After his much-ballyhooed fallout with Def Jam, Joe Budden quickly became a fan favorite. He epitomized that handful of young MCs who, in their own stubborn way, pledge allegiance to lyricism and vivid storytelling, sometimes at the expense of mainstream recognition. We watched as Jumpoff Joey magnetized listeners with his brilliant Mood Muzik installments, a series of mixtapes that sounded better than most full-length albums. With his setbacks behind him, Budden hooked up with upstart Amalgam Digital for his sophomore album, Padded Room. So what does a Joe Budden album sound like independent of the honchos at Def Jam meddling in the creative process? Well, pull up a seat and make yourself comfortable as we explore Padded Room.

Padded Room is a good album however it didn’t reach my expectations after listening to Mood Musik 3. I’m a fan of the storytelling and the real words that Joey unleashes. I give Padded Room a B- or C+.

Overrall, the ablum is pretty good. But contrary to popular beliefs, the lead single was not supposed to sound the way it did. i encourage everyone to go to youtube and listen to Fyu-chur’s original version the way Joe agrred to. But when the single leaked, mixing engineers, executive producers, and/or Joe himself changed the track to sound the way it does on the album. Please get your facts straight concerning this young producer and put the blame where it belongs on them. Research before you make this statement and spread the true facts concerning this single and this promising producer. Also ask the questions in your review and to Joe “why did you change this song from the snippet to this version?”

I am so sick and tire of the reviews concerning the lead single the future. The version was changed from the snippet to this version on the song. Please go to youtube and see the 2 differences. Please state maybe the future could have been a smash hit if those unknown would not have touched the original version. It’s not Fyu-chur’s fault

Jamie (or John… if you’re the same person who commented on my blog),

I can’t be taken to task for reviewing the album version of “The Future” instead of the one that made the cut. I’m here to review an album. If it made it onto Padded Room, then that’s what I’m looking at and commenting on. It’s a shame that Fyu-Chur’s preferred version didn’t make the cut…

It’d be great if Fyu-Chur spoke up on the matter/made it public that he’s not happy about the way Amalgam is running the biz.

then comment correctly. the snippet version or this version since the snippet/trailer was the official leak of this song. and give it your thoughts about it. just get the straight facts out there. the snippet or the change of the intro. as a critic what do you think? since you’re critiquing the song track by track. Because joe wants the public/fans to think that fyuchur sent in this track this way and not the other way around. fyu-chur knew his reputation would be ruined with this version. so i’m giving you some facts that you don’t know. you have the power of the pen. since you know about some additional facts use them to critic this song. “Preferably the snippet version would have been better”. And it’s not only Fyu-chur’s preferred version it was joe’s fans. Did you research that> It;s all on youtube or google it. It’s easy for this producer to be a target because he’s unknown and young. Instead of the studio producers joe is known to work with. their beats was just as wack but worded differently so it didn’t come off so harsh. I know how the game is played. don’t get it twisted. are you scared that Joe may put you on blast like he did the other reviewer commenting on Padded Room but specifically In my sleep. Did you even know the song had been changed? and he already did he’s not signing with them.

No. I am critiquing the album. I am not critiquing the album that coulda/shoulda/woulda been.

Sorry. I’m sorry that Fyu-chur and Budden’s fans feel like they got shortchanged.

I hope Joe puts my review on blast! That way, more people will read it. :D

Just bought “Padded Room” yesterday and I found it to be a solid album.

I agree with Ivan, the production was below expectations however I was impressed with Joe’s lyrics.

“Exxxes”, “Pray For Me”, “I Couldn’t Help It” are all must listen to songs for any Joe Budden fan.

I personally felt that The Game failed lyrically on “The Future”, but it’s a catchy song that I will catch myself singing in the shower…

Overall, Padded Room was a solid album. A four out of five stars in my opinion. While Joe’s lyrics were top notched, the album felt more like a mixtape than a true album. If your a Joe Budden fan, I would recommend you to buy this album.

I’m one of the few that’s normally not a big fan of Budden, I just don’t like his flow normally, but I thought Padded Room was a pretty good album. The production is weak, true. And Happy Holidays doesn’t fit AT ALL (though not a bad song), but it’s got some great songs.

Personal favorite is “Pray For Me”, I can listen to that all day and never get tired. Budden touches on some real deep ish on that track, and it’s become one of my favorites. I was surprised by all the religious talk throughout the album, but in a good way.

“Pray for Me” has Joey going real hard, reaching depths most rappers couldn’t even recognize, much less attempt to reach on their own. Can listen to that track over and over, never get bored with it. Agree totally on Happy Holidays – doesn’t fit AT ALL, but still a tight song. Overall, I really enjoyed this album…it’ll be in my car stereo at least until Busta drops his new B.S.
