Don't Tread on This: Hip-Hop Meets U.S. Soccer
Tuesday June 13, 2006
While watching the U.S. Soccer team take a 3-0 thrashing from their Czech Republic counterparts yesterday, Clint Dempsey and Big Hawk's "Don't Tread" quickly came to mind. Last November, U.S. midfielder Clint Dempsey hooked up with now deceased Houston rapper Big Hawk for their Nike-sponsored World Cup anthem, "Don't Tread."
It all started when Nike offered 23-year old Dempsey (also known as Deuce) a deal to write and record a rap song designed to pump up the U.S. national team during the 2006 world cup. Dempsey, a Nacogdoches native, wanted to give the song a 'Screwston' flavor, and decided to bring Screwed Up Click member Big Hawk for the ride. But, Hawk didn’t just tag along, he nearly stole the show with braggart rhymes like: “The grind’s in me, so please don’t tread on this. This is soccer mixed with a screwed up twist.”
Head on over to Clint Dempsey's page on MySpace to check out the audio, video, and lyrics for "Don't Tread."
