Study Links Music Tastes to Personality Traits

Tuesday September 9, 2008

An interesting study by a psychology professor found there's a link between music taste and personality traits. More than 36,000 people around the globe took part in the survey, the biggest of its type ever conducted.

Psychology professor Adrian North says, "People do actually define themselves through music and relate to other people through it but we haven't known in detail how music is connected to identity." The findings are intriguing, to say the least.

Contrary to popular belief, heavy metal fans are gentle and at ease with themselves. The downside, according to the study, is that they tend to be slackers. Fans of heavy metal and classical music share character traits of being creative and introverted.

Want to boost your self-esteem? Pick up a some jazz or classical music albums. Heavy rock fans supposedly lack self-belief. The study also concludes that hip-hop fans are outgoing. Do you agree?

That is on point! I agree. I do think hip-hop fans are outgoing since hip-hop is such an audacious art form. Of course, personality traits run the gamut, but I definitely see a connection between identity and musical choice. Great addition to the page.

I just think we should remember that correlation doesn’t equal causation. The music corresponds with rough character traits, but the causes are likely more complex than simply the music. But I think you know that, Henry. :P

i think mainstream hiphop fans are outgoing, but people who put more thought into their music can be different

I extremely disagree. All i listen to is heavy metal and the hardest stuff there is. The fact of what u listen to does not determine what type of personality you have. In fact, I think it more of an opposite thing. I.E. I listen to heavy metal, yet I am very hard-working, and have good self-esteem, except i am introverted. My brother, listens to country, but very much lacks self-esteem and does not work hard. I think the music you listen to is somewhat of an opposite release of what u really are. Country sings about hard work so you feel better about the work you do not do, and heavy metal sings about anger and hate because this is what heavy metal fans do not do (being introverted and gentle, which is exactly what i am… very affectionite and loving). Even noticing at metal concerts, although in mosh pits the ultimate goal is to push people and release anger, if someone falls u help them up and then throw them back in. Its ironic in a way, but also cool.
