Guide Review - Lupe Fiasco ft. Jill Scott - Daydreamin' (1st & 15th / Atlantic)
At some point in their career, most hip-hop artists would start running about with the "I'm not a rapper" label. Like everything rap-related, it was cool until after Jay-Z said it on The Blueprint. It's now more of cliche than a factual statement. In 2006, Lupe Fiasco is the only wordsmith with enough credibility to exclude himself from the 'non-rapper' umbrella. He's more like an artist with the world as his canvas. His Picasso-esque paintings spring to life on this Jill Scott-assisted "Daydream."
After ka-kun-ka-kun-ing us on "Kick, Push," the Windy City wonderboy recruits Philly soulstress Jill Scott for a sumptous, poetry-inspired groove. Like Lupe's show-stealing cameo on "Touch the Sky," "Daydreamin'" is metaphor-heavy, even if the delivery is not as ferocious. It's not supposed to be. The song is a refreshing glass of water on a hot Saturday afternoon. Harmonious blend of Jill Scott's soothing crooning with free-form artistry, courtesy of hip-hop's mightiest rookie.
