T.I. Arrested on Federal Gun Charges

Sunday October 14, 2007

T.I. was arrested by federal officials just moments before he was scheduled to appear at the recently concluded B.E.T. Hip-Hop Awards. The 27-year old rapper was arrested on suspicion of purchasing illegal machine guns and silencers he had his bodyguard pick up on his behalf. He was taken into custody at a shopping mall, where he planned to purchase the weapons from undercover agents from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The ATF initiated an undercover operation on October 2, after learning that T.I. had given his bodyguard about $2,200 in cash to buy machine guns without registering them. "This convicted felon allegedly was trying to add several machine guns to an already large and entirely illegal arsenal of guns," said David E. Nahmias, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia. It's a violation of U.S. federal for a convicted felony to purchase firearms through other people.

According to court documents, federal agents found three firearms, one of them loaded, in a car driven by TI. A police search of T.I.'s Atlanta home allegedly also turned up six weapons in a bedroom closet, five of them loaded. T.I.'s bodyguard told federal agents that the rapper had previously given him money to purchase guns on his behalf on nine separate occasions.

Despite his absence from the ceremony, the self-named King of the South won big at the BET Hip-Hop Awards. He tied for "CD of the Year" with Common, who received the award on his behalf. "I salute my guy T.I., who also won, wherever he is," said Common at the event.

There you have it, T.I. fans. Proceeds from your CD purchases go towards the procurement of guns that are substantially heavier than T.I.

Of course, it’s all a plot & it’s called the Pit bull/drug/pot/weapons conspiracy against the hip hop thug culture….

Could anyone possibly be so stupid to believe that??? Oh yeah.

i hate feds. i love t.i. is they put him in jail for protecting himself he’ll just come back harder like pac did with all eyez on me (not that i’m comparing t.i. to 2pac, because no one is as good as pac is)

(6) James says:

They wouldn’t be putting him in jail for “protecting himself.” They’d be putting him in jail for “obtaining illegal weapons and silencers.” Which is, you know, a crime.

(7) The Propa 1 says:

Sooo stupid. I don’t feel sorry for him. Another rapper sending the wrong message to the world. God blessed you. Why don’t you try to do better for yourself, family and community?

October 16, 2007 at 9:12 am
(8) Ms. Williams says:

It’s amazing how everyone on here is talking about how stupid he is but would it really matter if he was another random person. It’s easy to pass judgement on people when your opinion doesn’t count. Bottom line this dude is hated if he raps about something and it is seen is fake. Then you talk about him because his lyrics now hold weight. To the author of this article, its not the profits of this album that went to the purchase of those guns. 2,200 was pocket change for the man before he got in the rap game. Step up and give shine to someone that was real with his. Instead of throwing salt on a rapper that has been known as very clean and out of drama prior to this, try doing your own investigative reporting and be real with it….in other words, stop being a copy and paste writer. That goes for the anyone else that immitates the opions of others on this or any other matter..

(10) TONN-TONN says:

I totally agree with you Mrs. Williams. Everyone is passing judgment about something that they do not know all the facts about. T.I. did mess up by receiving the guns there is no denying that. I say fine the man and keep it moving but they are not because they will use him as an example. People forget to see that with or without the celebrity status he still just a regular guy and regular people make mistakes. As for the comment from The Propa 1. Mr.. Harris does do a lot for his family and community. He does more for his community then most people out here today with and with out money. Please everyone do your own research on situations before you post comments that belittle people. No one hear is GOD and only him alone holds the power to condemn someone.

(11) Mr Cruse says:

Can we as black people stop defending rich black people who f-up and SHOULD know better. If I hear another one of us defend the Mike Vicks, T.I.’s, and OJ Simpsons of the world I am going to scream. Look I am from the hood of Detroit, I did all kinds of sh!t when I was younger and got into all kinds of trouble. I am far from a saint but when I got older and had a chance to make something of myself I did, and I left all that foolishness behind because I am smart enough to know not to risk what I have now over non-sense. These celebs have far more to loss than I do so they should be more careful. Running illegal dog fights or buying illegal guns is just dump behavior for a millionaire…period…Yes we all make mistakes but we all need to be held accountable for our mistakes. This isn’t T.I.’s first encounter with the law, and if he was truly a role model he would be more like the Jay-Z’s of the world and leave that bs behind him. T.I. did the same thing before the BET Awards earlier this year (starting a physical fight with Luda’s camp) and apologized for his behavior then. Fact is this man is not a role model, he only makes good music but his isn’t one to pattern your life after cause he keeps f-in up, and because of that BET should take away the one award they did give him at the Hip-Hop Awards (because we as a society need to stop awarding ignorance)…He needs to get his act together and be rewarded once he proves he is truly a changed man…now watch the T.I. fanatics post calling me hater and whatever else…hahahaha

(12) Carla says:

Mr. Cruse:
Please visit Davey D’s MySpace page and view the official affidavit which accompanies the entire story before making any further comment because I have a very big problem with the body guard.

