Kanye Debuts New Single, "Love Lockdown" at VMAs

Monday September 8, 2008
Amid screaming fans and anxious peers, Kanye West gave the world the first taste of his latest single, "Love Lockdown," to close out last night's MTV Video Music Awards. Clad in a grey suit with a red, broken heart on its left chest-pocket, Kanye rocked the house without rapping a single line. "Love Lockdown" features a thunderous bassline and sputtering piano licks. Kanye, who vowed never to return to the VMAs after failing to win an award at the 2007 event, truly entertained the crowd. Watch the video of Kanye's "Love Lockdown" performance below and feel free to share your thoughts.

While we're still talking about the VMAs, who else was surprised to see Mary J Blige's "Fine" music video nominated in the Best Hip-Hop Video category? That's what happens when you get rid of the R&B category. Speaking of best hip-hop, Lil Wayne walked home with that one for his "Lollipop" video.

I knew this day was coming.. Kanye’s been singing on various different songs lately like “Put on” plus more.. He doesn’t really do any rapping any more and I gotta say I’m disappointed because nowadays he chooses to sing these “auto-tune songs” instead of rapping. I have nothing against singing but I enjoy more the “Hey Mama” type of singing than this.. I can’t really understand why Kanye has decided to join this “auto-tune” family, I think there’s plenty of T-Pains and Lollipops already and I always thought that Kanye was a producer/rapper with originality. But this ish ain’t original.. It’s far from it.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this song. I haven’t been a fan of this decades’ Hip Hop. Trashy mindless lyrics and a total lack of melody and musicallity have made Hip Hop generic and thoughtless. This song brings back a little bit of soul and original beat to a genre that desperatly needs it. Good job Kanye. I think this song stretches outside of its Hip Hop labelling and will have mass appeal.

Tyna, your sweeping generalizations of hip-hop are a bit misinformed. There has been plenty of music released this year alone that isn’t “mindless,” “generic,” or “thoughtless,” and Kanye rocking an autotuner for one song doesn’t really make him hip-hop’s messiah, it makes him part of the growing trend that leaves a large contingency of hip-hop loyalists befuddled: rappers whose careers now revolve around a vocoder rather than lyrical ingenuity or delivery. Kanye isn’t inventing anything here, he’s latching onto the computer sing-song trend, and it won’t age well.

VMA’s ……wack!!!!!! who really cares about the VMA’s???? Bring on the BET Awards! MTV needs to do a serious overhale on the so called Music awards. I don’t know who I like more now Milli Va nilli or Christina AguLipSynica. She was garbage. Well I guess thats what we get from WHITEAMERICA….!!!!!!! I would have rather listened to Jimmy Page do a 20min guitar solo with Eminem flowing. And the Douchebag of the year goes to Britney Spears!!! Way to go MTV!!!! I will be the 1st white person to boycott the VMA’s now. A**holes!!!!!!!!!!!!
