Mid-Year Report: 10 Best Rap Albums of 2009 (So Far)
Monday July 13, 2009
2009 has produced more duds than any other year in recent history, which makes picking the best rap albums of the year a big challenge. That said, there were still a handful of albums that managed to sustain our faith in hip-hop through the first half of the year. Here are the Top 10 Rap Albums of 2009 (so far).

Lol weak year so far id say
(Fall looks promising. – Henry)
Thanks for the list Henry. Not sure about DOOM being that high, but I agree in general from the albums that I have heard this year.
(I appreciate that. — Henry)
No Dead Prez OR Zion-I – BUT Feminem, UGK and Red & Meth ARE on the list??!! WTF. Those look more like sponsored results than anything.
At least Doom made the cut, and glad to see that wack-a*s jadakiss album ISN’t on the list.
(I enjoyed the dead prez/Green Lantern mixtape, but this list is strictly about LPs and EPs. — Henry)
What? No ‘Padded Room’?
i liked the list i have like half of those might half to go get the rest now
mos’ album was the only sick one on that list. but i’m very selective. Overall good list, Henry.
(Oh boy. And I thought I was picky. — Henry)
This list is a little crazy. The Last Kiss should definitely be on here and i’m not sure if you heard the Maino album yet but its fire. Mos def’s album was whack man. I gotta admit i’m not a huge mos def fan, but my friends that are even admit that it’s whack.
Nice List overall Henry. Loved G&E’s album, along with my #1, K’naan’s “Troubadour”. Brother Ali, UGK, Mos Def I liked. Don’t like seeing MF DOOM that high to be honest. I liked Joe Budden’s album myself, but I’m guessing the poor production quality is what kept it off… Looking forward to the rest of the year. Hopefully we still get treated to Raekwon, Jay- Z, Lupe… Slaughterhouse will be everywhere. Not holding my breath for a “Detox” though haha
(Padded Room was a letdown. I hear you on Detox. *sigh* — Henry)
Was The Blaqprint released to late, or it just didn’t made the list?
(Didn’t make the cut. — Henry)
Henry, it kills me that you consistently overlook Canadian emcee K-Os. Anyone whose tastes go beyond the mainstream should take a good look. This man is on another level.
(MimesisBTG is right, I”ve covered k-os a few times here. “I Wish I Knew Natalie Portman” is one of the best hip-hop songs of the year. — Henry)
@Kemp
Henry is the one who put me onto K-Os in ‘06 when he dropped Atlantis…I’m just saying….
I dnt think i can argue with the list except N.A.S.A should be tenth id say
1.Mos def
2.Knaan
3.DOOM
4.Eminem
5.UGK
thats my opinion
Glad 2 see DOOM on the list
Were is tech n9ne henry do you even listen to rap?
Like Always great list but I myself would have put Chemical Warfare on their
Hello, Henry. I like your listing of albums, but will we ever see a review (or reviews) of the underground/independent artists that you list? Because, We, the People are always in need of something that’s refreshing and uncompromising to the mainstream/commercial rap. I would greatly and gladly appreciate very much!!!!!
(I’ll see what I can do. — Henry)
Tech N9ne has to be one of the whackest rappers out IMO.
Mitch put your soulja boy cd in the trash and listen to tech
nah no, list is screwed, missin tech drake messy fly kiss and u gotta give the 1 spot to eminem his album was sick
I’m very happy to see Brother Ali’s EP on this list. It’s amazing and I like that G&E was on here too. I’m going to buy Ecstatic when i can.
Horrible Year so for
What about Tanya Morgan and Grand Puba.
Comin up though
Kid Cudi
Jay
Lupe
Brother Ali
@Mitch,
Are you serious? How can you hate the N9ne? Youre real name must be Mitchell Bade, huh?
Does Chamber Music not count as an album, or did you just not include it? Real good list though, hadn’t heard the Brother Ali EP till I saw this list.
