Who's the Best MC in Slaughterhouse?

By , About.com GuideAugust 12, 2009

Follow me on:

With the recent release of their self-titled debut album (more on that later) Slaughterhouse has now joined the ranks of hip-hop groups with no real weak links. Joell, Royce, Joey, and Crooked are all capable of holding down an entire album indivdually. Collectively, they’re deadly. So, rather than debate the weakest link, I think it's more interesting to compare their strengths. So, tell me, who is Slaughterhouse's best MC?

i vote for joe budden..but each member has his own personality wich makes them unique as a person.

(2) Mr XX says:

Royce Da 5’9…coolest voice…great rhymes and flow

August 12, 2009 at 7:33 am
(3) John says:

On the album, I think Ortiz gave the overall best performance. But in general, I gotta give it to Royce. He can adjust to and flow perfectly along basically any beat he gets on, he’s got the most listenable voice and dope lyrics.

(4) Dom Corleone says:

You already know.. Nickle Nine, no question.

(9) Jack says:

I think it’s def outta Joell, Crooked and Royce. Joe’s good, but doesn’t come close to these three, which imo are three of the best lyricists in the game today. Joell’s rhymes are so fresh and his flow can be amazing and his voice is great. Crooked can be ridiculous, he can spit some of the best verses i’ve ever heard, if he was consistent he would be the best. Royce is clever and can do sooo much, his voice goes smooth or nasty, his flow can do anything and he knows how to make songs. I’ve never ever liked Joey, but I’ve been getting used to him now that Slaughterhouse are here. He’s too corny and lame, never spits anything memorable.

Royce by far

August 12, 2009 at 1:56 pm
(11) chap34 says:

1. Joell Ortiz. (killed this album)
2. Royce (close 2nd)
3. Buddens (both buddens and crooked above average lyricists but not on joell’s and royces levels.)
4. Crooked I.

August 12, 2009 at 2:34 pm
(12) zack says:

1) Royce da 5’9″ def. number 1, lyrical genius
2) Crooked I doesn’t get as much love as he should, he creates a story that ties issues and words together.
3) Joell Ortiz could take the 2 position as well he def killed the album but wasnt as strong as royce
4) Joe Budden is creative with his selection of words but whines too much which disrupts the flow a little.

(13) deejay says:

Crooked I – Dude goes in all the time, he has sick lyrics with rhyme patterns & flows to match. His verses usually stand out the most to me.

Joell – Dude has great mic presence & personality which allows him to shine on alot of tracks(besides sick lyrics)

Royce – Dude is smooth & slick, very consistent. Royce never disappoints. I think he’s probably the glue of the grounp and comes up with alot hooks & concepts and is largely responsible for the overall song quality.

Joe – He’s up and down on this album. He whines a bit and his style don’t really allow him to shine on a project like this. He’s better as a solo artist where he can make certain themed & darker mood music(no pun intended). His voice & lack of clarity don’t go well with trying to murder tracks lyrically.

(14) Shiban says:

it would have to be royce, lyrically, it’s crooked, but overall its gotta be royce

August 12, 2009 at 5:42 pm
(15) H3ro says:

First Off, Very Impressed by this Album.
But Heres my ranking:

1. Royce-Come On. His Voice itself just makes him original…not to mention I’ve never heard a song by Royce that he didn’t amaze me. He’s Consistent.

2. Ortiz AND Crooked I-I really can’t choose between whos better out of these two. Ortiz has this lyricism that defines him as one of the brightest in the game…But Where “I” lacks a little their, he makes up for it in Angst!!! not to mention punchlines by “I” are super sick, so he diserves that rank as well.

3. Budden-Don’t get me Wrong. I like Budden, but I’ve heard tracks where he seems to play more of a support character rather than a full fledged member. He’s definitely sick, but his verses seem a little less creative than the other three at times.

again, I LIKE Budden. I thats just what I think about the group as a whole…

(16) Ryan says:

Normally, I would say Royce but based on this album Joell gave the best performance with Crooked coming in a close 2nd. Dope album.

(17) disait says:

1.Joell
2.Royce
3.Crooked

Budden is a idiot, he’s beefin legends en not in the way the game is!

August 12, 2009 at 11:22 pm
(18) Mitch says:

TBH I think as far as Slaughterhouse is concerned, that Joell and Crooked I have come the hardest. Royce in my mind is nowhere near them, and obviously joe budden isn’t either. But overall throughout his career I’d say that royce is on par with joell and crooked — but just not lately.

