Method Man Calls Out Jay-Z (Video)

Thursday June 29, 2006
Sure, Def Jam has been the go-to hip-hop label for decades. But, there's no debating the fact that they have more rappers sitting on the bench than America's national soccer team. Method Man's album, 4:21, is slated for August 22nd, but we know how that goes. According to amazon.com, Joe Budden's long overdue sophomore LP, The Growth, has been pushed back to 2010, a clear typo that might just translate into reality. And, don't get me started on Redman's Red Gone Wild.

Method Man addressed some issues with the L.A. Reid and Jay-Z-led Def Jam imprint in a recent video interview with The Breakdown TV. Here are some highlights from the interview:
"Whatever happened to artist development? They'll take a Ne-Yo, they'll take a Rihanna and develop them. They don't do that with us rappers. You know why? They look at us as fast food."

"I don't have anything against The Roots or Nas. But, there's a lot of hungry m****f****s out there that deserve those slots. The Roots had a deal, Nas had a deal and still has a deal. Jay, stop sitting in that office, b. Go out there and find those talents. N***as is mad at you, b. Stop signing all these established acts...(Source: The Breakdown TV)
With all due respect to Meth, what stops him and the rest of the Clan from dishing out record deals to up and comers if they really care about artist development? Def Jam might have mishandled some of their artists promotion-wise, and Jay-Z is definitely not the most proficient label executive on the planet. However, his ascent from the streets to the corporate office was an end product of relentless hardwork and dedication. So, don't knock his hustle. If anything, many hip-hop enthusiasts would actually like to see the likes of Ghostface Killah, Nas, and The Roots get as much push as their r&b/pop counterparts Ne-Yo and Rihanna. Besides, as you can tell from my recent interview with ?uestlove, The Roots weren't comfortable with their deal, which was as bad as not having a deal.

Meth is right about not giving up coming artist a chance. Everyone that is big now got a break from some one. There should be some place new talent can go to get there music heard by people that can get them signed if they are good. Why do most of us as black people hate to help each other. There is enough out there for everyone.
Thank You

What did I just write over at The Rap Up? Artists cannot possibly enjoy seeing CEO Carter outshine them when he is in control of their careers.

I understand where Meth is coming from–I wouldn’t be happy to see people’s projects sitting on the backburner while the man who could be pushing these releases is out touring the whole world and doing songs with Beyonce. But it sounds like he’s hating on the artists who’re getting put out: The Roots, Nas, Ne-Yo,etc

As far as Mr. Hova, I wonder if his contract allows for him to go about promoting his own stuff. But I’m sure Def Jam won’t mind since they’ll still make money off his tours.
