Poll Results: Is Hip-Hop Responsible for Violence?

Wednesday January 10, 2007
Al Sharpton and other skeptics argue that there's a correlation between hip-hop and acts of violence--that rap music often glorifies criminality and engenders feuds, sometimes with bloody consequences. So, should hip-hop be held accountable for violence? Nearly 50% of our voters say "No way, Jose."
Here's the complete breakdown of poll results:
  1. No, hip-hop is not responsible for violence - (534) - 47%
  2. Hip-hop contributes to violence a bit - (336) - 29%
  3. Hip-hop and violence go hand in hand - (115) - 10%
  4. Hip-hop is just another word for violence - (64) - 5%
  5. Parents are responsible for hip-hop related violence - (47) - 4%
  6. I don't know - (33) - 2%

Total Votes: 1,129

Although I love hip-hop, and I don’t mind a bit of gangsta rap. It does have a violent influence on some kids (near where I live), but these people don’t have much knowledge on the roots of hip-hop and just see it all as gangsta. My theory – it contributes just a bit.

Its all rediculous… they have nothing to do with each other. Its basically stereotypical because not every hip-hop song talks about violence and drugs. And you cant tell me that youve never heard a country, rock, or any genre music that doesnt also use violence. You cant blame violence on hip-hop or say that it contributes without involving every other genre.

hey hey hey …
Ya i don’t think that music is an influence on teens because teens have their own minds and can decide things for themselves. If music is that big of an influence on teens then why would they listen to it? The rap music can relieve lots of stress and can also help teens have a good time. Rap music normally has a steady beat and can give anyone something to do.

i myself listen to hip-hop and many other styles of music but lets get one thing clear hip-hop music today repeatly talks about haven sex doing or selling drugs or killing think about killing someone or fighting.hearing this does have a mental effect on someone. music can effect a mode of a person no matter who you are.its message that you hear and it stays with you.you my be listen to the beat or dancing but you doing what it says shake you butt pop or stuff…this messages change your state of mind in a little way but when the music is present violence shows up.big or small its there in nite clubs or house parties.along with the music illegal substances may as well be present to. to music and violence go hand in hand no but it isnt far from it

(7) Robin says:

Does it contribute to violence? It might influence it or condone it… however, not the root cause at all. Hip-hop (especially today) does promote stereotypes though and that is something we must deal with.

WOOOOOOOOW.! i cannot beileve all these people think hip hop causes violence. REALLLY? thats a steriotype. cus hip hop && rap is just expressing how the artist feels. the things they talk about explain what they went thru to get to where they are now. people that think all these kidds out here are just doing bad things cus of the songs they listen to needa stop being so STUPiD && pay attention to what the kidds are going thru && how/where they live. its not that they’re influenced by it; its that they can RELATE to it. getitSTRAiGHT.

(16) houston rep says:

hip hop and violence are two different things ,hip-hop is a representation of true talented and high minded people those who can actualy make a living by relating what they been through, how they got away from the situation ,most importantly what they avoided and had to do to get where they at. Been humans jalousy, envy, and bad plan to stop u and this is exactly when violence find his room in the all topic.i will protect what i own by any means necessary because i didn’t worked this hard for u to think that it’s gonna be this easy 4 u to take it from me. so violence find himself in the hip hop world because maybe violence was necessary to warn those who play to much that this is serious and respect my business.KEEP IT REAL WHAT WOULD U DO IF SOMEBODY TRYING TO STEAL YOUR RIDE AND U COULD PREVENT IT BY DOING WHAT U HAD TO DO ? GO AHEAD I WAIT

(17) houston rep says:

i went through the impossible to get what i have seriuosly u think somebody’s lyrics or way of thinking would change my focus specialy if they not built for it ,stop lying to the world all these kids out there understand the consequences of their actions, mind your business, act like u care about yourself, stop talking about people’s business cause at the end it’s come back to u ,if we all do this it will be no more violence just hip hop artists relating how they live and get theirs easy and if u wanna b one do the same . f*** wit it

I think that rap music does cause violence in teens. It makes them feel like that’s the only way they can fit in. The only everyone will like them. Everybody wants to be in a gang now-a-days. No one has respect for no one!!!!! I think its all because of the music they listen to.

(19) myopinion says:

Hip hop is violence and is against GOD>It teaches people to lie-cheat-kill-steal-commit adultry-love satan and all that is fowl and digusting. Hip hop is marketed to the lowest level of a human being’s consciouness. It tells you to hate women to hate black people or people of color. It says to shoot to kill. It teaches people to be the worst that they can be. To give up on GOD and life and live like a fool that will do whatever these rappers tell them to do. If Jay Z put a bone through his nose so would thousands or maybe millions of people would do that. If a rapper work a shirt with one arm missing then you would see fool after fool doing that. It is a simple plan. You speak against authority and tell these listeners to follow your example and then you see these followers killing their parents and beating their kids and women. It’s sad. I am glad I am not a follower of this trash. I believe in GOD and that’s it. I sit back and watch how these followers die year after year because they wanted to be like 50 cent or Lil Wayne and the rest of those horrible people. They do nothing but lie to you and you follow that.
