Spotlight: Sa-Ra Creative Partners

Wednesday June 14, 2006
About two months ago, I was busy relishing one of my favorite days as a hip-hop fan, listening to music and sculpting a potential album review. A friend suddenly distracted me with an AOL instant message. "Yo Henry, you've got to check out Sa-Ra," he demanded. I had never heard of this three-man crew prior to that, but, I'm glad I made the decision to start paying attention to their music.

Shafiq Husayn, Taz Arnold, and Om'Mas Keith, collectively known as Sa-Ra (pronounced sah-ra) are the latest addition to Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music label. Their music is a complex mesh of electro-funk and hip-hop sprinkled with visceral neo-soul sonics. Co-signed by Erykah Badu and Dr. Dre, and dubbed the new Native Tongues by ?uestlove in a recent About.com interview, Sa-Ra is definitely a breath of fresh air. The trio's Second Time Around Double Vinyl 12" is in stores to hold fans over until their debut, Set-Ups & Justifications, hits shelves.

I saw Sa-Ra in concert and have heard a mixtape and am still on the fence. I am told that this is supposed to be some innovative isht, but so far, it hasn’t taken with me. Can’t wait for the studio album, though, so I can start to figure them out.
