The Bottom Line
"I Gotcha" is Lupe Fiasco's desperately-needed commercial single to re-generate some buzz and interest for his forthcoming debut, Food & Liquor. The high orders over at Atlantic probably insisted that Lupe enlist a super-producer to not only provide a solid beat but much-needed flair to the song.
Pros
- Shocases Lupe's intricate and clever wordplay
Cons
- Adhere's strictly to the beat's structure
Description
- "I Gotcha" was produced by the ubiquitous Neptunes crew.
- The second single from Lupe's Food & Liquor.
- A brilliant stratagem for radio play and mainstream acceptance.
Guide Review - Lupe Fiasco - I Gotcha
Lupe Fiasco suppresses this Neptunes beat just long enough for it to be entertaining and exciting. While Fiasco conquers the beat, he does succumb to its frantic rhythm forcing him to employ more syllables and consonants than necessary. This tropical-sounding, terse beat boasts a beautiful piano arrangement that accentuates Lupe's vocals. Lupe does his best to not only stay at pace with the beat, but plants his footprints all over, convincingly commandeering the track in his direction.
Fiasco matches the rebellious production with witty, didactic lines that dare to sedate the beat, "We used to gang bang, but a lot of that done died down". It cannot be over-exaggerated or, for that matter, duly said how Fiasco saddles "I Gotcha" with effortless lines such as "my secret's safe // it's in my secret safe // that's in my secret room // on my secret base and we came to resurrect you-oooh". This song will effectively serve as a commercial single while still preserving its honest appeal. While, the song was risqué in terms of the production, it definitely pays dividends. "I Gotcha" has the vitality to last past its radio run and onto listeners' soul.