October 16, 2007 at 2:48 pm
(13) 6th Sense says:

“People forget to see that with or without the celebrity status he still just a regular guy and regular people make mistakes.”

Tonn-Tonn, if this guy was just any regular guy with no affiliations with the rap industry, I wouldn’t worry. But it’s ironic that represented hip-hop in that Hip Hop vs. America thing on BET. Now it’s hip-hop that will take the blame, not T.I. We’re long past the gangsta era of rap. Aren’t we?

October 16, 2007 at 3:10 pm
(14) Mr Cruse says:

Well first of all Carla thanks for sending a response to both this site and myspace page…as a true fanatic its good that you went out of your way to ensure I got your point…being very sarcastic if that wasn’t obvious. Secondly sorry that I choose not to get my “facts” from “Davey D’s MySpace page”, I prefer to get my information from accredited news sites. But I did read the affidavit on other sites (before I posted on this one) and I knew what I was writing before I wrote it. Yes its clear the bodyguard snitched on TIP, just like Mike Vicks people rolled on him. SO WHAT!!! I’m never been one who is big on people snitching on others to get out of crimes they themselves commented but that is an entirely different issue. It’s clear from reading the affidavit that TI clearly knowingly had illegal firearms in his home (rather he owned them or not is not of importance), just because you were snitched on don’t mean you’re excused from the crime you commented. So I reiterate every point that I said before. I feel anyone defending TI in this case should watch the R Kelly episode of the Boondocks (which coincidently came on last night…hmmmm).

October 16, 2007 at 3:22 pm
(15) Carla says:

That’s a very weak response because you cannot say that the body guard should not be personally responsible. You cannot pick and choose. Everyone must adhere to the same laws. Furthermore, my response was not a character attack and those so-called accredited sites (hopefully, they are the Washington Post, New York Times, etc.) and for the record these sources do not carry it!

October 16, 2007 at 3:46 pm
(16) Mr Cruse says:

1) East coast news sources are not the only accredicted sites

2) I never said the bodyguard shouldnt be held responsible for anything..so please dont put words in my mouth…I said “I’m never been one who is big on people snitching on others to get out of crimes they themselves commented but that is an entirely different issue. It’s clear from reading the affidavit that TI clearly knowingly had illegal firearms in his home, just because you were snitched on don’t mean you’re excused from the crime you commented.”

3) My post was not about the bodyguard. I dont know him and I dont care about him. It was about TI. He committed a crime (Im 90% sure of it based on the affidavit). And he is too old and too rich to be doing dumb sh!t like that. He has a responsiblity to his fans, his family, hip hop, and black society in general to be doing sh!t like that (just like 6th Sense said). Now you may feel like he didnt do anything… and if you want to discus that we can….but not on here…

October 16, 2007 at 4:48 pm
(17) Carla says:

You cannot simply discount the body guard because he is complicit in carrying it out. I am not saying what TI does is right. It is not. Furthermore, while east coast sources are not the only place for news. However checking http://www.cnn.com, there’s no mention of a hyperlink to see the affidavit. (For the record, I have searched the LA Times and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer for the same information). My problem is your lack of sources. See, I’ve quoted sources to back up what I am saying.

Dude, I f@&ked up, I did time, I f*&ed up again and did more time, all under the radar. I didn’t have cameras magazines, and a whole nation of morons debating my f&^ck ups. I also didn’t have money for decent legal representation like this guy, so as far as I’m concerned he’s got a leg up. Moral of the story is MAN UP, rich, poor, white, black, gay, straight, tall, short, who gives a sh!t, got balls big enough to f*&ck up, face the consequenses.

Guns, drugs, sex and alcohol. do they really have hiphop figured out. they seem to think so, i mean thats what those who dont know much on the subject are being led to believe hip hop is about. how many more rappers are they gonna guns after, aren’t there real problems to be looked into. oh i forget, the more rappers go to jail there safer the street become. think about it, no more cocaine, no more guns, no more roberies. it must be hiphop that leads people into all these things.

i guess in all fairness if hiphop artists want to associate themselves with that type of lifestyle then who is really in the wrong. still love TIP though

Seriously, how stupid can a n!gga be? Isn’t he already a two time felon? This is his 3rd strike! T.I. may be looking at 25 to life! What was he gonna do with all those guns anyway, invade Iraq? Cause that wasn’t just a few guns, that was an arsenal.

P.S. It’s not judging T.I. to say he did something retarded.

October 20, 2007 at 5:13 pm
(31) finisher says:

It seems as if Carla has backed down from her stance a little. That’s good.

Carla, when you’re a convicted felon, the police and the FEDS are going to be watching you at all times, even when you don’t think you’re being watched.

You know what happened here? Somebody set up the bodyguard, who then set up T.I. That’s how the whole “snitch” game is played. The FEDS always want the biggest fish.

The next move for T.I., is to actually have him tell the FEDS where he got some of the guns he already owns at. If he gives up some information, they’ll slap him on the wrist, and he may only do a few months in jail. If not, the FEDS will make an example out of him, and try to put him away for years.

