Eminem's "Bottle" Breaks Download Record

Thursday February 12, 2009

How do you set up the most anticipated hip-hop album of 2009? Well, if you're Eminem you simply set a new record for highest first week download sales in the United States. Em debuted his comeback anthem, "Crack A Bottle," at the turn of the year. It has since gone on to shift a cool 418,000 digital sales, thus earning the coveted No.1 spot on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. That upstages the record previously set by Rihanna and T.I, who sold 335,000 digital copies of "Live Your Life." This is even more impressive considering that "Crack A Bottle" had no video and very little promotion from Interscope Records.

"Crack A Bottle," which rocketed from 78 to 1 on the Hot 100, features guest turns from 50 Cent and Dr. Dre, who also produced the track. The rap triumvirate of Em, Dre, and 50 Cent are putting finishing touches on their hugely anticipated albums --Relapse, Detox, and Before I Self Destruct -- set to drop in 2009. Word on the street is that the hit single will appear on all three albums

I think 50 said that the song would be a bonus track on his i self destruct album. Eventhough NAS is clearly the goat, I have no problem addmitting Eminem’s fanbase is enormous and probably one of the most racially diverse (though they tend to be middle to upper middle class by in large). I literally know an 82 year old black lady that is one of those hardcore rabid Em fans. You tube if anything has propelled his sucess by making him more acessible to people who didnt like him by the media reports of him. I was one of those people until a year ago.

I think Eminem is the best rapper alive. That doesnt mean I dont also love Nas, Mos, Talib, Jay-Z, KRS, etc. At some point, you realize who really “spoke to you.” In other words, who do you most identify with and or “feel” on a personal level. Davey D once wrote something to the effect of “KRS could could rap circles and “destroy” a Chuck D in a freestyle or battle (or some other comparison) but Chuck D will always be the greatest because he spoke to me more.” Something like THAT.

Its probably why your favorites are really your favorites. I love Nas, but I dont think he really reaches and touches as many as Eminem does. But its all totally subjective.

RE: Crack a bottle…ehhh I always hate the first single from Em’s albums but end up loving the album. Its already “bought” in my mind; as is Dre’s.
