Hip-Hop Timeline (1925 - 2006)

Saturday January 6, 2007
When we think of hip-hop's humble beginnings, the late 1970's quickly comes to mind. Unknown to many, however, the skeleton of what we now know as hip-hop had been hovering around our neighborhoods decades before the 1979 seminal rap hit, "Rapper's Delight," by the Sugarhill Gang. Fasten your seatbelts and enjoy this time-travel, as we explore the hip-hop timeline from 1925 to 2006.

Peace to all! I’m a 41 year old Hip Hop Hed’ who feels that the culture is definately alive! Regarding our collective health, as all things room to certainly improve. Bit the question is…where are the improvements needed and why?

(15) Tom says:

Well it’s now saying that music that is heavily downloaded is going to be included in the charts, this means ANY song. So even old-skool Elvis songs could be getting into the charts. So this means old-skool Hip-Hop songs could make their way back into the charts. Hopefully getting more people to listen to it and maybe inspire rappers to go back to their roots.

(18) CSC says:

I agree that NWA killed rap. They didn’t do it intentionally, it was more so the influence they had on the younger generation who was watching them when they first came out. The whole gangsta scarface tony montana lifestyle b&@$#%it started w/ them. Although they were just expresssing themselves at the time (and were a great group), there gimmicks and antics are now mimicked by the garbage rappers we see today that are ultimately killing the art.

(24) hollie says:

Its so stupid and ignorant to assume that hip hop is dead because of the rappers of today rapping about cars and money one of the first rap songs ever written was Rappers Delight by the Sugar Hill Gang and it was about braggin about what you got where as nwa and gangsta rap was about rapping about a hard life and what you didnt have. Regular rap is about what you got.

(25) DEREK SIMMONS says:

I AM WHAT YOU MIGHT CALL, THE TRUE ESSENCE OF HIP HOP,I HAVE DONE IT ALL,SEEN IT ALL,HEARD IT ALL,MY HIP HOP ROOTS GO BACK TO 1977,AND I HAVE TO HONESTLY SAY THAT HIP HOP IS NOT DEAD,BUT HIDDEN TEMPORARILY, IT IS UP TO THOSE OF US THAT BELIEVE IN BALANCE TO BRING IT BACK TO THE FOREFRONT.I TOO USED TO SAY THAT N.W.A.KILLED IT,BUT THEY ONLY EXPANDED IT
THE REALITY THAT WE SEE AND HEAR IN THE STREETS ARE ECHOED LOUDLY THROUGH HIP HOP,IT GIVES US THAT FREEDOM OF SPEECH FEELING,WHICH IN TURN CONVERTS REALITY INTO RAP, I AGREE THAT SOME OF THE TRUTHS TOLD ARE NOT THE MOST PLEASANT TO THE EAR,BUT IT CREATES TAT BALANCE THAT WE NEED BACK INTO HIP HOP, THATS WHAT IM FIGHTING FOR(DIVERSITY)DIFFERENT STYLES,CONCEPTS,PHAT BEATS,CREATIVITY,INNOVATION,ETC….THIS IS HIP HOP….HENRY, YOUR NEXT DISCUSSION SHOULD BE: “WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO TO BRING HIP HOP BACKO THE FOREFRONT”.

(26) DJ Clusterfunktion says:

Seriously Gangster Rap was created by white males for white males period… Gangster rap reinforces negative stereotypes white people have against black african americans. White male record executives bought all the smaller independent rap labels and changed the lyrical content to something they can sell to white suburbia. There is nothing of substance or real with any popular rap music .. hip hop died in the early 90’s now all rap is just a bunch of talentless phonies humping the business model of perpetuating the negative image of african americans, we’re just placating to the white listener when we rap about killing each other or degrading women… Anyone that listens to that crap anymore is a phony, a sad pathetic phony… keep it real, rhyme about empowerment thats the true meaning of hip-hop

(28) shaq says:

Hip hop is still alive because of people like jay-z, nas, common, talib, etc. Plenty of people think Wayne is the best, but he is really nothing. All he talks about is money, sex, and drugs. He dosent even have any Grammy awards to prove he is the best, (although an award doesn’t prove you to be the best). I used to think that kanye west was a good hip hop artist until I found out that he has people like rhymefest help him write songs which proves him not hip hop. Jay-z is the best rapper alive.

(30) MIC LOVE says:

“To Da Comment Bout Real Hip-Hop”
I beleive everyone dat NOW in da so called-”RAP” game are putting on a show to get more money, because dat there occupation. None truely have any real beleifs in change, all there eyes see are; NICE CARS, DA LATEST PHONES&RINGTONES, REDICULOUS CLOTHING LINES, JEWELRY, AND COCKY JUDGEMENT OF DA NEXT ARTIST COMING IN TO DA RAP GAME NEXT. Theres no longer peace&love, unless its built wit money. I never see any rapper steppin into any of my city limit cyphers, so dat makes them unworth to place themselves as rappers. Because its only true to da Hip-Hop culture if you show love to da streets where it started. Despite dat, there was a quote once commonly said “People make da world go round”. But in this time the rules have changed it now “MONEY MAKES DA WORLD GO ROUND”.

(32) Brian says:

I dont think any of us can say WHO killed hip hop because i think its way too many things to pinpoint a single person however i have an opinion as to When hip hop died:
In 2002, Krsone got in a little bit of an argument w/ nelly. this happens a lot between hip hop artists and it always eventually fizzles when someone ends up backing down/selling more records/whativer. However, in this situation we have a veteran mc krsone and a phoney who puts out summer hits. Nellville went on to sell like 4 times more albums than krsone. thats WHEN i think hip hop died.

(33) Hip Hop is alive says:

Hip-Hop is not Dead!! I REPEAT HIP-HOP IS NOT DEAD!! think of hip-hop as a mother (which it actually is). the hip-hop of today is a descendant along with rap. hip-hop is probably at its peak if not higher and has gone global. its influenced daily life, its influenced politcs. hip-hop contributed to the election of our President. and even he has said so. HIP-HOP IS NOT DEAD
