Kanye's Mom Passes Away

Monday November 12, 2007

Kanye West's mom and manager, Donda West, has passed away, according to various reports. The 58-year old woman's death was "the result of complications from a cosmetic surgical procedure," according to family spokesperson Patricia Green.

Dr. West was the former chairwoman of Chicago State University's English department, where she had been working since 1980. She also served as chief executive of West Brands LLC, the parent company of Kanye's business ventures. In addition to that, she chaired the Kanye West Foundation, an nonprofit organization that seeks to decrease dropout rates in America's high schools.

Kanye West often rapped about his close relationship with his mother. His 2005 album Late Registration featured a song titled "Hey Mama", an ode to his mom. She was also referenced on "Never Let You Down," "Touch the Sky," and, most recently, "Big Brother."

Similarly, Donda West shared details of her relationship with Kanye in her book debut, Raising Kanye: Life Lessons From the Mother of a Hip-Hop Star.

Condolences have been pouring in from Kanye's fans at his blog, Kanyeuniversity.com.

May God be with you Kanye. Losing a parent is a hole in your heart forever, but you will feel her with you everyday. Know that she is with you and watching over you – protecting you. When you are ready, use that strenght to honor her.
