What is Conscious Rap?

Saturday August 11, 2007
It can be argued that hip-hop originated as a conscious art form. After all, the only hip-hop acts to have been inducted in the Rock & Roll Hall fame, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5, kicked off their career with a conscious rap record aptly titled "The Message." But what exactly is conscious rap? Is it the same as "political hip-hop"? Walk with me, as we explore one of the most essential sub-genres in hip-hop culture.

Consciousness = knowledge of Self.
The Mainstream artist tend to be the business men of hiphop. they focus on what makes money, whether it be sex, drugs, alcohol, or violence.

The Conscious artist is a person who is aware of their responsibilities to the “people”. they use hiphop as a medium to educate the youth with the tools/information that they need to survive in this world. The display of “skills” are a proof of intelligence and discipline.
