Top 10 New Rap Albums - October 2010


October is my favorite month, and not just because it's my birth month. Between the cool weather and the arrival of the new NBA 2K game, I'm usually a happy camper. Oh, and for whatever reason fall always brings some compelling music, which makes compiling my birthday playlist a delight. Here are 10 albums worth checking out this month.

10. Atmosphere - 'To All My Friends / Blood'

Slug and Ant return with another double EP in the vein of Lucy Ford. As you'll find out on first listen, To All My Friends/Blood Make The Blade Holy was originally planned as a promo item for the duo's tour. So, don't confuse this with the new Atmosphere album. That's scheduled for 2011.

9. Foreign Exchange - 'Authenticity'

Though Phonte and Nicolay quietly earned a Grammy for 2008's "Leave It All Behind," the duo is still searching for that authentic sound that perfectly encapsulates their essence. "I think every band reaches that point when they come into their own and find a sound that is distinctively theirs," says Phonte in reference to the album's title. "The title refers to me and Nic's journey to find our own unique space within this vast musical landscape.

8. Masta Killa - 'Loyalty Is Royalty'

WU lyricist Masta Killah shows promise on his third go-round, Loyalty Is Royalty. The album is produced primarily by PF Cuttin. In case you're wondering what the tandem of Killah and Cuttin sounds like, consult "It Is What It Is."

7. Statik & Termanology - '1982'

As you can probably deduce from the title, Statik Selektah and Termanology were both born in 1982. The two teamed up on this album to honor the music that colored their childhood. Guests who weren't born in '82 include Freeway, M.O.P., Saigon, Reks, and Inspectah Deck.

6. Canibus - 'C of Tranquility'

Canibus returns with The C of Tranqulity, featuring collaborations with DJ Premier, M.O.P., The Are, and others. Bis approached this album like a rookie with plenty to prove. He really put some thought into every aspect of the music, from album title and artwork to concept and sequencing.

5. Nottz - 'You Need This Music'

Nottz joins the growing list of producers who have picked up the microphone recently. Nottz is surprisingly comfortable on the mic. And when he needs a breather, a host of seasons emcees are on hand to assist. Features: Royce da 5'9", Kardinal Offishall, Little Brother, Joel Ortiz, and Snoop Dogg.

4. Lil Wayne - 'I Am not A Human Being'

At the rate Lil Wayne has been releasing new music you'd think he was sitting in his Young Money office calling all the shots. Instead, Weezy's friends have made sure that fans stay saturated with his sound. His latest, the amazingly titled street album I Am Not a Human Being, is set to drop on Weezy's birthday, September 27. Physical copies will be available on October 12.

3. Joe Budden - 'Mood Muzik 4: A Turn for the Worst'

The Internet's favorite emcee is finally ready to drop the fourth part of his Mood Muzik series. The mixtape is still scheduled for Oct. 26. The sample-free retail version arrives Nov. 9.

2. Pimp C - 'Naked Soul Of Sweet Jones'

Pimp C died in December 2007 while putting finishing touches on his third solo album, The Naked Soul of Sweet James. This album is a tribute to his genius, with guest rhymes from Bun B, Drake, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Young Jeezy, Lil Boosie, Webbie, Devin the Dude and more.

1. Shad - 'TSOL'

TSOL has been out for nearly a year now, but Canadian rhyme slinger Shad will introduce it to U.S. audiences later this month. How good is TSOL? Well, it's on a shortlist of albums I'm considering adding to 2010's best rap albums.
