Top 10 New Rap Albums for August 2013

By

Below, the best new rap albums of the month. A cornucopia of auditory goodness for every hip-hop taste bud, including sweet, syrupy, and downright dirty. Peep game.

10. Blame One and J57 - 'Walk in the Sun'

As we mourn the death of record stores, this collaboration is an apt reminder of a time when hip-hop humans bonded over common interests, you know, like beats and rhymes. Not to get all misty-eyed OG on you. Alls I'm saying is nostalgia isn't always such a bad word.
Guests: Soul Khan, Exile, DJ Rhettmatic
Release Date: August 27, 2013

9. Terrace Martin - '3chordfold'

Terrace Martin walks in the shadow of DJ Quik and, occasionally, Dr. Dre. By that I mean his headphone is embossed with a musical sense you can't buy at Guitar Center. He can hold his own on the M-I-C, too. Said musical sense directs Martin's work on album #3, 3chordfold, which bows to all that came before.
Guests: Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Wiz Khalifa
Release Date: August 13, 2013

8. Madchild - 'Lawn Mower Man'

You know that saying about how whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger? Do you think whoever it was that said that was all for drugs destroying lives? Doubt it. But adversity certainly has a way of enlarging you. See: Madchild, who recovered from drug addiction and launched a solo career last year. The Swollen Members member keeps his solo run alive with Lawn Mower Man. You can stream the entire thing here.
Guests: Prevail (Swollen Members), Bishop Lamont, Slaine, JD Era
Release Date: August 6, 2013

7. Canibus Presents: Almighty - 'The 2nd Coming'

The Almighty talent hierarchy in an ascending order: M-80 < JP Beats < Nino Graye < Bronze Nazareth < Planet Asia < Cappadonna < Canibus.
Guests: Masta Killa, Vinnie Paz, Busta Rhymes, Crooked I
Release Date: August 27, 2013

6. Stevie Stone - '2 Birds 1 Stone'

Anyone who has the audacity to christen himself Stevie Stone better be dragging two stones with his member. Stevie is only hauling one stone, it seems. But a little bird told me that this St. Louis rapper intends to kill two of its kind with one stone. Just stay out of his way, mmmkay?
Guests: Tech N9ne, Krizz Kaliko, Brotha Lynch Hung,
Release Date: August 13, 2013

5. No Malice - 'Hear Ye Him'

Pusha T's brother rechristened himself No Malice (he used to go by Malice) to reflect his new outlook on life. I don't think he'll die for your sins, but he does express quite a bit of concern on what he calls his "best work ever."
Guests: Ab Liva, Fam-Lay, Pusha T,
Release Date: August 18, 2013

4. Big Sean - 'Hall of Fame'

In which Sean Anderson attempts to shake his Kanye Lite label.
Guests: Nicki Minaj, Jhene Aiko, Juicy J
Release Date: August 27, 2013

3. Juicy J - 'Stay Trippy'

There is one true Three 6 Mafia experience, and that experience is gone. Long gone. In lieu of a legit Triple 6 project, there's always the ever entertaining Juicy J. If it's performance art you want, it's performance art you'll get. The guy has an Academy Award, remember? Stay Trippy, which has been in the works for over a year now, arrives via Taylor Gang Records.
Guests: Pimp C, A$AP Rocky, Wiz Khalifa, 2Chainz, Justin Timberlake
Release Date: August 27, 2013

2. Goodie Mob - 'Age Against the Machine'

After a decade-long sabbatical, Goodie Mob (Big Gipp, Khujo, T-Mo, Cee Lo Green) reunite and reintroduce their grits-flavored sound to a new generation of hip-hop heads via their fourth album, Age Against the Machine. I'm rooting for them to score a big single just to witness the inevitable "What's Goodie Mob?" Twitter chinwag from high schoolers who've never heard of Cee Lo's clique.
Guests: Janelle Monae, T.I.
Release Date: August 27, 2013

1. Earl Sweatshirt - 'Doris'

Earl Sweatshirt - Doris
© Sony
"Im just trying to make pretty music. Everyone whose favorite song off Earl was "Epar" or whatever might be pretty bummed. Everyone with 666 or KTA or some sort of stupid hashtag like ‘hey look im crazy’ in their bio might be pretty bummed too. I anticipate a loss of fans. I also anticipate gaining some… I f*cking love how it sounds. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that you can hear the progression. I hope I lose you as a fan if you only f*ck with me because I rapped about raping girls when I was 15." - Earl Sweatshirt on Doris.
Features: Pharell, RZA, Tyler, The Creator, Frank Ocean, Domo Genesis, Vince Staples, Casey Veggies, Mac Miller
Release Date: August 20, 2013
