With so many rap tunes raining down on us like confetti, it's often challenging to wrap our hands around the hottest songs out there. Not to worry, I've compiled a list of the ten songs that are incinerating charts and ears everywhere. The weekly Top 10 is based mainly on aesthetic value, relevance, and performance on various charts.
1. Rhymefest - Dynomite (Going Postal)
Rhymefest recently dropped his Plugg City mixtape to hold fans over until his Blue Collar album debut in June, 2006. The mixtape features several hip-hop underdogs from Chicago, and is available on mixunit.com.
2. T.I. - What You Know
Tip may no longer hold the #1 spot on Billboard Hot 200, but "What You Know" is still blazing up charts, radio stations, and even cell phones.
3. Gnarles Barkley - Crazy
This is one song that has enjoyed genre-bending airplay and support everywhere, ranging from hip-hop to r&b and pop stations.
4. Mobb Deep - Put 'Em In Their Place
Mobb Deep's official lead single from Blood Money is the hot shot debut of the week. The album's release date has been extended to May, 2006.
5. Bubba Sparxxx featuring Petey Pablo & Sleepy Brown - The OtherSide
Bubba Sparxxx's third album, The Charm, recently entered the Billboard Albums chart at the #9 position. Bubba's controversial single, "Ms New Booty," is still one of the most popular ringtones in the country.
6. Obie Trice featuring Akon - Snitch
The Shady camp and Detroit hip-hop as a whole have been plagued by a series of violent events. Obie Trice survived a bullet on new year's eve, and more recently, Proof of D-12 was murdered at a night club in Detroit.
7. Yung Joc - It's Goin' Down
Meet Yung Joc, the newest addition to P.Diddy's Bad Boy South imprint. "It's Goin' Down" is the first single from New Joc City, which drops on May 23rd.
8. Ice Cube - Why We Thugs
More than 10 years after gangsta rap chiefs took social commentary to another level, Ice Cube still finds a slightly different way to spread the same message. Ice Cube is on tour this spring to promote his upcoming album, Laugh Now, Cry Later.
9. Chamillionaire featuring Krayzie Bone - Ridin'
Ridin' has gone from a regional banger to a national anthem. This trunk-rattling song is best played with the bass on max.
10. Ghostface featuring Ne-Yo - Back Like That
Our artist of the month, Ghostface Killah, has plans to keep his name bubbling alive throughout the year. A collaboration project entitled Swift and Changeables with masked marvel, MF Doom, is scheduled for a fall release.
