Guide Review - Ludacris - Money Maker (DTP / Def Jam)
Luda's latest offering, Money Maker, whether through witty irony or sheer coincidence, is an eponymous description. Confused? The title describes the song accurately-it's a money-maker intent on racking as many spins as possible at the expense of our heavily laden, radio-conditioned ears. Dont be surprised if "Money Maker" grows on you, as it undoubtedly will. The beat (a bass-ridden base line and weirdly concocted hollow sounds) comes courtesy of The Neptunes. While Pharrel serenades the beat with his trademark falsetto, Ludacris comes off as uninspired. He seems complacent with his purposefully poor technique and even gloats with his fluctuating tenors.
"Money Maker" was obviously intended as a summer smash, as it more than satisfies the requirements: lame yet memorable pick-up lines (Im a bedroom gangsta), disorganized, rambunctious production, and an accompanying big-budget video. Overall, it's a major setback in Ludacris campaign to claim the southern rap throne.
