Poll Results: And the 'King of the West' Title Goes to...

Sunday October 1, 2006
In what was indeed a fiercely contested race, Compton wordsmith The Game emerged as the winner of our 'King of the West Coast' poll. Can't say I'm delighted that my nominee, Andre Young, was narrowly edged out by his advocate. But, hey, it's your call. Take a look at the breakdown:
  • The Game (358) 22%
  • Dr. Dre (348) 21%
  • Snoop Dogg (326) 20%
  • Xzibit (240) 14%
  • Too Short (89) 5%
  • Ras Kass (71) 4%
  • Ice Cube (1) 1%
  • Other (186) 11%
Total Votes: 1618

Lol i thinking about voting other for 2Pac given what his post-death albums keep selling, I think I’ll give it to Game even though Ras Kass is the best out of the West imo.

To me snoop dogg is da king of da west.he’s been in da game for a long time and i dnt see him slowing down,Though Dre is good too but snoop is da best.Big up big Snoop Dogg u r da king.wes wes yo!

I’d probably saw Snoop.

(4) Alex says:

Well to start off let me eliminate some people. First off Snoop and Dre are much more east coast now, so they cant be kings of the west. Second, Too Shorts album sales eliminate him, you cant be the leader of the west when your album sales dont hit triple figures wit ease. Plus Ras Kass who imo is great, does not have enough notireity to put him to the top. So my pick is, The Game. Simple when you think west you think Game, simple stuff.

(5) Illmatic620 says:

Yeah I agree with Alex, even though i think Snoop still reps the west hard and I really liked Vato, Game isnt that ALL of a compelling MC, but whatever neither was 2Pac/

(6) Henry says:

Good to see Dre finally catching up with Game.

(7) Henry says:

And Game takes the lead again. This is really shaping up to be an interesting contest between the doctor and his advocate.

(8) Nero says:

To quote Dr. Dre: “Niggas try to be the king, but the ace is back.”

(9) sue says:

I just commented on the wrong post – but I wanted to add that it’s good to see Dre taking the crown here. He’s got the staying power and the illest beats.

(10) The Chosen One says:

I know Ras Kass will not win the poll for king of the west because of album sales but hands down Ras Kass is a true mc and will crush any rapper on this list but only real hip hop listeners will agree.

September 26, 2006 at 5:12 pm
(11) Illmatic620 says:

Yeah but he cant put together a good album, and he did a terrible job “crushin the game”.. Reassisnation was good and that had top notch production and great appearances, but the documentary was better then that..

September 26, 2006 at 7:21 pm
(12) Alex says:

I think if were talking best rapper on the west, ras kass fits in that picture along with Crooked I, Immortal Technique, and other guys like that. But to be the KING of the west, then I think you have to have that attitude too, you also have to sell at least platinum every time your album drops. hard to be the king of a region w/o any followers.

September 26, 2006 at 8:35 pm
(13) Henry says:

“…hard to be the king of a region w/o any followers.”

So you with me on Dre then?

September 26, 2006 at 9:17 pm
(14) The Chosen One says:

Soul On Ice was Ras Kass best album, Rasassination was terrible because beats were jiggy as hell and lyrically shallow in comparison to his firs album.

September 26, 2006 at 11:12 pm
(15) k says:

it’s probably Dre for me. I’m not snoop’s greatest fan and Game will be up there only if his next album is quality.

September 27, 2006 at 2:09 am
(16) Henry says:

I agree with K, Game still has a lot to prove. It’s too soon to judge him on consistency.

September 27, 2006 at 3:30 pm
(17) Alex says:

“So you with me on Dre then?”

Yeah, either him or the Game, those guys are the only ones right now that could really anchor the west. Im leanin towards Game though because Dre really has been more east coast the last few years.

That’s 1 vote for Ice Cube.

September 28, 2006 at 10:57 pm
(21) k says:

lol 1 vote for ice cube

well, tupac WAS the king of the west 10 or so years back.

September 30, 2006 at 12:55 pm
(22) blast says:

i think we shud all give it up for Dr.Dre,that guy’s beats are just too dope.he’s been behind almost all west coasts successful hiphop artists

October 1, 2006 at 10:37 am
(23) Mac T says:

It would be stupid to consider anyone else but DRE. He has helped pretty much every artist on that list become what they are. people forget about dre cause he so focused on doing just that. There would be no game, snoop, xzibit or ice cube without Dre.

October 1, 2006 at 10:42 am
(24) Henry says:

I agree with you. Dre really is the King of the left coast, closely followed by Snoop. In my opinion, of course.

R u all gay? 2pac has sold more records after his death than any other “king of the west” n if it aint pac then it’s cube u stupid idiots

(28) M.I.G (realest nigga) says:

2pac was making sick beats b4 the game was born n so was ice cube

October 1, 2006 at 3:13 pm
(29) Illmatic620 says:

Who was a member of the greatest rap group(N.W.A) ice cube

….or how about Dre…

Ice Cube isnt that relevant anymore, he dropped some classic items, but if you want to make it that way, then Easy-E is the king of the West cause he made Ice-Cube.. Ice cube wrote a lot of the lyrics but the concepts and the mic presence was all Easy-E.

The Game has more influence and reps the west more then Dre.. Dre is hangin out with Gunit out on the east too much, no one reps the left like Game

October 1, 2006 at 3:15 pm
(30) Illmatic620 says:

Immortal Technique is 100 Percent NY btw, ditto for Chino XL… Ras Kass is the best in the west, in terms of lyrical skills but Game puts out quality music

October 19, 2006 at 5:38 am
(31) peter says:

where is tupac in this list

December 11, 2006 at 7:20 pm
(32) Sharece says:

ummm okay i know 2pac is not from the westcoast, but he repped it and i think he made it BIG in the 90’s so my vote would go for him, i mean look at what happen to the westcoast after he died, that’s proof right there. If Not Tupac i would say Ice Cube is the King and Snoop is the Prince. The Game may be the face of LA right now but when comparing him to snoop or cube, there’s no comparison.

And the King of the West is…

1. Snoop Dogg-the king of the West Coast ever that ruled the gangsta rap world in music

2. P. Doggy-the king of West Coast music alongside Kato still smokin’

3. Lil’ Kato-the king of the West Coast because the people liked him, he finally runs the city and became the king of L.A.

4. The Game-West Coast top rookie that never blew up in the rap world

5. Ice Cube-West Coast legend had finally became bigger and still be the king of rap

Keep it West Coastin’! Up In Smoke!!

(41) Tony says:

wow it really is sad how clueless people are these days. Its not even worth a poll.. fact Eazy-E is the king of the west. They dont call him the godfather of gangsta rap for know reason. Where did 2pac and Snoop Dogg come from? DeathRow, where did DeathRow Come from? Dr. Dre, where did Dr. Dre come from? Ruthless Records and NWA. Where did Ruthless and NWA come from? Eazy-E. Its hilarious that the likes of Xzibit and Game are there!
