Russell Simmons Backs Kucinich, Calls Obama a "Mouse"

Tuesday May 8, 2007
Russell Simmons, Def Jam co-founder and long-time Democratic supporter, has thrown his weight behind Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich in the 2008 Presidential Election, according to the Cleveland Leader. In an interview with Adam Bernard, Simmons offered an explanation for his endorsement:

"I like Dennis Kucinich, how bout that? If you were black you’d have to like him and if you were interested in preserving mother earth you would like him, and if you were interested in fighting poverty you would like him. If you were interested in practicing a different relationship with not only mother earth but all of the species on it, as a vegan, like him, you’d like him. If you’re interested in lifting the planet up and having a higher consciousness you’d like him. No one else knows about him, but I’m just making a point."

Simmons, whose latest book Do You! 12 Laws to Access the Power in You to Achieve Happiness and Success recently landed on the New York Times' Bestsellers List, has long expressed his disinterest in both of the Democratic party front-runners. In an April interview with Deborah Solomon of the New York Times, he referred to Sen. Barack Obama as a "mouse" who is "controlled, just like everyone else."

In that same interview, Simmons disclosed that he's talked to Democratic candidate Sen. John Edwards "more than anyone." One explanation for the tension between Simmons and Obama is the latter's criticism of derogatory rap lyrics.

What do you make of Russell Simmons' endorsement? Is Dennis Kucinich the best candidate for the hip-hop community?

This is an excellent endorsement for a fantastic candidate.

Mr. Simmons - who himself is a seeker and realizes that candidates like Obama, are - at the end of the day - still “business as usual” and Sen. Obama’s use of the word ‘audacity’, in expressing comittment to change, is itself ‘audacious’.

Dennis Kucinich represents one last chance to utilize that currency of hope, that true desire to do things differently - but not recklessly.

I ask those who are wondering whom to vote for to please assess the candidates’ respective platforms, briefly investigate their claims, and read between the lines.

And most importantly - DO NOT let the major networks manipulate the electoral process by declaring “frontrunners”, fundraising totals, and specious polling data.

When the networks decide that we hear Duncan Hunter instead of Ron Paul, OR John Edwards and Hillary Clinton instead of Dennis Kucinich and Bill Richardson, we are having pur dialogue decided for us.

Why does it take close to $100 million and a 2 year election cycle tocome up with a president? Because that’s the nature of an advertising campaign and all that is at stake for those who support that campaign.

Many people recognize that Kucinich speaks truth, votes his conscience, has no strings on him, doesn’t derogate others, is a man of compassion intelligence and integrity, and is true to his oath to protect and defend the Constitution. To hear these same people say, “but, he doesn’t stand a chance”, makes me want to scream: “He Is, In Fact, Probably Our ONLY CHANCE!”

(7) Pam says:

We want a President that had the insight to realize what a disaster it would be to invade a country that has not attacked us, nor do they have the capability to attack us.

He not only opposed the war from the very beginning, and voted that way, but he did an in-depth analysis on the joint resolution to invade Iraq that he distributed to all the members of Congress eight days before the vote to go to war. The other candidates claim that if they had this info, which all turned out to be true, they would not have voted to go to war. Well, they did have this info, and it only took me a few minutes to read, so it’s real sad if they didn’t care enough to take a few minutes to read it.

I have just mentioned on local radio BBC GMR that Dennis Kucinich has begun impeachment proceedings against vice president Richard Cheney and that he was not taken in by the lies concerning wmds and knew that evidence from Scott Ritter a former weapons inspector was that Iraq did not possess wmds and that the people of Britain and Iraq were being mislead. He,Dennis Kucinich, seems to have good and wise judgement and that is what the world needs in these troubled times. I hope he wins.

(9) Kelly says:

Endorsing Kucinich shows knowledge and insight into the inner struggles of the Democratic party. Dennis is the only candidate that isn’t bought. He has a plan to address the major problems facing our nation and our world. Kucinich’s Presidency will be the end of the”War on Drugs” the “War on Terror”, we will have single payer universal healthcare, get out of Nafta, end dependence on fossil fuels, save our planet, equal rights for ALL. We the people need to stop buying the crap we are sold by the MSM, candidates that raise 25 million $ in 3 months, are obviously not on the side of the poor working class folks. Everyone send him a few bucks, campaigning is expensive. If 100,000 people send him $5 a week, it adds up to enough to continue. The working class should unite around this man of peace, wisdom and integrity.

(12) MAX WEITZ says:

Simmons has been buffaloed just like every other fool out there. Mr. K is the most ineffective member of Congress - all talk and no action! He has single handedly lost 1/3 of his District’s federal funding, he has completely neglected the needs of his consitutents - he shows up “after the fact” when a plant closes, screams about it, then leaves and does nothing. In fact, every job he says he’s saved - is gone! And during his reign of terror, Cleveland has gone from being one of the 10 most livable cities in the nation to the poorest city in the nation twice in the last 3 years.
I thought Russell Simmons was smart - boy was I stupid!

Dennis Kucinich is the best choice for hip hop, for mom and pop and for anyone else who believes there are more important things in life then buying more things. He’s the poeple’s candidate. Get out and spread the word

(14) Anne del Prado says:

Dennis Kucinich is one of those rare politicians, who does not force his beliefs on others. As SGSparks says, he is our only hope. If all those who have given up hope vote for him and tell others about him, we will end up with a great president. As the youngest mayor of a large city, he had the courage to stand up against the money and power hungry and refused to sell Clevelands municipal power plant. Thanks to that courageous young mayor, the residents of Cleveland were not affected when electricity prices skyrocketed.

(15) Paul Jacobs says:

Dennis is a man with integrity and honesty as his guiding principle, if America is not fed up with lies yet, there’s no hope at all.

It’s UNBELIEVABLE that after all bu#* and ch*!% have put us through, that any of the OTHER candidates have a chance. Haven’t we had enough yet? I sure as hell have.

(16) Tomi Phillips says:

From where I sit, no one else has stood for so long and so passionately to not get us involved in war in Iraq, and for getting us out now. He wants to assist Iraq in ruling their own country, and involving the United Nations in this role. He will make sure Americans have not for profit health care. He speaks for we, the people. Please give him a chance; tell every one you know about Kucinich, and encourage people to vote for the one who they can clearly see has integrity and the courage to stand for us!

what about this article:
Are there any presidential candidates who inspire you? I talk to John Edwards more than I talk to anyone. He has said more things about the conditions we need to think about. He went to yoga with me. He did the whole class, an hour and a half. He sweated like crazy. He’s in good shape, but it was hard on him.”

Ron Paul is for constitutional freedom for ALL people. Ron Paul is the peoples candidate! We want our habeus corpus back, NO Patriot Act, We want our people out of big business prisons all across the United States for nothing more than this idiot war against drugs. The so called war against drugs has cost Billions in taxpayers money and is a losing war against our american citizens. The only people winning here is the big federal government who are the only profiteers. We need to “Bring our military home” and stop policing and dictating to the world americans. Lets do this thing NOW! Ron Pauls message is one that is bringing americans United ….together.
