The Chronic & Marshall Mathers LP Among Top 200 Albums of All Time

Wednesday March 14, 2007

To remind us that albums are still relevant in this growing age of downloads, the National Association of Record Merchandisers and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame unveiled "The Definitive 200," a list of 200 albums they say every music fan should own. Surprisingly, Eminem's Marshall Mathers LP is the highest ranked rap album at No.28. Nas' Illmatic is placed way down at No. 185. Jay-Z's Reasonable Doubt and Ready to Die are notably absent, but The Black Album (No.161), The Blueprint (No. 128), and Life After Death (No. 59) all made the cut.

Here are the top 10 hip-hop albums mentioned among the Definitive 200: More Hip-Hop Lists & Recommendations:

country grammar 94, but illmatic 185? wow…

Every year there seems to be some “all-time” list that proves that the music industry and mainstream critics as a whole have little to no appreciation of hip-hop. And you can’t say that having the MMLP as the top-ranked rap album isn’t indicative of…umm…”bias”.

yeah that was a white people list. Nelly Country Grammar? What kind of whiteness is that? I think that reggaeton should also be categorized as hip-hop cus us latinos need some props too. but that list was wack.

This list is appaling. You know it’s an uninformed and probably biased list when you’ve got the Beasties but no Public Enemy……………no PE? Get tha fluuuuuck outta here…..

What? Illmatic at 185. MMLP is not the greatest rap album ever? I think I know why Eminem gets special treatment compared to other rappers.

Wack, wack, wack…

They put 2Pac’s 3rd or 4th best album on there, they put 50 Cent on the list, and Nelly :(

36 Chambers not on the list WTF. Of any genre one of the most unique sounding albums ever. From a hip-hop stand point and a music stand point amazingly origional and lyrically correct. Then putting something like Nelly and Will Smith on there and not even mentioning some of hip-hops greatest works is ridiculous.

I don’t know why there are so many negative comments about this list… obviously the list is going to be biast its a list rating music.. something that is completly unique to each listener. I think you guys should be proud of hip-hop making so many entries on an obviously biast list that was not made by a dude that likes hip-hop.. I mean illmatic may be regarded as a top album by hip-hop fans but i know some rock people that would hate it they find nas boring and even tho he is my favorite artist i see there point. but my point is in this rushed and probly grammar lacking entry (sorry nelly no pun intended) post is that nas did make the list i think hip-hop fans should be happy non hip-hop fans are accepting the art.

(15) John says:

umm…its not a white list because a white rapper was rated the best, just as if a black rapper had the highest rated it wouldnt be a black list. and eminem doesnt get special treatment, hes personally my favorite artist and obviously has the support of america since hes sold more than any other rapper besides 2pac. and to someone who isnt feverishly devoted to rap, a lot of the classics would sound boring. im a big fan of rap, but not as much as others, and i also dont like that many of the classic rappers, 2pac, n.w.a, and wu tang are the only ones i like, others such as nas, unless you grew up with them, sound boring.
