The Academy is the most notoriously racist, biased awards group out there. The fact that they gave EMINEM back to back best rap album awards and DR. Dre’s chronic 2001 didn’t get best album is the final proof. They’d be much more satisfied to just leave best rap album right out of the awards all together, but their racism was becoming far too obvious. Looking back on their timeline…there wasn’t even a rap award until 1996??!! Ya that’s right, Hip-hop wasn’t invented until 96…I guarantee if the industry was dominated by jews instead of blacks that award would be going back to the cold crush era.
Damn, someone’s mad salty.
Lammy, those same racist Grammy voters also gave the Best Rap Album award to Kanye West 3 times.
History’s Grammy winners are supposed to serve as an almanac of the best artists of those years. So you can either look back at who’s won for those years and accept it as a credible source, or you can question why a genre that’s been around for over 30 years has only been recognized by the academy for 12. Or better yet, question why artists like Biggie, 2pac, Nas or Wu-tang (solo or otherwise) HAVE never and WILL never win a rap award. Or how bout why Nas’ Stillmatic didn’t even receive a nomination? Or last of all, looking back on ALL of the nominees with the exception of a few, WTF?
And Kanye won 3x…so did Eminem – and again over Dre’s Chronic 2001…WTF
They really just pick the best, most mainstream album. Eminems albums were always that and so were Kanyes. And Wayne’s win tonight proves that further.
Now u can add the carter 3 2 dat list…also just look at the Chronic 2001 yes its a good album a great album one of the best albums I own but look at what its talkin about gun poppin ,blunt smoking, and low riders and now look at Eminems album …n den u can see y it won
RT, I don’t know if your saying the grammy overlooked the chronic 2 because of the misogyny or the controversy, but the slim shady LP is saturated with both.
And if you’re going to say chronic 2 is”…talkin about gun poppin ,blunt smoking, and low riders…” then you’d have to say that the SH LP is talking about raping 15 year old girls, domestic violence/murder, drug abuse and gay bashing.
Neither album is limited to those traits, but both are well known for them.
Yes true but the slim shady lp is not the album that beat dre’s 2001…n all of dre’s songs do have lyrics dat mention either drugs guns money b!t*h*s H*es sex and low riders (don’t get me wrong I love does songs and I think dre is great)…however u have eminem who has songs like GUilty conscience(witch yes it is a quite controversial track and talks about all dat u mentioned but the track is great) also songs like my name is yes it might be wacky but it was something new at da time he brought something different also there’s tracks like the way I am, cleaning out my closet, sing for the moment, remember me, rock bottom, till I collapse, also Stan witch is consider one of the best rap songs (not the best)also the MM LP is the best selling rap cd selling in a week about 2million copies the first week I mean dats pretty good reasons y the MM lp beat the chronic…also I don’t understand u bcuz u criticize rappers such as lil wayne and TI for rapping about stuff dat r not important like drugs, guns, weed, sex, women, cars, and how much money they have and yet u like DRE who talk about pretty much da same stuff again I’m not saying dats bad dres one of my favorite rappers its just dat I think dat da one beein bias is u…
the awards are voted on by other musicians and artists IN the music business. Maybe Henry knows some more details, but I believe all of our favorite musicians and artists get a vote. Its not like theres some small group of people who decide who all the winners are.
And Eminem’s albums are far superior than Chronic 2001. Stop crying. I dont agree with all the Grammy winners but I certainly dont think they’re racist.
Just want to remind everyone that both Diddy and Nelly are Grammy award winners. think about that for a while.
Your right RT. I am biased we all are. that’s what makes up our opinions. It’s the reason for our bias that makes it acceptable or not.
Also an album about straight gangsta sh*t wasn’t even original 10 years ago when chronic 2 came out and i was like 16, but it was well produced and mastered. So what’s T.I’s excuse for coming with an album that doesn’t take that any further in 2009?
And I was mistaken. It WAS the MM LP that beat the Chronic 2. Less of a stretch, but still in my opinion and that of all the hip-hop heads I know, better than the MM LP. Either way I guess it’s getting into one opinion versus another. And I still think you have a better idea of good music than the likes of bryan, but commercial success is NOT supposed to determine the winner of a Grammy. To quote the academy themselves “The GRAMMYs are the only peer-presented award to honor…overall excellence in the recording industry, without regard to album sales or chart position.”
Looking back on the winners, this is simply BULLSH*T! That being said, if you agree with the majority of the winners on the list, it really says a lot about your knowledge/opinion of Hip-Hop.
Bryan, thanks for the reminder of Diddy and Nelly. Was that supposed to support your argument that all of our favorite artists get a vote? Those are just proof of how out of touch with the rap genre the academy is. Those are two of the WACKEST winners ever (up there with hammer and big willy). And nobody’s crying over here. That would’ve required me to have expected anything else from the shammys.
As far as the electoral process involved, it is a relativly small group of 150 that ’screens’ for ‘eligibility’ before the 12,000 voters even get a chance to vote on the best.
Don’t believe me? Check it right from the dog’s mouth:

After this year’s grammies we can conclude that grammy awards for hip hop are an inaccurate depiction of the real hiphop genre. Why do they pick the most marketed and most played album for the win? Where was outkast? Where was their nomination for royal flush. Where was best rap album nomination for Blu for under the heavens? The point is awards shows are fake. They do not represent the rapper’s skill or an artist’s hardwork spend into an album. Lil wayne is overmarketed garbage. And Lammy why are you promoting Dr. Dre so much when he doesnt write his own songs?
@lammy
Well TI, lil wayne, (or any other rapper)or dre rap about what dey rap about because dats what dey do dats what dey experience dey talk about what dey have live or what dey do TI talks about money and guns and drugs cuz he does all dat I mean dats y he’s goin 2 jail just like we kno dre talks about money and low riders and drugs cuz dats his life and the stuff he lives der beein real 2 what dey do so yeah ti don’t bring anything new but he’s just keeping it real 2 what he knows I mean I’d lose respect for him if hed start talkin about politics or sum issues dat r affecting us and didn’t even kno what he was talkin about…
Also yeah ders rappers dat have song for diffrent people pers the dance songs the ridding songs the serious songs the songs that talk about important issues but we kant expect every rapper 2 just rap about all the issues dat affect use I mean we need diversity and dats wat music is and its meant 2 reach different people and ders different songs dat people can relate 2 .. I personally lisen 2 all rap songs(well just about) but I do kno what songs and rappers are good, and the other songs I lisen just for fun or for my own entertainment..so I respect just about every rapper and what dey do da only ones I kant stand are rapper like solja boi…
And yes I kno u have ur opinions and I’m not about 2 change da way u think like ur not goin 2 change the way I think and I actually respect what u have 2 say I just think u were beein 2 harsh on Em who is a pretty good rapper when he does not make dumb songs and no I also do not agree with every grammy winner der is people dat 2 start off should have never even been nominated like diddy nelly or hammer….
It didn’t take this year’s grammy’s to come to that conclusion. And as far as hyping up dre so much, I really don’t think that the album is an ‘atristic masterpiece’ by any means, but I do feel that it was one of the most influential, difinitive albums of the generation (regardless of who wrote the lyrics). I was mainly just using it to prove a point. But apparently it’s not as widely accepted opinion as I thought. But I know I’m not alone.
Check Henry’s top 100 albums, and see where he ranks the album in relation to others in question.
BTW Below the heavens was definitely worth whatever award it could have been nominated for. I’m glad a grammy didn’t tarnish this masterpiece.
