Poll Results: Does Piracy Hurt Record Sales?

Saturday November 25, 2006
I don't know if I'm supposed to be surprised that most people view music piracy as a promotional vehicle for artists. Our recent poll shows that more than half of the people don't see anything wrong with the bootleg industry. See the results for yourself: Does piracy hurt record sales?
  • Yes, it's responsible for poor record sales (202) - 36%
  • No, it's promotion for the artists (311) 56%
  • I'm not sure (38) - 6%
Total Votes: 551

Though piracy is only partly responsible for low record sales, there's no arguing the fact that file-sharing robs labels of millions, if not billions, of dollars every year. Sure, some CDs are so insulting that they're not worth spending your hard earned money on, but certain artists still invest blood, sweat, and tears in their music. Those artists definitely deserve the consumer's support. Instead of substituting CD purchases with bootlegs, you should assess the quality of music by sampling a few songs. If you like, you buy. But if you must download, just keep in mind that you're depriving someone of the luxury of owning two swimming pools and a Maybach Exelero.

I have a long list, but let me pose the question to you: What CDs are so weak that they don't deserve your money?

The latest albums I was disappointed with and did not buy, Ice Cube, Busta Rhymes, Lloyd Banks, Rick Ross, Chingy, Ludacris, The Killers and Prince.

FYI; the albums I did buy recently; Akon, Snoop Dog, The Game and am probably buying eminem Presents and Nas’ latest. I’m on the fence with Jays most recent.

What up check Im an umpcoming artist and I believe that there are always gonna b people who by ur albums and those who..just want one or two song from ur albulm cuz they think its not worth buyin. There are alot of wack a** rappers out there that are signed that have aight songs on there albulms and fu***n bangin ass radio hits..but thats like one or two songs..I wouldnt waste my money..give me an albulm that have more than half of the songs that are hot on it..and yeah its worth buyin..but im sayin there are many many people out there in the world what effect can it really have on sales..no matter what ur always gonna make some profit..

The whole problem with the record industry is they keep you on the line we all know as consumers that the weak albums that are put out aren’t worth buying. They manipulate the albums so there is only 1-3 hot tracks you want and keep you coming back for more.So to me it’s simple stop putting out wack albums and make them more like the artist 1st album and people will buy keep making wack records and you’ll be broke.

Its not bad in anyway because RECORD SALES are only a fraction of where an artists money come from.

BEING FAMOUS is where they get rich. Advertisments, promotions, etc. 50 cent is worth MILLIONS MORE $ now that he’s teamed up with vitamin Water

Piracy only hurts record labels.
