Noose Tied Around Tupac's Statue in Georgia

Thursday October 25, 2007

It appears that the noose-hanging incident in Jena, Louisiana has inspired some mischievous people to vandalize the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts building in Stone Mountain, Georgia. The unknown assailants not only defaced the building, they also tied a noose around the neck of Tupac's bronze statue. According to the TASF, the statue was also tagged with rants and references to 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, in addition to threats against some record label executives and hip-hop artists. Local authorities in Georgia's De Kalb county are said to be investigating the case as a hate crime.

Tupac's mom, Afeni Shakur says she is not deterred by the incident.
"Although our hearts are temporarily in pain, our spirits have already forgiven the perpetrators," said Ms. Shakur in a statement. "Hate comes in all colors and genders therefore we will use this act of hate and ignorance to bring our community together and to pray for the healing of those who harbor such feelings. With God's guidance, the work of the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts and Peace Garden will continue to positively impact and transform our community."

One man has been arrested in connection with the incident. Authorities are still examining the stickers that were plastered all over the statue.

This was reported in the Atlanta Journal constitution:

DeKalb County police spokesman Marcus Hodge said no noose was around Shakur’s neck, but rather an orange nylon string with a wooden cross attached. He added that the incidents are not being investigated as hate crimes.

I’ll see if I can find any new info on this.

Obviously there are different sides of the story. The “noose” and “hate crime” claims came directly from a statement sent to me by the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation.

There are definitely two sides to the story. I posted this comment because it appears to be premature for the Dekalb County police to rule out the possibility of a hate crime so early in the investigation.

Wow. This was an intellegent Conversation before I decided I was gonna add something =P

The story I heard was about the nooses too, from a friend of mine not far from Dekalb County in Georgia, but I just see it as an answer to the Jena six Rebellion…There are still people in this world that don’t accept the freedom of Black people, yet we just don’t accept that until someone’s being murdered by some X-clan member.

Being Young, its hard for anyone to understand what I’m saying, but I just wanted to point out that Georgia has a state flag representing how things were before the Civil War Broke out, which was basically over Keeping Slaves in the south. We can talk all day, make as much money as we want, but there’s always somethere there to keep Black people from reaching their full potential.

And I know. I live in SC. Racism City.

So I just wanna say that this shouldn’t be taken lightly, but more as a warning of things to follow…Just Like Brother Ali’s Song Goes.

“He’ll see what I see and know that freedom ain’t free”

Are we going to be ready for a race WAR! What do this racists want from our people? We belong here, every race, religion and ethnic group have had some moments that they’re not so proud of. Like the white man that videotaped having sex with a baby, very sick, but we don’t say that all white men in have sex with babies. Why can’t we live in peace! Our communities, rural, inner cities and suburbs are bearing the toll of high school dropouts, drug abuse, unemployment and sexual predators. I hope that this may UNITE the black race and also, bring other races to come together towards peace in America.
God Bless all you brothers that are having it really hard, in the words of TUPAC, “Keep your head up.”
