The Bottom Line

He just couldn’t help it. “Back like Jordan, wearing the #45”, President S. Carter simply “can’t leave rap alone”…and “the game needs” him. “It’s ya boy!”

Pros

  • The so-called “King of New York” is back, flowing as fluid as ever
  • Obsessive Jigga fans have a renewed reason to live

Cons

  • A great song, but not necessarily “single material.”

Description

  • "Kingdom Come" is the title track from Jay-Z's comeback album
  • The song was produced by long-time affiliate Just Blaze
  • It samples Rick James’ “Super Freak”

Guide Review - Jay-Z - Kingdom Come Song Review

You know what happens when Just Blaze is “bored”? He quickly crafts a brilliant Rick James’-sampled beat and puts it up on Myspace for the world to hear. And what happens when the President of hip-hop, campaigning for a rap resurrection, wants to spit over the beat to kick-start his return to the rap game? You hand it over, no questions asked.

On “Kingdom Come”, a title which is taken from the DC Comics graphic novel of the same name, Hov plays the role of superhero: “I take off the blazer, loosen up the tie/ Step inside the booth, Superman is aliiive….Flash Gordon when recording, spark a light in the dark/ Peter Park--Spiderman, all I do is climb the charts.” Unlike "Show Me What You Got," "Kingdom Come" finds Jay patting himself on the back and ditching eccentricities.

Returning from his three-year hiatus and “worst retirement in history”, the ever-missed flow of the “Mike Jordan of recording” is a breath of fresh air. Just imagine what else Hov’s got in store for us on November 21st.
