Top 10 Rap Albums - August 2012

A cornucopia of auditory goodness for every hip-hop taste bud, including sweet, syrupy, and downright dirty. Peep game.

10. Madchild - 'Dope Sick'

Fresh off his battle with drug addiction, Madchild (of Swollen Members) comes clean on his first solo album. Phil The Agony, DJ Revolution, and Dilated Peoples stop by.

Release Date: August 28, 2012

9. Awar - 'The Laws of Nature'

Awar roams through the jungle ripping everything in his path, spittin' rawness all over Laws of Nature. If you've never heard of AWAR, now is a good time to start. If it helps, you should know that the inimitable Jake One produced Laws of Nature's buzz track, "Elephant Gun."

Release Date: August 14, 2012

8. Statik Selektah x Strong Arm Steady - 'Stereotype'

Statik Selektah has produced entire albums for Freddie Gibbs, Action Bronson, and tons more. Up next: a full-length collaboration with Strong Arm Steady (Mitchy Slick, Krondon and Phil Da Agony). Stereotype features Black Hippy, David Banner, and Casey Veggies.

Release Date: August 14, 2012

7. DJ Khaled - 'Kiss the Ring'

Rap's most boisterous cheerleader serves up another batch of chest-beating, heart-pumping, star-studded anthems. Khaled's last outing, 2011's We The Best Forever, scanned an okay 165,000 units. The lead single from that album, "I'm on One," is certified platinum at 1.5 million units, justifying claims that singles still trump albums. The guest list for this one reads like a who's who in hip-hop.

Guests: J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, Meek Mill, Nas, Scarface, etc

Release Date: August 21, 2012

6. Casual & J Rawls - 'Respect Game or Expect Flames'

J. Rawls mans the boards, while Casual handles the mike. They're pretty much like the mashed potatoes and gravy of this rap thing (other cliche combos were taken, sorry). Respect Game or Expect Flames boasts appearances by various members of the Hieroglyphics posse.

Release Date: August 28, 2012

5. Stu Bangas & Vanderslice - 'Diggaz With Attitude'

It's titled Diggaz With Attitude because, well, these guys love digging for samples. And there's plenty on Stu and Vanderslice's 17-track LP. There's also plenty of dirty drums and cinematic loops. And a strong lineup: The Alchemist, Roc Marciano, Evidence, Apathy, Ill Bill, Esoteric, Blaq Poet, Vinnie Paz, Celph Titled, and Smiley the Ghetto Child.

Release Date: August 28, 2012

4. Beanie Sigel - 'This Time'

Beanie Sigel has had a few rough years: jail, court cases, a nasty breakup with the Roc and some even nastier feud with his erstwhile mentor JAY-Z. And as if that's not bad enough, he's now serving a two-year prison bid for tax evasion and other things. But none of that has stopped The Broad Street Bully from doing what he loves most -- making music. The Roc-a-Fella alum has recorded a new batch of songs for his truest of true fans and, This Time, it will be issued via the revamped Ruffhouse Records.

Release Date: August 14, 2012

3. DJ Shadow - 'Total Breakdown'

© Reconstruction Production
The full title is quite a mouthful: Total Breakdown: Hidden Transmissions From the MPC Era. It features MPC experimentations from the pre-Endtroducing era. So what we have here is a peek inside the divine mind of a genius in his formative years. The collection tracks Shadow's work between the years of 1992 and 1996. Good stuff.

Release Date: August 21, 2012

2. 2 Chainz - 'Based on a T.R.U. Story'

2 Chainz (the rapper formerly known as Tity Boi) is 35 and is finally making his solo debut. That's quite a feat when you consider how ageist hip-hop can be. This one has been long in the works and it's destined for a Top 10 debut. All those years grinding on the mixtape circuit and dropping guest rhymes everywhere finally paid off for Two Necklaces.

Guests: Kanye West, Drake, Nicki Minaj, The-Dream, Lil Wayne

Release Date: August 14, 2012

1. Slaughterhouse - 'welcome to: Our House'

Their self-titled debut set the bar pretty high. Legend has it they recorded that bad boy in a mere six days. Imagine what Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, Royce da 5'9" and Crooked I are capable of now that they've had three years to think up new rhymes for welcome to: Our House, the group's Shady debut. Brooklyn, New Jersey, Detroit, and Long Beach STAND UP.

Guests: Eminem, Cee-Lo, Skylar Grey, Swizz Beatz, B.o.B.
