Top 10 Rap Albums - September 2013

By

With 40 percent of the year's most wanted rap albums now on shelves, you'd expect the home stretch to be a snoozefest, right? In that case, think of this month's lineup as the list equivalent of a Mutombo finger wag. September brings forth new rap albums from heavyweights Drake and 2 Chainz, as well as that long-awaited Deltron 3030 album. Dig in for this month's best new rap albums.

10. Tanya Morgan - 'Rubber Souls'

Criminally underrated Brooklynati outfit Tanya Morgan is back with a new set, after a four-year hiatus. And things have changed: Ilyas is gone, leaving Von Pea and DonWill to hold down Album #3, Rubber Souls (word to The Beatles). Expect an album that will "satisfy long time fans and shock non-believers," vows DonWill.
Guests: Spec Boogie, 6th Sense, Outasight, Nitty Scott, Rocki Evans
Release Date: September 24, 2013

9. Nelly - 'M.O.'

Nelly fans have had to wait three years for a new album. This fall, the St. Louis entertainer returns with M.O., which will arrive via Republic Records. Judging by the response to his Nicki Minaj-assisted summer jam, "Get Like Me," (2 million views on YouTube!) there's definitely some excitement in the air. For M.O., Nelly teamed up with production powerhouses like Pharrell and Rico Love. He told Hip Hop Wired that Skateboard P produced about 4 or 5 songs on the album.
Guests: Future, Nelly Furtado, Trey Songz, T.I., Kelly Rowland, 2 Chainz, Nicki Minaj
Release Date: September 30, 2013

8. Wordsmith - 'The Blue Collar Recital'

Quiet as kept, Wordsmith's 2012 album King Noah was one of the few potent albums not released on a major label. Word is back singing blue collar blues on his latest, The Blue Collar Recital, an 11-song concept album worthy of multiple spins. As the lead single signifies, the album tracks the journey of a man who's "Living Life Check to Check."
Guests: Sean Toure, Notoriety, Cherri, Paul Rivers Bailey
Release Date: September 17, 2013

7. Meek Mill - 'Dreamchasers 3'

The wait is over. After several pushbacks, freestyles and teaser tracks, Meek Mill is finally ready to release Dreamchasers 3. And it will arrive just three days after the MMG compilation album, Self-Made Vol 3. Need something to get excited about? The intro has Meek "going at everybody's head."
Release Date: September 20, 2013

6. Lil Wayne - 'Dedication 5'

Lil Wayne promised to "work harder" for his fans. The 29-track Dedication 5 is a start. The formula is unchanged: Wayne trying on popular tracks for size, while DJ Drama jumps in to yell over the tracks. Dedication 5 finds the Young Money rapper rhyming over Kanye West's "New Slaves," 2 Chainz's "Feds Watching," A$AP Rocky's "F*cking Problems," and more.
Guests: The Weeknd, Chance the Rapper, T.I., 2 Chainz, Vado
Release Date: September 1, 2013

5. Maybach Music Group - 'Self-Made 3'

Rick Ross rounds up the homies for a third go at the successful Self-Made series. Vol. 3 sports a familiar list of co-conspirators, including new boy Rockie Fresh.

Release Date: September 17, 2013

4. Run the Jewels (El-P + Killer Mike) - 'Run the Jewels'

When El-P and Killer Mike combined to release AOTY candidate, Run the Jewels, they didn't charge a penny for it. Thanks to the physical release, via Fool's Gold Records, you can now buy a copy and continue to terrorize your neighbors with Mike and El's grimy soundtrack.
Guests: Prince Paul, Big Boi
Release Date: September 17, 2013

3. Deltron 3030 - 'Event II'

After battling mean oligarchs on Part I (released in 2000), Del the Funky Homosapien, Kid Koala, and Dan the Automator return to take on a more dystopian universe. "This time, the album has a specific story," says Del in a press release. "The Deltron world has gone too far with technology. Everything's destroyed, and you just see the remnants of our technology. The streets are run by criminals, the police are outnumbered and outgunned, and we're like pirates, running rogue, doing what we do to survive. That's the scene of it. We're trying to be as literary as possible while dealing with a musical format." I'll give you a moment to peruse the guest list; it's a weird one.
Guests: Black Rob, The Lonely Island, Zach De La Rocha, Damon Albarn, Casual, Mike Patton, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jamie Cullum, David Chang, Mary Elizabeth Winstead
Release Date: September 30, 2013

2. 2 Chainz - 'Based on a True Story II: Me Time'

When GQ asked 2 Chainz about Based on a True Story II: Me Time, the 6'5" rapper politely replied: "Everyone's sold dope, f*cked b*tches, popped champagne, shot guns. I'll take the extra minutes to do it a new way." A new way for the artist formerly known as Tity Boi means leading off his project with single about federal surveillance, titled "Feds Watching." He's different.
Guests: Pharrell, Fergie, Drake, Lil Wayne, Juicy J, Rich Homie Quan
Release Date: September 10, 2013
