In the next couple of weeks, I'll unveil a list of the 50 truly greatest people to ever breathe on a microphone. (If the NBA playoff series doesn't distract me well enough, that is). But, before that, I want you to give me your own top 10 greatest MC's in order of greatness. Your picks will be instrumental to the final Top 50. Here's your chance to have a say on the final selections as opposed to shooting off 200 e-mails demanding an explanation on why rapper X didn't make the cut. No pun intended. In fact, both X's will be on the list, but, you get my drift. Anyway, feel free to add on to the "Top 10 MC's" thread in the forum. The poll will end on May 22nd, 2006. So, jump right in!

This is my list of the greatest rappers of all time. I will put down their name and the reason why they deserve thi spot. I know you might not agree with me or you might agree with me. It’s my opinion deal with it.
10)Jay-Z- The reason he is on this list, is his influance on other rappers and being a good Lyricist. The reason why he is so low is because he bites other rappers. Even before I heard Swagger Jacker I knew he was jacking too many lines.
9)Big L- The most underrated rapper in history, more than likely because of his death at age 24. But Big L’s punchlines are crazy he is the best rapper at punchlines. I see alot of him in Cassidy and Papoose.
8)Big Pun- This fool’s flow is scary, the way he would put about 8 rhymes in one bar is good. He could rap fast for his size as well.
7)KRS One- Teach on teacher, he’ll slay MC’s from left to right with his lyrics. KRS One killed Nelly years after he’s been out and the man made “The Bridge Is Over”. And people in Oueenbridge still were bumping it.
6)Chuck D- I think all black people would put him in their list of greatest rappers. We needed a rapper like this to wake some people up, he had a good voice too. Chuck D made Flava Flay by the way.
5)Rakim- Like my brother said he even looks like he be a legend. His flow has been copied so many times. Even though he came out years ago, Rakim was serious and aint no Joke. Come on it’s Rakim.
4)Eminem- Yeah he’s white but his lyrics sound like a black man wrote them. I’m just playing Eminem’s style is so unique and different. It’s messed up cuz if Eminem was black he be higher on alot of list.
3)Nas- One Mic, in the booth made illmatic a classic. Nas is still as good as he started, not album wise. Lyric wise he still basically has it. Not very mainstream but still can be notice in both worlds.
2)The Notorious B.I.G.- He’s on everybody list, alot of rappers bite his rhymes, he is the best at flow the way he stretched his words to fall with the beat has never been done. He would be number one on my list but over all this next rapper is better.
1)2pac- You know what time it is. You know who was going to be number one. He has the best voice, song choice, delivery, if he was a lyricist like the others he be even more dangerous.
That’s my list I know I had alot to say. Common, Mos Def, and Kanye West were close. And NWA & RUN DMC are groupes. Suge HillGang, GrandMaster Flash are good but not like these rappers.
2pac maybe a rapper but NEVER a mc. I think some of you guys dont know real hip hop.
Having him a head of the likes of KRS 1, Chuck D, Eminem, Nas, Jay Z, Rakim, Biggie, Slick Rick, Busta Rhymes, Twista, Kanye West and even Lupe Fiasco is a joke.
2pac is a great entertainer and can write good rhymes but thats it.

I am going to name a few groups that haven’t mentioned in the previous 123 entries. Everyone should listen to THE ARSONISTS, BINARY STAR and the HIEROGLYPHICS crew. If you pay attention to all of the elements that make a good mc, most of these rappers have it. Rakim (#1 simply because b4 him there wus no such thing as intense lyricism or complexity in rhymes… apart from dat, he has an obvious influence on sum of da most revered lyricists in Hip-Hop… Common, Talib Kweli and mostly notably Nas… ask any1 of these rhymeslingers and they’ll b da 1st 2 tell u who’s da G.O.A.T., any list when speakin of da greatest shud always hav him at da top or it is just invalid…)
2. Nas (witout a doubt da best of his generation, 94-present day… took Rakim’s flow and used it as a means 2 spread sum sociopolitical commentary… besides being da mastermind behind da greatest hip-hop album of all time and wut i believe 2 b da best catalog of albums, he is also a frontrunner 4 greatest lyricist of all time rivaled only by his major influence… and unquestionable versatility… personal fav)
2. KRS-1 (just as deservant of da #2 spot as any1… which is why it wus so damn hard 2 pick just 1… 1 of da foundin fathers of hip-hop and always used it as a means 2 educate da community… or at least after da death of his friend…)
4. Big Daddy Kane (started da whole playa persona dat would b adopted by countless others… B.I.G., Jigga, Snoop just 2 name a few… ask any Jay-Z fan about Kane… they probably wont know him… overall an intense wordsmith wit loads of swagger…)

I think i shud now take this time 2 address da less informed… 2pac is a good rapper and all but his lyrics r not nearly as profound as these cats’ r and at times shallow… his flow sounded strenious, whereas Rakim, Nas, Kane, BIG etc. wus smooth throughout… da only reason he ever gets metioned amongst da greats is because he was very influential 2 many MC’s, none dat really stands out, and wut does it mean 2 b da realest? does it mean 2 talk about DA STRUGGLES? in case u hav yet 2 realize these cats all had sumthin important 2 say… i think u all just get caught up in da message he’s tryin 2 spread as opposed 2 his ability and effectiveness… maybe it’s because he’s so simplistic and easy 2 listen 2 dat has got u 2 thinkin dat Hip-Hop is about being conscious when it’s only a subgenre… wut about da 4 elements? i know MC’s r supposed 2 rap wut they see, but he wusnt particulary good at it… i dont know if any of his rhymes or verses ever blew my mind… i bet if he aint die so soon no1 wud consider him da best… and oh yeah all eyez on me is da most overrated album ever no1 even talks about da good songs on it, da lyrics remain shallow throughout… how do u want it is beyond gay…

