Gnarls Barkley, Chamillionaire, and Missy Elliott Win Big at the VMAs
Underdogs ruled at this year's Video Music Awards. Chamillionaire was clearly surprised to have won the Moonman for "Best Rap Video"--a category that includes 50 Cent, Busta Rhymes, and T.I.
But, nothing turned out to be more puzzliing than Snoop Dogg's apparent refusal to step on stage with the Pussycat Dolls after they were named "Best Dance Video" for their Snoop-assisted clip, "Buttons." Big Snoop Dogg was probably mindful of losing some street cred, as he sat still and shook his head as if he couldn't recall ever dropping a verse on that song.
T.I. proudly performed his No. 1 hit, "What You Know," backed by his shoulder-leaning protégé Young Dro and a bunch of kids.
A bling-ed out Pharrell and a new-look Ludacris performed the club anthem, "Money Maker," taken from Luda's forthcoming Release Therapy.
As expected, Kanye West veered off the teleprompter, but managed to give a decent presentation of the Video Vanguard Award to Hype Williams. Hype's award came with a recap of his most popular videos (Jay-Z's "Big Pimpin'," Biggie's "Mo' Money, Mo' Problems," Nas' "Hate Me Now," and 2Pac's "California Love") as well as two mini-performances by Busta Rhymes and Missy Elliot.
