Michael Jackson Buys Rights to Eminem's Catalog

I remember when Michael Jackson raised hell over Eminem's parody of the Gloved One the music clip for "Just Lose It." Em basically told Jacko to lighten up, it was all in good humor after all. Well, I wonder how the Slim Shady feels now that Michael Jackson owns the rights to two of his biggest hits: "Without Me" and "The Real Slim Shady."
Jackson, who owns a stake in The Beatles' catalog, recently acquired Famous Music LLC from Viacom. The new purchase grants him copyright access to the aforementioned Eminem songs, in addition to songs by Beck, Shakira, and Bjork."This is a milestone event for Sony/ATV Music Publishing," said Jackson in a statement. "The diverse collection of songs in this catalog range from timeless classics to contemporary hits, and I am pleased to add the acquisition of Famous Music to Sony/ ATV."

3.) How does Micheal Jackson still have money? I realize he took in a ton of cash, but hasn’t he pissed it away on lawyers, hush money, and the elephant man’s bones?

Don’t believe everything you hear, Michael still has a steady stream of income. He just got paid $10 million (or so we’re told) just to show up at a party held by some rich prince.
As for how this affects Eminem, that depends on exactly how much of the catalog Mike invested in. I don’t know the specifics of the agreement.

Just a comment regarding Michael Jackson acquiring the rights to EMINEM’s music catalog. I’m not an EMINEM fan. Nor am I now a Michael Jackson fan. I WAS a fan years ago, before he changed in a major way!!

I’d rather Michael Jackson not own rights to anyone’s catalog, but it’s a free market I suppose! I’m from the same generation as Jacko, so you can probably see why I’m not big on EMINEM.
I’m not personally into RAP, but each to their own. I was a bit disappointed at the faul language that has been left by previous commenters. It’s not that serious an issue! I’m also surprised that about.com allowed some of the language to be put up at all. Maybe this goes with Rap/Hip-Hop??
owning the publishings rights to a song AFTER its initial release, is not that big of a deal,..usually. Say, after awhile, a greatests hits is put out, they mite make 25 cents an album. And of course u still make $$ off the intitial release, but the sales for that unit has slowed down. U can also sell a particular song to a company, say for a commercial. Thats sold in a one time lump sum of money. Believe it or not, the most money made off an album, was Paul McCartney, when he made $1.80 per unit for an album, Tug of War.Just think, if an album goes Platinum, and u sign for 25 cents a unit, thats 250 thousand dollars to the artist. But like I said, thats with the intial releases, and even 25 cents is on the high end.
Well it was for sale so he bought it so what? I mean if anyone buys anything for sale it is theirs for the price so we have not right to comment. He paid for it. He did not steal it. End of story. It belongs to him now! Whatever we think of the two personalities involved it is a deal that was made fairly.

He feels he is more talented tha Michael Jackson, for him buying Em’s songs and making money out of Em’s talent when he can’t make it out of his own (gone) talent.
i think mj is a money making genius!! and that’s good that he bought other people’s music, wonder why eminem couldn’t hold onto his own songs?? maybe he’s not as smart as a lot of people think? and also, all of you hating on michael like he’s never gonna make it back in music…saw how successful the beatle’s current ‘love’ album is doing on the charts?? and that there are constant sold out shows in vegas for the ‘love’ album songs?? he gets $$ from all of that! and that michael is laughing all the way to the bank?? remember, you don’t necessarily have to release your own album to still be a powerhouse in the music industry…and remember the beatle’s ‘1′ cd with all those #1 songs?? that album sold 10mill. here in the u.s., so michael is doing ok and a lot better that some of you haters think…and to buy songs by eminem…maybe eminem is becoming broke considering that last wuss ‘re-up’ album didn’t do squat!! it didn’t even go to #1!! i give michael lots of props for buying eminem’s songs, wouldn’t surprise me if one day michael owned the entire eminem catalog. after all, at least michael was a straight A student and finished high school, eminem didn’t. that’s probably why he no longer owns 2 of his biggest songs…and will always pay michael first to perform it or use it for endorsements.

Like people have already said, Em is done with those songs. If he wanted, he could easily explode with much better songs than those 2. But others are right too. MJ knows what he is doing. He is smart and his income is insane. But, i doubt Em stresses about it every day. So they both win.