So if you’re T.I., what do you do then? Do you snitch, and risk your street cred? Or do you not tell a thing, and basically end your rap career?

Don’t you understand why the FEDS aren’t going after guys like Mos Def, Andre 3000, or Common? It’s because they don’t do stupid illegal ish, and don’t have a criminal past, for the most part.

When in just about all of your rhymes, you’re rhyming about your criminal past, the FEDS are going to take notice to that.

I love T.I.’s music, but I don’t let it influence me into doing something stupid.

How many rappers have to go to jail, before the rest of them learn?

- Pimp C ( pistol charge )
- Project Pat ( pistol charge )
- Mystikal ( extortion, rape . . even though the woman was stealing from him and tried to extort money from him first )
- C-Murder ( murder charge . . at least he lived up to his name, right? )
- Beanie Siegal ( attempted murder )
- Tony Yayo ( smacking that teen boy )
- Ja Rule ( gun charge, although he says it wasn’t his gun . . surprise, surprise )
- Lil Flip ( on a ridiculous credit-card fraud charge )

I mean, how many of these brothas have to get in trouble with the law, before people actually get it?

I LOVE hip-hop. But the main problem with hip-hop today, is that you have a bunch of hood cats with criminal backgronds populating the game.

I mean, could you imagine Chuck D being arrested on a drug charge? Or Rakim being arrested for sexual assault? How about Heavy D on a pistol charge?

The whole “people make mistakes” argument is only valid, when someone hasn’t made a mistake before. And it might be valid if you’re a teenager.

But these are GROWN MEN that we’re talking about here. And they all know better. But even after they become rich, they can’t get that “hood mentality” out of their system.

The police and the FEDS know this. So all they have to do, is just sit back, and wait for them to f— up. And they almost always will.

Wow, why are some of you playing like this is a shock??? Hip-hop artists have wrote lyrics involving guns for years. It has probably been going on for longer than some of you have been on this earth.
Don’t you know that guns give you power. Guns make you stronger than the next man. Guns will keep your enemies at bay. Does that sound in anyway familiar to lyrics that you hear in the hip-hop culture??? Sadly, It is reality imitating art. Unfortunately its the same foolishness that got Pac and Biggie killed.
T.I. (Mr. Clifford Harris) is innocent until proven guilty. Unfortunately he is already on probation for a gun charge back in the 90’s. Stay up!

It’s easy enough to pass judgment on others when it’s not your freedom on the line, so I’ll pray for a positive outcome for T.I.P in this situation, and for his protection – so he won’t need an “illegal arsenal”.

I’m with the person who said don’t judge before you know the whole situation. I guess ya’ll genious’s didn’t know his best friend got killed and three wounded, after he did a show in Cincinatti huh? Having a person you love die in your arms and you can’t do sh– about it leaves you with a feeling like you let them down. So I don’t fault him for buying the guns, I fault him for not firing enough shots back. I’ve been in the military for the past ten years, if I’m on the battle field and I run out of ammo and then I pick up an illegal Mac 10 to kill my enemy and save my co-workers, do you think they’ll give a F–k where I got the gun from? We’re in America people, this world was built on railroading. Further more, he bought those for protection. The first thing your parents teach you is to always protect yourself and to lookout for you. Thats what he was doing.

alright,so i’m one of T.I.’s like #1 fan’s and i think it’s really dumb for him to be doing this(sorry)he could be doing way much more in life.he has kids, wife,he should be takin care of them instead of being a dumbass.i heard so much and i don’t know what to belive like the people are saying 15 years in jail and 1500 hours of communtiy service and i heard 1 year.so what how long?i think he should get out soon.it wasn’t all that bad well whatever.i cried when i heard it and i might again.
when he gets out i’ll be alot happy but till then i’m depressed and not JUST because.of that so :| I LOVE CLIFFORD JOSEPH HARRIS JR.

(81) keepinitreal says:

all of you people tryin to stand up for TI are dumb the fact of the matter is that he got caught tring to purchase illegal firearms with a prior felony conviction. on top of that who needs 6 weapons in their closet and then goin to purchase $2200 worth in automatic weapons. sounds to me like somthing is up no one needs that much protection

February 3, 2009 at 12:02 am
(82) kimmie says:

okay to start off no one knows exactly all the information about whats going on. we also dont know what the reason ti had all those weapons.so dont asume. he is only human and its not fair that just because he is famous we can make comments when we know we wouldnt like it if someone made comments of are mistake so lets think about what he is going through. he knows he is made a mistake and he is going to do time for it so lets be learn off of his mistake “you do the crime you pay the time” .simple as that!

(for number 3) um being a rapper has nothing to do with anything. rappers mess up just like everyday people. Just because you’re famous dosen’t mean that you are perfect. people mess up more than t.i everyday. but, because he’s a star people want to point the finger at him. basically you or anyone else have any room to judge because nobody’s perfect. and i agree with adriana 6thsense is a hater i bet he’s a big fat ugly lonely man who has nothing else better to do. get a life 6thsense