I think Jay-Z is one of the most overrated rappers hes not the worst but he is not that good. TI is also overrated

Wow, the majority of these lists are absolutely brutal. If you were deciding upon best pop rap M.C.’s of all time then yeah, throw in Pac, Biggie, and Gay-Z for their catchy tracks and non-changing cadence. And if you want to make a list of best sell-out M.C.’s you can throw in Eminem, Nas, and a lot more. I give credit where it is due, based on originality, innovation, influence on the genre, lyrical content, and actual skill. Notably:

Really enjoyed reading your list Henry, you are one of the best. Nice to actually see a real list unlike that trash from MTV. I have a some what different opinion than yours but can repsect yours. The only major flaw I thought was having Big L so low, I really think he’s top 10. Nice to see that you didn’t overrate Jay-Z, Eminem and 2Pac, I’m so sick of people having them all in the top 5. Anyway here’s my list.
10. Andre 3000- One of the most unique artists of all time, Dre’ is so different and unique sometimes you wonder if he really is 1000 years ahead of our time. Regardless of going a tad pop dre’ can do any style look through each of kasts ablums and look how different he is on each one, no MC has changed forms as many times and made it work each time.
9. Ice Cube- I love the deabte I had with a friend. He stated that if Cube had died in 92 or 93 he would be considered the greatest of all time. And it’s close, even though he fell apart in the mid 90’s cube still has a massive impact, and many classics.
8. Jay-Z- Besides Eminem I believe Jay is the most overrated MC. The difference Jay-Z is in the top 10. And had the man stayed retired in in 03 he would be higher. You can’t deny his skills and when he wants to can make classic albums reasonable doubt, blueprint. But because he never stuck to his form in 96, and decided to go MTV, and because of the fued (beatdown) against Nas he really can’t be any higher than 8.
7. Big L- L was on the rise, and sestined to become a legend, but you know the rest. Still after listening to his first 2 albums and countless freestyles, you can see why hopes were so high, maybe the most underrated ever.
6. Big Daddy Kane- Guy gets no respect. Ask hip-hop fans to make a list of top 10 MC’s, and maybe kane shows up on 1 of every 10. It’s a shame because he is one of the best ever, certainly better then Jay-Z, who used the Kane’s style and swagg.
5. 2Pac- Maybe the most popular, and certainly a legend, but the more I listen to him the further down my list he goes. I loved pac’s old stuff, and Me against the world is a top 6 or 7 album IMO. But his last 2 albums were so repetitive, and the thug life gimmick was overkilled dramatically. Bright spots in his final 2 albums were overshadowed by filler, and thug talk. Still when he wanted to could give you chills, make you cry, or get you angry. Easily a top 5.
4. KRS-One- Great Pioneer, and still dropping great music, maybe the face of hip-hop. From the legendary BDP and Criminal Minded, to being a successfull soloist, and never selling out.
3. Notorious BIG- Originally I had Pac at 3, BIG at 5, but I feel BIG is a much better storyteller, and lyricist. He doesn’t get repetitive. The guy dropped 2 top 20 albums of all time in 3 years.
2. Nas- Some people love him some hate him, regardless all respect him, can anybody deny his abilities? Illmatic, and Stillmatic put him in top 10, but his lyrics, and storytelling cement him as one of the greatest.
1. Rakim- The creator without him, none of the Mc’s listed above would have made it, well KRS-One maybe but that’s all. This guy is the reason hip-hop thrived, and he was the single greatest at mono tone, and a top 3 lyricist. Without a doubt the God MC.
Also guys Eminem’s new album was terrible 90% pop. He is not in top 15 let alone #1 so overrated it’s not even funny. Only reason someone today would think he’s so good is because there is nobody else good playing right now who wayne? Drake? Gucci? they are all garbage, so eminem looks better. It’s like taking a decent looking girl you know decent but not smoking, and taking a mutant girl that’s like 300 pounds with acne, and standing them next to each other, and wow surpirse the decent looking girl looks better for some reason hmm???

Eminem is top 15 I will never get sick of sslp, mmlp they are classics I understand he is overrated but at the same time underrated basically from 98-02 he was a force maybe the best throughout that time but everything after 2003 has been brutal. I agree with 2Pac being overrated but he still is top 10, and I agree with bill the thug life gimmick was so repetitive I have him in top 10 for 2pacalypse now and me against the world, not for makaveli and all eyez on me. And Jay is no doubt top 10 from 96-01 he was carrying hip-hop still he’s no nas but give the man some respect.
In my personal opinion the GOAT really comes down to nas vs rakim i just think those guys have the best lyrics and are really on another planet then the rest, i give nas the edge because of his social impact storytelling abilities.

DJ Quik neeeeeds some love!!!!!!!
