No, not that guy. This guy: SoulBrotha, or SB for short. He's a rising rapper out of Houston with a slew of mixtapes and freepies (that's a term I coined for free EPs just now) under his belt. His latest, The Southpaw EP, is a curious fusion of rap and indie-rock. It basically takes strands from Brit-rock, pop and R&B and wraps them around hip-hop narratives. Southpaw demonstrates with stirring electronics that rappers can sing and rap and clap and hey-hey and still sound compelling.
SB is at his blistering best when calling attention to issues dear to him: relationship woes, personal values, and his African heritage. Many of the songs are reinterpretations of The XX's self-titled debut, laced entirely by BroadNMarket of the Accomplices and NJ native Joe Andriulli. You're in for a thoroughly refreshing ride.
(Soulbrotha is on Twitter, where he routinely talks smack about football and occasionally kicks knowledge ((oh hey, did you know that The Throne's "That sh-t cray" was inspired by the Kray Twins?)) You can stalk him @SoulB)
