2006 BET Hip-Hop Awards Live Recap

Wednesday November 15, 2006

8:01 -The show kicks off with a remix performance of Jermaine Dupri's hit "Welcome to Atlanta" featuring Ludacris, Young Jeezy, and (surprise!) Lil Jon.

8:06 - Comedian Katt Williams jumpstarts hosting duties with a state of the union address. For someone who just got out of jail, he looks refreshed.

8:10 - Diddy, first presenter of the night, pays tribute to "two of our heroes": Gerald Levert and Ed Bradley. This must be the first time Diddy isn't all dressed-up for an event.

8:12 - T.I. wins "Hip-Hop Video of the Year" for "What You Know."

8:19 - Styles P, Papoose, and Lupe Fiasco just wasted 40 bars on cement. God forbid they all make an album together. Dictionaries will fly off the shelf.

8:22 - Lil' Wayne and Baby perform their smash single "Stuntin' Like My Daddy." No, they didn't kiss again.

8:25 - Monica is here to present the Element Award: Producer of the Year. Busta is here to admire Monica's body and shout out Swizz Beatz.

8:28 - Jermaine Dupri grabs the 'Producer of the Year' award. Kanye kicks his television.

8:32 - Rick Ross huffs and puffs his way through a sleep-inducing performance of "Push It" and "Hustlin'".

8:34 - Rick Ross--en route to presenting Jay-Z with "Hustler of the Year" award--picks up an award for "worst presenter of the night".

8:35 - Jay-Z accepts what's really an honoree award masqueraded as a category-based award. "Men lie. Women lie. But numbers don't."<--Hov's best attempt at a slick acceptance speech/subliminal at Jim Jones.

8:41 - Snoop Dogg performs "That That Sh--," the second single from Tha Blue Carpet Treatment.

8:45 - Chamillionaire wins "Rookie of the Year" award.

8:51 - Young Jeezy and Ludacris manage to pump life back into the show with a thunderous performance of "Grew Up a Screw Up."

8:56 - The Cypha returns with Rhymefest, Saigon, Sway, and Remy Ma, with DJ Scratch on the 1's and 2's. Remy Ma hauls a thin-veiled insult at Fat Joe: "No more TS, I impeached the President."

9:00 - I remember seeing Game's performance of "One Blood" in Atlanta and thinking: they'll probably edit out the part where he forgets his lyrics. Thankfully, I was wrong. He also alters the first two lines of verse 2 to accomodate a Jay-Z shoutout: "I ain't got beef with 50/ Peace to Jay" while pointing in Hov's direction. The look on Jay's face says "Who cares?"

9:06 - Chamillionaire wins 'Alltell People's Champ Award' and declares BET his favorite channel of all time. Paul Wall spills his sizzurp.

9:11 - Flavor Flav and Deelishis try so hard to make their relationship seem real, as they present the "Move the Crowd Award". Naturally, Busta wins. Busta rebukes emcees who only rock back and forth and grab their crotch while on stage.

9:14 - I almost forgot that Katt Williams was hosting the awards, no thanks to Lil Jon.

9:17 - Rappers have this annoying habit of creating two personalities to go along with their already-fictionalized persona, and T.I. (or is it T.I.P.) is no exception. After battling his alter-ego in the dressing room to decide what song to perform, T.I. settles for "Top Back" featuring his weed-carrier, Young Dro.

9:26 - Young Jeezy converts the stage into a strip club while performsing "I Luv It." Problem is, the strippers are dancing to a different beat.

9:30 - Common takes "Lyricist of the Year" award ahead of Lil Wayne, Lupe Fiasco, T.I., and Busta Rhymes. Something tells me Com didn't expect to win, hence his absence. Nelly accepts the award on his behalf.

9:35 Whoever penciled in Jim Jones and Juelz Santana for a rendition of "We Fly High (Ballin')" in the presence of Front-Row Hov has probably entered Jay's black list. Katt Williams, also signed to Diplomats, adds salt to injury: "I know some people don't like Dipset, but what are you going to do?"

9:38 DJ Grandmaster Flash is honored with the "I Am Hip-Hop" icon award and sets a new record for "longest hip-hop award acceptance speech" (5 minutes).

9:54 T.I. picks up his third for the night, "MVP of the Year," and shouts out fellow trapstars, as his hat hangs on to dear life.

9:58 - Katt Williams echoes my thoughts: "An award show where nobody got punched."

Fin!

(8) Blkpoppie_187 says:

first of all any 1st annual award show dealing with hip hop owes it to NY to do the first show there. I understand the south is putting out good music, but the majority of it is coming out of Def Jam and Bad Boy…….ummm run by NY cats Jay Z and Diddy……..As usual with BET the sound system was crappy. All in All ok

(12) Renee says:

Loved Kat’s state of the union, loved Jay’s acceptance speech, and absolutely loved T.I.’s performance (please stop hating!)Glad to see Common finally get some respect and an award show not afraid of Kanye.

Other than that it was BORING! How did Chamillionare get rookie of the year on a HIP HOP award show over Lupe Fiasco? Chamillionare looked like he was going to cry as he gave his speech. That was crazy!