August 13, 2009 at 4:40 am
(19) Jay says:

Royce, no doubt. All 4 guys are super talented, but Royce is one of the greats in my book, and the other 3 are lucky to be working with him.

August 13, 2009 at 8:23 am
(20) Aquaman says:

Well… My personal opinion is that Joell is the best, with Royce being a close second…

Damn, It’s Gotta Be Between Ortiz And Royce! Crooked I Get’s The 3rd Spot. And (Cough) Yeah, You Know What It Is…

P.S. Henry, You Gonna Review The Album?

August 13, 2009 at 2:58 pm
(23) XTerminator says:

I gotta say … Joe is kinda the worst of the 4 MC’s … I mean , in another way , the other 3 are better than him , voice and flow . Joe really kinda disrupts the flow …
In fact , it’s hard to choose between them , but I gotta say on this album it goes to Joell Ortiz with Royce being a close 2nd . But , they all dope …

August 13, 2009 at 6:13 pm
(24) Cloudy says:

Crooked was the best. His flow, wordplay, punchlines and consistency was unmatched.

Joell comes in second. He had the raw energy that would spark a song into life especially at the start of the album.

Royce wasn’t bad but he wasn’t particularly special by any means.

Budden is similar to Royce. Sounded average on first listen but definitely grew on me as I heard the album more times.

August 14, 2009 at 1:13 am
(25) James says:

I really can’t name a worst because they’re all really good. Royce is my favorite. This is off topic, but is Crooked on Charles Hamilton’s album?

August 14, 2009 at 1:39 am
(26) Realtalk says:

Royce by far the best but crooked n joell are really really close I think that if budden wasn’t part of the group u couldn’t pick a best mc ..
Dnt get me wrong budden is good I just think that the other 3 are way better than him..

August 15, 2009 at 5:51 pm

(30) Troy says:

gotta be joey..i dont think his talent should be judged on just his work in Slaughterhouse Album.. that aint even close to his best tracks in albums such as Halfway House, Escape Route, Mood Muzik he by far the best mc easily jus listen to Dum Out, Sidetracked, State of You, Just be Different

August 18, 2009 at 10:32 am
(31) Dats It! says:

right i want you to read this Henry, and all the peole viewing this, cos i feel that people who read these comments just go “nah ther eopinion aint right, they dont know sh!t”

but nah, the best MC overall is prolly Royce, since his longetivity is better since he debuted before any of thses dudes, but on this joint, Joeel Ortiz comes harder than anybody on this sh!t, and crooked I comes a close second on who comes harder

order of actual Skill

Royce
Joell Ortiz
Crooked I
Joe Budden

on this joint

Joell
Crooked
Royce
Joey

August 19, 2009 at 11:56 am
(32) Crooked I says:

Royce is obviously the best. Crooked comes a close second. Joell and budden are HORRIBLE

August 20, 2009 at 2:35 am
(33) Jr. says:

Royce da 5’9″ by far.

August 20, 2009 at 4:27 am
(34) Ollie says:

Gotta be Royce, he even names himself as the leader on the album. But through Slaughterhouse I’ve picked up a lot of of Joe Budden’s albums, he lays down an insightful track with ease. Crooked brings that aggression giving the group a Rawness, while Joel Ortiz could rap for a month solid and not break a sweat. Just when I was about to give up on hip hop, these four have come and given the game a slap in the face. Thank God for Slaughterhouse!!!!!!!!!!!!

(35) T-Blayn King of the 6 says:

Can someone explain to me why Joe Budden is in this group? You got three lyrical monsters, one from the West one from the Midwest and one from the East, then inexplicably one mediocre rapper from New Jerz. Wheres the love for the South? The way I see it Killer Mike would’ve been a perfect fit for the group. He’s got the bars to keep up with the other three and he’s been through some sh-t that has kept him under the radar just like the other members.

