Spotlight: Lady Sovereign

Saturday July 29, 2006

If music is a universal language, then British import Lady Sovereign speaks it with a hip-hop accent. Lady Sov (born Louise Amanda Harman) grew up in Chalkhill Estates--one of North London’s grittiest housing developments. She later dropped school and picked up odd jobs to support a rising passion for hip-hop and grime. Sov went on to hone her mic skills via underground rap battles in London clubs. But, it was her aggressive self-promotion (mainly on a pre-MySpace site known as Facepix.com) that garnered her an internet following. The subsequent buzz earned S-O-V an audition and a deal with the go-to hip-hop major, Def Jam Recordings.

Lady Sovereign--whose choice of bling is her house keys--will attempt to unlock the U.S. rap market when her Jay-Z-helmed debut Public Warning hits stores on October 3rd, 2006. Until then, peep the fast-tongued rapper's first single, "Love Me or Hate Me," for a taste of Warning. Don't forget to tell us if you love or hate her in the comment section.

Don’t worry Henry, your job is more valuable then my banter :P … seriously though very few of these gimmick rappers, like a white female from the UK turn out to be any good, then again Jin was an exception I feel a lot of his stuff

meh it feels like a party track. i find it sad because her lyrics are pretty good but obviously u wont pay attention when your dancing. cuz her lyrical jokes is better than average but i bet u the chorus will get freakin annoying after a while. for a single id disregard this. she has to do better if she wants cred. n her other songs shouldnt warp her voice

Hate to admit it, but I’m really feelin’ this song. It’s catchy in an annoying way, but catchy nonetheless.

She’s f**king brilliant. This little girl can spit hot sh*t at the best of them, and she’s got the energy to move a crowd. Her shows are exciting as hell.

I can’t wait for a full length album, I’m getting sick of the same old songs remixed a million ways.

(9) Zero says:

Her track on the Chocolate Swim EP is much better.

I also realized that I hate “hi this is who i am” tracks by new rappers.

The jury is still out on Sov IMO, but I listened to her Vertically Challenged EP and it’s fire. She’ll do well if she gets god produciton.

I really like “Love me or Hate me” but I agree with Zero; rappers do need to stop the my-life-was-hard-so-feel-sorry-for-me act. I think we can all relate to Eminem in this sense. haha
