CD Review: Little Brother's Getback

Monday October 29, 2007

Getback, Little Brother's first album since 9th Wonder's dramatic departure (9th released his latest solo CD, Dream Merchant Vol II, earlier this month), is finally upon us. Obviously, the question on the lips of LB fans is, "How will the duo fare in the absence of their hit-maker 9th Wonder?" That's a question we'll attempt to answer with our Getback review.

BET dismissed LB, when did this happen

(3) Henry says:

A couple years ago, BET refused to air the video for LB’s first single. Their reason? “It’s too intelligent for our audience.”

I am really disappointed with Get Back.
Of course I was not happy with 9th being dumped. But hey, if LB wanted to take their sound in a different direction, then fine. If Common didn’t do the same thing with No I.D., there would have been no Like Water For Chocolate.
My problem is that this album is not a new sound for LB. There are no Premier beats. There are no Pharrell beats. There are no Kanye beats. There are no…well, you get the point.
This is still laid-back, slow beats. No fast tempo. No club tracks. No workout music.
So basically, to me they are watered down beats. If they just wanted laid-back, slow beats, give me 9th Wonder!
There is my beef. They didn’t make a courageous decision to take their music into a whole other realm. I could play Get Back and then the DJ Drama mixtape with LB and swear all the tracks are on the same album.
I can’t see how someone can listen to this album and say they have moved ahead of the Minstrel Show. That album is top 10 all time for me! And the beats didn’t all sound the same. Say It Again and Beautiful Morning don’t sound like All For You or Slow Down.
So yeah, dissappointed with the album. They always bring it with the lyrics (Phonte is only behind Nas and Common for me) but after all of my years of listening to this music, lyrics ain’t enough. You gotta come right with the beats.

Good Clothes, Extrahard => Not slow, laid back songs, so…

Personally i think Big Pooh’s improvement as an MC has almost made up for 9th’s departure. The way Te and Pooh trade verses now is incredible.

BET seriously said that??? damn they even admittin how stupid they are… and that’s kinda dissin their audience(which im gladly not a part of), F**K BET nd MTV bopth those channels suck! neway Getback is atyte album, i mean it’s not gonna be Album of the year like “The Undisputed Truth” or “Ultimate Victory” but it’s a great album nonetheless, about where graduation is, great comeback.

“I am really disappointed with Get Back.”

Are we listening to the same album, ’cause the Getback is fiyah!

Of course I was not happy with 9th being dumped. But hey, if LB wanted to take their sound in a different direction, then fine. If Common didn’t do the same thing with No I.D., there would have been no Like Water For Chocolate.

Every artist has to grow, blossom and experiment at some point in their career. Camp Lo did it with “Let’s Do It Again”. Common did it with “Electric Circus”. Talib Kweli did it with “Beautiful Struggle”, and the list goes on. You gotta give respect for maturity.

My problem is that this album is not a new sound for LB. There are no Premier beats. There are no Pharrell beats. There are no Kanye beats. There are no…well, you get the point.

No, actually I DON’T get your point. How can you say this isn’t a NEW sound? Wow, you’re lost bruh.

This is still laid-back, slow beats. No fast tempo. No club tracks. No workout music.

“Two Step Blues” and “When Everything is New” (to name a few) are not slow. For the record, not ALL hip-hop is meant for the club. No workout music, oh well, suck it up and drive on…

So basically, to me they are watered down beats.

As if 9th’s weren’t occassionally on that same boat. Great beats, but not always spectactular.

If they just wanted laid-back, slow beats, give me 9th Wonder!

What’s the difference if it’s 9th or other producers? They have the chance to diversify their beat catalog. Let it go.

There is my beef. They didn’t make a courageous decision to take their music into a whole other realm.

Hard-hitting topics on life and just having fun aren’t courageous, especially in this hip-hop industry?

I could play Get Back and then the DJ Drama mixtape with LB and swear all the tracks are on the same album.

Nah, I don’t. You’re too dependent on 9th. You could say the same with their first 2 albums respectively.

I can’t see how someone can listen to this album and say they have moved ahead of the Minstrel Show.

That’s the problem! You’re using your EYES to see and not your EARS to hear.

That album is top 10 all time for me!

Nothing wrong with that.

And the beats didn’t all sound the same. Say It Again and Beautiful Morning don’t sound like All For You or Slow Down.

Alas, the album did have a monotonous vibe to it.

So yeah, dissappointed with the album.

Stop being close-minded.

They always bring it with the lyrics (Phonte is only behind Nas and Common for me) but after all of my years of listening to this music, lyrics ain’t enough. You gotta come right with the beats.

As I earlier stated, artists have to explore, evolve and experiment. Nothing stays the same forever, but I guess your ill-conceived thoughts about this impressive album will…
