After Estelle's 2004 debut, The 18th Day, stalled at No.40 on the U.K. chart, V2 Records refused to back her second album. So, John Legend took the talented songwriter under his wings and flew her to the States where she signed a deal with Atlantic via Legend's Home School imprint. Within a few months, she drew comparisons to the likes of Lauryn Hill and Amy Winehouse. But is that the hype machine at work? Well, here's the verdict on Estelle's U.S. debut, Shine.
