Eminem's personal woes have made him a headline staple lately. The Detroit MC recently returned to court for divorce proceedings with wife, Kimberley Mathers, in a private session. Em was also reportedly using antidepressants to help him get through the agonizing loss of best friend and D12 member Proof. On a bright note, the Grammy-winning rapper has been selected to play a bounty hunter in a remake of 1950's TV western "Have Gun Will Travel." However, it was his lyrical prowess that made the world take notice in the first place. “Criminal” and “Lose Yourself” would get honorable mentions. But none of Em’s singles-”Without Me” inclusive-ranks in his top 10 best recordings…in my opinion.
Renegade and Lose Your Self should be up there.. especially Renegade I know it was Hov’s song but damn that white boy killed it

Decent analysis of some of these jams, but you missed the mark homie. In 50 years the Eminem song they’ll still be playin is lose yourself. Here’s my list:
1) Lose Yourself – autobiographical, musically suspensful like a boxing soundtrack – universal message of fighting to succeed captured through the urban folk hero that is the struggling emcee.
2) Stan – Gotta agree with you on this one – The lyrics are not only poignant but responsible. Eminem shows genius by staying hardcore while reminding his fans that its only music “I say that sh*t just clownin’ dawg – how f….d up is you?”
3) The way I am – (again you hit it on this one) – This jam is crazy emotional and eminem expresses his frustration with the industry’s “cocky caucasians”, politicians, haters, and the pressure to make a better jam than “Hi my name is…”
4) Hi, my name is – It seems almost silly compared to some of his catalogue, but this jam blew him up, and showed the world that he was coming from an intellegent pop culture saavy perspective – his multis are sick in this jam too. He makes allusions to white and black celeb culture mentioning Nine Inch Nails, Primus, and the Spice Girls. This zany track also set him up for his future zany videos.
5) Cleanin out my closet – Eminem bleeds his heart out all over this track and stays hard yet human. hook is crazy.
6) “I Remember” – I put these together because they are both part of a historic moment in hip hop. A battle between the only two white rappers that were taken seriously. I remember was released on the B-Side of D-12’s Shit On You Single. In this song Em hits far below the belt with comments on low-points in Everlast’s career, his age, and even his heart troubles. He sings it in Whitey Ford’s style to diss everlast further.
7) “White America” – Eminem continues to scare the middle American middle class. He also acknowledges the debt he owes to black artists and how he sells more due to his colour. His flows are sick!
9) Kill you – This song establishes that Eminem doesn’t care about taboos, or boundaries when he’s mad. He gets it off his chest in a song rather than acting on it. He makes a song threatening to kill the mother of his children. Balls.
10) “Mosh” – This track is subversive and anti bush. He connects with a whole other demographic successfully. The animated video is also crazy.

Clearly some of you people have not listened to all of Em’s stuff. His older stuff kills some of his newer stuff lyrially wise. As for best rhyme, “windows tinted on my ride when I drive in it…fire a shot at the private eye hired to pry in my business” from Criminal.
I’m an older man, 53 to be exact, so I don’t exactly get most rap and hip hop, bit past my time and prime. I didn’t really like Mr. Mathers when I first saw him at the emmy’s doing that “Slim Shady” routine and grabbing his crotch all the while. BUT I gotta tell you, the first time, (not so long ago), that I heard “Cleaning Out My Closet”, well, first I almost karked my drawers, then I became an instant fan. Dispite the language (which I don’t think is necessary) that is one powerful song. I have to give him credit for releasing something so personal and yet so profound.
The best of Eminem is Lose yourself, Shake that, Superman.

In my opinion, Eminem is the greatest rapper of all time, but doesn’t get the respect he deserves because he’s dropped songs like Ass Like That, and is probably best known for his jokey singles (which I think, serve their purpose well, but shouldn’t be the focal point of his catalogue).

Lose Yourself was Eminem’s biggest song in his career. Kill You also was one of his best lyrically. Kim, while not a typical song, should be on the list considering it helped garner him attention and fame, plus it was a unique track. Did you leave out those songs because of they were too explicit?