I’m saying:
Joell
Royce
Crook
Buttons

September 7, 2009 at 8:15 am
(36) travis says:

Crooked I.
its not even close

October 2, 2009 at 11:38 am
(37) X-Terminator says:

If they wanted to add an MC from the south , I’d say Chamillionaire maybe will be a good choice instead of Lil Wayne or T.I. …
I’ve never heard any of Killer Mike’s joints so I don’t know him …
But Cham can even flow fast like the other 3 (Crooked,Joell,Royce) on some songs …
And he’s a great lyricist and kinda underrated while Lil Wayne is waaaaaay overrated …
That’s just IMO …

(39) FThat says:

Crooked I is the best rapper alive he could carry this group by himself. That said the other three are tremendously talented. If you need more proof of Crooked’s greatness after listening to the Slaughterhouse album a few times all the way through. Please refer to http://www.bossboard.com and listen to Crooked I’s “Hip Hop Weekly” series no one and I mean no one is F-CCIn with that.

(40) SwizzY says:

I think they all are equal.

July 14, 2010 at 4:23 am
(41) peder2 says:

As far as lyrics and flow are concerned it s defenately Crooked. The boy kills every verse.

Joell is also able to spit hard.

Royce’s lyrics are not as good as those from crooked or Joell.

Joe Buddens flow cant reach all of the other members. And why is he beefin with other rappers?? That do really suck.

So:

#1 Crooked
#2 Joell
#2,5 Royce
#4 Joe Budden

(42) Jon says:

Honestly there isnt a worst rapper in the group it varies from song to song but if i had to say the best is Royce Nickle Nine hes consistent and always nice

February 27, 2011 at 5:26 pm
(43) HDN9ne says:

Joell goes so hardd on this album its unbelievable, his lyrics and shizzz, they are outa this world. But Royce is one hell of voice; he’s got flow, lyrics, aggression and he just makes yu wanna punch a wall cos he’s so good. Sayin that, i think its a really close call between Joell and Royce, then comes Crooked I and then Joey. I dont think joey knows what he’s doin on this album. LOOOL

(44) b3astFrmTha3ast says:

this is in order from best to worst-

1. crooked I
2. royce da 5’9
3. joe budden
4. joell

thats the truth, crooked I kills it the most in shady records besides eminem and yelawolf!

July 30, 2011 at 4:07 am
(45) $taxx says:

honestly its between Joell and Royce 2 me… great lyrics, delivery is well put together both shyne… id like to see them battle 4 the fun of it 2 c whos the best – $taxx

October 20, 2011 at 3:27 am
(46) SoLo 2012 says:

Crooked I by far. Did ya’ll even listen to the album? Crooked demolishes every verse he spits, he’s got the multi’s, punches, delivery, metaphors, etc. And btw, he doesn’t even write most his rhymes! When they were on hard knock TV, Joell and Royce admitted that Crook needs to be on peoples top 10 list of all time… That speaks for itself.

1. Crooked I
2. Royce da 5’9 (Raw voice, has the crazy/witty punchlines)
3. Joell Ortiz (Has mic presence, and a crazy flow on some tracks)
4. Joey (Voice stands out, but didn’t do as well on this album as his solo projects)

I usually like Joey more than Ortiz, but on this album, Ortiz def had the upper hand than Joey.

January 15, 2012 at 10:55 pm
(47) Slink says:

1.Crooked I is the illest; lyrical genius
2.5’9 is dope ass hell
3.Joell is just insane, crazy flow
4. Not relly fellin Joe Budden, feels like whines a lot

February 22, 2012 at 5:21 pm
(48) FanFirst says:

The best in the group, if strictly seen from a “master of ceremonies” perspective, Crooked Intriago’s the best, it’s not even debatable.
If we talk about a “what type of lyrics that suit your personal agenda” perspective, the definition of the “best rapper” in SL will ofcourse vary depending on who you ask.

August 27, 2012 at 11:24 am
(49) Trent says:

My order would be

Crooked
Royce
Joe
Joell

On this project..
As solo artists Joe Budden is light years beyond the other 3..
Royce is a personal favorite but his punchlines don’t match Joey’s lyricism.

September 1, 2012 at 6:03 pm
(50) Prodfeatme says:

Really? You all think Joey is the worst?! Jeez.. He’s my favorite.. And to the guy that called him “Buttons” in 4th place.. Your a moron that doesn’t know hip hop.. Your all idiots

December 4, 2012 at 5:53 pm
(51) JDUBZ says:

It makes me happy that there isn’t a consistent favorite among this page. They’re all ridiculously talented and deserve it.
However………

1. Crooked I. actually listen to his lyrics and flow
2. Royce and joell. I enjoy 5′ 9″ more but joell has too ridiculous of a flow.
4. Budden. He impresses me a lot but he acknowledges his rap game isn’t quite as advanced. But, he’s crucial to their sound
