Michael Jackson Buys Rights to Eminem's Catalog

By May 31, 2007

Follow me on:

I remember when Michael Jackson raised hell over Eminem's parody of the Gloved One the music clip for "Just Lose It." Em basically told Jacko to lighten up, it was all in good humor after all. Well, I wonder how the Slim Shady feels now that Michael Jackson owns the rights to two of his biggest hits: "Without Me" and "The Real Slim Shady."

Jackson, who owns a stake in The Beatles' catalog, recently acquired Famous Music LLC from Viacom. The new purchase grants him copyright access to the aforementioned Eminem songs, in addition to songs by Beck, Shakira, and Bjork.

"This is a milestone event for Sony/ATV Music Publishing," said Jackson in a statement. "The diverse collection of songs in this catalog range from timeless classics to contemporary hits, and I am pleased to add the acquisition of Famous Music to Sony/ ATV."

Three Questions:

1.) How does this effect Eminem?
2.) What’s in it for Micheal Jackson? Does he get future royalties?
3.) How does Micheal Jackson still have money? I realize he took in a ton of cash, but hasn’t he pissed it away on lawyers, hush money, and the elephant man’s bones?

Don’t believe everything you hear, Michael still has a steady stream of income. He just got paid $10 million (or so we’re told) just to show up at a party held by some rich prince.

As for how this affects Eminem, that depends on exactly how much of the catalog Mike invested in. I don’t know the specifics of the agreement.

Just a comment regarding Michael Jackson acquiring the rights to EMINEM’s music catalog. I’m not an EMINEM fan. Nor am I now a Michael Jackson fan. I WAS a fan years ago, before he changed in a major way!!

I seem to be the only female to comment so far, and I’m from Australia. I was just interested to see what others had posted on the subject.

I’d rather Michael Jackson not own rights to anyone’s catalog, but it’s a free market I suppose! I’m from the same generation as Jacko, so you can probably see why I’m not big on EMINEM.

I’m not personally into RAP, but each to their own. I was a bit disappointed at the faul language that has been left by previous commenters. It’s not that serious an issue! I’m also surprised that about.com allowed some of the language to be put up at all. Maybe this goes with Rap/Hip-Hop??

owning the publishings rights to a song AFTER its initial release, is not that big of a deal,..usually. Say, after awhile, a greatests hits is put out, they mite make 25 cents an album. And of course u still make $$ off the intitial release, but the sales for that unit has slowed down. U can also sell a particular song to a company, say for a commercial. Thats sold in a one time lump sum of money. Believe it or not, the most money made off an album, was Paul McCartney, when he made $1.80 per unit for an album, Tug of War.Just think, if an album goes Platinum, and u sign for 25 cents a unit, thats 250 thousand dollars to the artist. But like I said, thats with the intial releases, and even 25 cents is on the high end.

(12) Deb says:

Well it was for sale so he bought it so what? I mean if anyone buys anything for sale it is theirs for the price so we have not right to comment. He paid for it. He did not steal it. End of story. It belongs to him now! Whatever we think of the two personalities involved it is a deal that was made fairly.

He feels he is more talented tha Michael Jackson, for him buying Em’s songs and making money out of Em’s talent when he can’t make it out of his own (gone) talent.

(15) carol says:

i think mj is a money making genius!! and that’s good that he bought other people’s music, wonder why eminem couldn’t hold onto his own songs?? maybe he’s not as smart as a lot of people think? and also, all of you hating on michael like he’s never gonna make it back in music…saw how successful the beatle’s current ‘love’ album is doing on the charts?? and that there are constant sold out shows in vegas for the ‘love’ album songs?? he gets $$ from all of that! and that michael is laughing all the way to the bank?? remember, you don’t necessarily have to release your own album to still be a powerhouse in the music industry…and remember the beatle’s ’1′ cd with all those #1 songs?? that album sold 10mill. here in the u.s., so michael is doing ok and a lot better that some of you haters think…and to buy songs by eminem…maybe eminem is becoming broke considering that last wuss ‘re-up’ album didn’t do squat!! it didn’t even go to #1!! i give michael lots of props for buying eminem’s songs, wouldn’t surprise me if one day michael owned the entire eminem catalog. after all, at least michael was a straight A student and finished high school, eminem didn’t. that’s probably why he no longer owns 2 of his biggest songs…and will always pay michael first to perform it or use it for endorsements.

(22) The Trickster says:

Like people have already said, Em is done with those songs. If he wanted, he could easily explode with much better songs than those 2. But others are right too. MJ knows what he is doing. He is smart and his income is insane. But, i doubt Em stresses about it every day. So they both win.

Publishing rights means one always gets paid when something is released or bought.
mj gets paid when certain songs of Em’s, Bjork and shakira’s are released. paid for someone else’s work.

Very smart, yet crooked.
Did mj buy this after the “just loose it” video, if so good comeback( objective statement)

Is he trying to profit off today’s successful artists instead of his own work?

dignity my man!

(32) DN says:

Eminem does not know how to respect fellow artists. No true artist will behave the way he does. He will not last too long in the show business with an attitude like his.

