” considered by many as THE BIBLE of hip-hop and one of the top 3 (if not top ALL-TIME) hip-hop album ever. Followed that up with “It Was Written”; and is a top-3 lyrical genius of all-time.

Jeezy:
Um…, well, he did, um…oh, man…A LITTLE HELP HERE!!!

The Defense Rests

If Jeezy can’t boost his record sales off talent, production, and promotions, then get outta the game, son, and let the icons be.

i feel jeezy on the strength of nas saying hip hop is dead because it will never die… as long as people are rapping then hiphop isnt dead you feel me? of course jeezy is nowhere clost to as good as a lyricist as nas but no matter how good you are you cant pronounce the death of hiphop. nas’ hype is dieing its been dieing. i think i heard him bombing on az and thats just retarded. i like nas’ old stuff and untouchable exclusive’s (unreleased songs but jeezy has the younger fanbase and will soon have more fans than nas does. but in all honesty nas in his prime rules over jeezy in his anyday.I just respect jeezy on his comments and everyone else should. hiphop is far from dead people. when the last freestyle or lyric is written…thats when hiphop will be dead. and that wont be till the end of mankind itself. thanks and good day. damn im good

jeezy is about something most wouldnt understand. a real life on the streets. his point was that nas is a corporate artist that hasnt lived the life that inspired the lifestyle music. jeezy didnt come off bad… I think the woman who was obviously trying to provoke him and get a good soundclip did. jeezy raps about the streets, about dealing, about things that arent a reality to most. that woman is disrespecting him by agreeing that she thinks hip hop is dead. he was right to take offense.

but on the bright side…. shell get alot of interest from the fact that she provoked jeezy into popping off about nas. which is what hip hop needs. -sarcasm-

May 14, 2008 at 12:42 pm
(93) ATL says:

He may have been ignorant, but he is not a bad artist… and who is to say hip-hop is dead??? just beacuse we do things diffrentlu dosnt mean its bad… yeah i heard all the comments made about the south is killing hip hop…and if you feel that way bout it than fuse them together…we all know that the south has the best beats and the best rappers are from up top(generally) so put them together and see what you get!!!

(94) D.M.T Bello says:

Its amazing jeezy saying all that nonsense. Nas is legendary, one of the few remaining icons. Whereas, Jeezy is just a silly overblown meatloaf who does nothing other than tell us he’s a drug dealer and he’s been shot a few times. Does that give him the nerve to talk shop about Nas. Jeezy might sell more albums but, compared to Nas, he remains an upcoming artiste.

(98) Russell says:

The whole “street credibility” with rappers now n days are Rapping about things they actually did in their past in such. Thats why u encounter two rappers going toe to toe – back n forth on you tube questioning people from that other rappers neighborhood and such to see if the hood has actually seen this guy out there on those corners like he says he use to – They just wanna be seen as the “Realest” rapper. It’s definitely childish but it’s also entertaining. Don’t be too shocked when u hear a rapper talkin about “Yeah! Don’t talk about big mac’s and mcFlurries if ya neva work at McDonalds partna!” lol its crazy. It’s entertainment and they do it for to lock in and focus on them…For example How successful would 50 cent be if there wasn’t any beef amongst rappers? How longer would have Biggie and Tupac lived?
