Photo Gallery: Top 10 Female Rappers

Friday March 30, 2007
Here's the grueling truth: Women are largely under-represented in hip-hop today. In the testosterone-driven world of hip-hop, only a handful of the ladies have succeeded in breaking the mold. So, in the spirit of national women's month, we celebrate the careers of ten prolific femcees. See our Top 10 Female Rappers gallery to find out who they are.

Disclaimer: This list is based mostly on impact and prowess, and should not be regarded as gospel. Any omission is highly intentional regretted. Think I forgot someone? Make your own list here.

That was Top 50 Emcees, not Rappers. The Emcee list measures a more balanced and varied skill set.

I do not like this list simply because Lauryn Hill had one solo album that was not a rap album, it was an r&b album. Missy Elliott should be number 1 since she’s had more better albums than Lauryn Hill, MC Lyte, and Queen (not that they ain’t good). And you missing Shawnna, and Remy Ma, nobody really gives a rats behind who Rah Digga is, she cannot freestyle worth a damn.

To me what determines who are the best rappers, male or females should be album sells. Another thing, many rappers who makes remixes, often won’t rerelease the singles after a while. To make a good
point. Somebody should do a rare remix album of various songs that got air play. For example,Yo-Yo’s Black Pearl & Don’t Be A Fool.