July 31, 2009 at 2:54 am
(33) Drina says:

Eminem most likely never would have owned the rights to those songs anyway. Most artists don’t own the rights to their own music, especially not from the earlier parts of their careers. The record companies do. Where an artist receives royalties from album and single sales (and maybe usage, but I’m not sure about that), the entity that owns the “masters” or rights to a song gets an even bigger share of album sales and a bigger share anytime the song is used in a movie, tv show or commercial, played on the radio, or sampled for another song.

Eminem has always been stuck in the same mode as the “angry white rapper.” The schtick is old. He needs to grow up. Now Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon are helping him stay in the spotlight… I guess he’ll ride that horse until it’s dead.

(34) Eric says:

Let me say that I am in a sweet spot. I was young when MJ was at his peak and I’m not old during Eminem’s run. MJ was 10 times more talented and 10 times more famous around the world. He dropped more money on the ground than eminem will ever make. MJs investment in the Beatles catalog – cost was $45 million, is worth $Billion. The fact that eminem is a respected “artist” tells you how far we’ve fallen as a people.

Drina. # 32

Sorry but I have to burst your bubble.

Eminem is the best selling artist of the decade, and the best selling rap artist. So the whole “keeping him in the spotlight” is irrelevant. He’s been in the spotlight for going on 11 years. He will remain in the spotlight. He even had one of the best selling albums of 2009, and he has another one on the way. People(Mainly women) constantly complain about him, being offensive, having offensive lyrics, etc. But when it boils down to it, there is many many more artist that are far more offensive. At the end of the day, you pretty much need to just take the stick out of your ass and come to the realization that IT’S ONLY MUSIC. If you don’t like it, shut the hell up and not listen to it, it is that simple. You’re probably a Mariah Carey fan anways, The Warning is an awesome track that bitch deserved it, honestly.

Anyways Eminem is probably glad that someone as famous as MJ would want to purchase his songs.

(38) Batman says:

@ 34:
that’s a little racist, isn’t it?
Besides if you have ever listened to rap you have probably heard some black artist say something about as offensive as that, and there is no problem
•besides as someone already mentioned both OJ and mj got away with horrible crimes
• on the other hand, I mean when we look at the real world and not just your ignorant little imaginary world with not very well thought through arguments, when someone says something racist against white people in a song, which happens all the time in rap ( that’s much of the reason I stopped listening to it) it’s not that big a deal it seems like, but when it goes the other way it’s a big deal
now Im not talking pro- racism, but I want less racism towards white people ( it’s gotten way better though)
Eminem is awesome, Michael Jackson was kinda gay.

(39) Das says:

For those who bash MJ. He did what 99% of artist don’t do, own his own music. This is why Sony tried to sabotage him after Invincible was realeased. Some even believe that Sony was behind the negative media. They were trying to muscle him out of his catalogue, and that didn’t work, because Tommy Mattola might have bullied the likes of Mariah Carey, but he found out that he could not bully Michael Jackson.

Batman, if you followed MJ’s trial like I did, you would realze that the trial was a joke and the prosecution’s case was a joke. Watch Inside the Michael Jackson trial on youtube. You’ll see that it was a pretty easy defense.

(41) Ian says:

Looks like MJ didn’t take Eminem’s advice of “lightening up.” He must not know the way Eminem does things. If he’s listened to any of Eminem’s tracks (like the ones he bought), he’d know that he wasn’t really targeting MJ, but just any famous person who pisses him off. I’m not necessarily condoning it, but that’s just the way it is.

(44) just another person u don't know says:

Doesn’t MJ owning someone else’s songs (especially the beetles and Elvis’s) show that Mj us powerful? That he is a gOod buissness man? Michaels Neverland Ranch earns 2.5 billion dollars each year. MJ is rolling in money. It shows Michaels skills.

To Julie;
So what if he changed what he looked like. So many other People do that, but oh no, this is Michael Jackson so everyone pick on Michael Jackson. He is not made of bricks, he is human and has human rights. If ur a fan, u stick by them no matter what. Jacko is not his name. It’s Jackson u uneducated fool! Would u like it if someone called u stoopid or something like that. U are an older person and y’all momma still didn’t teach u to respect. Ur a disgrace so just shut up ok.

Eminimen is a talentless rapper who screams into the microphone cause no one wants to listen. He’s a jerk for making fun of someone he don’t know so I hope he burns in hell. MJ is a true legend, and buying ownershiP of other peoples songs shows power. So suck it.

U know I dont see the big deal yeah the incedent happen MJ spoke how he felt and em apologized MJ buys 2 songs and then before death wanted to work with EM… So why are all u people flippin out over this still seriously was Em the first person to do it? No. Did MJ take a shot at Tabloids for what they said about him? Yes. On another level after Em’s video no one really cared or make jokes as much eminem basically said what millions of people have said. I have enjoyed both artist MJ was a caring man and genius artist of POP!! But on the other hand Eminem has dealt with some thing people cant even dream about and made it out a genius artist of RAP!! So they have both exspressed their veiws in different ways.

(48) AQ says:

#37. Michael sold 24 million records from 2001-2009 through only two albums: Invincible (14,000,000) and Thriller 25 (10,000,000), whereas Eminem sold 64 million records through 6 albums. Considering the lack of promotion and the drawbacks for MJ in the 20th Century, Michael Jackson has comparitively sold more albums. About the topic, Eminem was disrespectful, and he didnt even apologize for it. So, it was only natural for MJ to react.
