10 Best Hip-Hop Albums of 2006

Thursday December 28, 2006
It's that time of the year again. This year, we persuaded some of your favorite hip-hop bloggers to take a break from hawking blogads and help us select the year's best ten albums. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the Top 10 Hip-Hop Albums of 2006, as decided upon by 12 respected hip-hop bloggers. (Nas' Hip-Hop Is Dead and other late 06 releases didn't make the list because we only considered albums that dropped between November 2005 and November 2006.)

No Blue Carpet Treatment on anyone’s list? Once again anti-West Coast bias rears its ugly head. :(

^Calm down. lol

(4) S'real says:

I thought that if tracks 11-19 were taken out of Tha Blue Carpet Treatment, it would definitely be up there with the best. Sadly, they weren’t and listeners were treated to a good 25 minutes of filler.

(5) Joey says:

Yeah, damn that anti-West Coast bias. The Game’s on there; the Coup is on there; Murs was nominated–that’s so biased.

Seriously, I count 3 from NY; 2 from the West Coast; 2 from Chicago; and 1 each from Philly, Atlanta, and Virginia. I’d say that’s pretty good regional diversity.

(6) Henry says:

^Real talk, Joey.

I liked Tha Blue Carpet Treatment, but there were too many songs I could do without on that album. Nero even said that in his review: http://rap.about.com/od/reviews/fr/SnoopBlueCarpet.htm

(7) Nero says:

I was only joking about the anti-West Coast bias thing – sorta. But the fact that K-Fed’s debut release didn’t make anybody’s top 10 list is a gosh damn crime. :)

(8) Henry says:

^Haha, I knew you were joking. Digged your R&B version of the list by the way.

(9) DLev1128 says:

Once Hip Hop Is Dead drops, people are gonna have to start revising their lists.

Finally someone said it. Dec.19th is still this year people!Should of held the poll off a couple more weeks.

December 17, 2006 at 6:23 pm
(11) caps says:

Its not a poll but you know.My brains fried after listening to blunt ashes too many times. It took me more than a couple rewinds to get everything he was saying.

December 18, 2006 at 3:33 am
(14) k says:

yeaaa a piece of strange should be there somewhere

December 18, 2006 at 9:12 am
(15) Henry says:

@No.12: Did you even read the list? Food & Liquor is No.3.

Yeah, I voted for A Piece of Strange, but one vote wasn’t enough to get it in the top 10.

(16) Big Fish says:

Busta Rhymes had the MOST slept on album of 2006… I challenge anyone who says different.

December 18, 2006 at 12:07 pm
(17) dvnb says:

yeah, too early for this list, Nas’s “HHIS” should EASILY be on this, and how does Busta’s album not make ANY of your lists?!?! dude easily had one of the best albums of the year, career-saving if you ask me.

December 18, 2006 at 3:05 pm
(18) Henry says:

Too early for the list? So, we’re all supposed to stand still for Captain Nas to drop his album, then make our lists? Wow.

December 18, 2006 at 4:53 pm
(19) Reecie says:

Can’t be serious…no, Nas- “Hip Hop is Dead”? Sorry but if that album isn’t on the list, then it has no credibility!

“Too early for the list? So, we’re all supposed to stand still for Captain Nas to drop his album, then make our lists? Wow”

It’s not about standing still for Captain Nas, it’s about making including all of the albums of the year and picking the “10 Best Hip Hop Albums of 2006″ out of those. Otherwise your list is really just the best albums from January through December 18th, 2006. lol

December 18, 2006 at 6:31 pm
(20) Slim says:

yo, whoever has Diddy on that top 10 list, the rest of your pics arent credible after that. “Press Play” #2?? are you serious?

December 19, 2006 at 5:16 am
(21) k says:

reecie has a point

December 21, 2006 at 9:25 am
(22) b-mac says:

I bought “hip hop is dead” yesterday. The album would be good if Nas didnt say anything. The rap is crap, the beats are hot, and I’ll take Jeezy’s new one over that garbage any day.

December 21, 2006 at 10:04 pm
(23) Alex says:

Its official, this b-mac guy has lost all credibility as a rap fan.

December 22, 2006 at 12:49 am
(24) k says:

lol at b-mac

Henry i reckon you ought to change your list for Captain Nas now lol.

Anyway, my top 3 for 06 would be:
Hip hop is dead
Food and Liquor
A piece of strange

December 23, 2006 at 9:28 pm
(25) Pribs says:

Why in the hell is Jay-Z’s album on there? I can name 10 albums that are more than worthy to take its place…
Meth- 4:21 the day after
Ghost- More Fish
Nas- Hip Hop is dead
AOTP- Torure Papers
Jedi Mind Tricks-Servents in Heaven, Kings in Hell
Snoop – Blue Carpet Treatment
Ok thats 6 but still quality albums that are well beyond Jay’s album

December 23, 2006 at 9:35 pm
(26) Pribs says:

Big Fish I’ll take you up on that challenge. Method Man’s album is alot more slept on than Busta’s. Busta’s album atleast went gold and had atleast a single and vid. Mef got nothing. And his album brings alot of heat, enough to rival Tical 2000. But still 421 is no Tical.

January 2, 2007 at 6:58 pm
(27) Von says:

Jay deserves to be on there.
He also executive produced the best album of the year. Food and Liquor
and he put out Fishhcale

I can’t beieve Lil Boosie didnt make the list I know yall zoomin! LOL

January 3, 2007 at 1:29 pm
(28) Shaz says:

Jays album was way below par..Nas’s album is great, and Game did a class job without the Doc and the rest of Aftermath excluding Busta etc..But Snoops album has some off the hook songs, but alot of sh## ones too..

January 4, 2007 at 5:32 pm
(29) johnny says:
