Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Nas & Others Reveal Their Favorite MC's

Wednesday April 19, 2006
Lately, there's been a lot of talk about the greatest MC title. MTV has stepped in to aid the debate with their top 10 list and honorable mentions, devised by their hip-hop "brain trust." More interestingly, the rappers themselves have weighed in on the argument supplying their own lists of great emcees. I must commend some of them for not allowing beef or bias to adulterate their choices. For instance, 50 Cent named Nas as a top pick...sort of. Since some people have asked me about my top 10 lately, I'll go out on a limb and say that my list would include the following in no particular order: Common, Black Thought, Kool G Rap, Nas, Rakim, 2Pac, KRS-One, Jay-Z, Biggie, and Scarface.

Now let's take a look at MTV's Top 10 Greatest MC's:
  • 10. LL Cool J
  • 9. Eminem
  • 8. Ice Cube
  • 7. Big Daddy Kane
  • 6. KRS-One
  • 5. Nas
  • 4. Rakim
  • 3. Notorious B.I.G.
  • 2. Tupac
  • 1. Jay-Z
Don't forget to vote on our on-going Greatest MC's poll in the hip-hop forum, and feel free to respond to this post with your own top 10. Please keep an eye on this page, because there's a top 50 greatest emcees list on the way.

(2) Andrew Bisson says:

That MTV poll chose Jay-Z as the greatest MC? C’mon – how did Jay-Z reshape rap? Did he bring anything new to the table? No. He bit off Kane and Big.
Anyway, my top 10:
1. Nas
2. Common
3. Rakim
4. Kane
5. Posdnuos
6. Jeru the Damaja
7. Chuck D
8. Black Thought
9. Q-Tip
10. Andre Benjamin

The best current MC’s, besides the ones on the top 10, are Murs, Phonte of Little Brother, MF Doom, and Ghostface.

(4) rap says:

Some good choices up there. As for MTV’s list, it’s not even the top 10 that i have a problem with, it’s the order that’s mind-boggling.

(5) UniverSouLove says:

Rakim
Nas
KRS-One
Kool G Rap
Pharoah Munch
Black Thought
Genuis
Big Daddy Kane
LL Cool J
Posdnus (Plug One)

This is a hard one. But, I thought hard on it. There’s others that deserve mention, like Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Common, Lauren Hill, and the infamous Bahamadia.

To recieve such an honor is Sacred. I don’t agree with the MTV list either.

As an MC myself, you have to look at more than just album, CD sales. That’s only a small percentage of it.

Skills, technique, delivery, styles, cadence, and messages. It’s a science.

In peace,

(8) Illmatic620 says:

Universal, I notice you didnt put Tupac on your list, now I’m not an ignorant fool that will tout Tupac as my G.O.A.T. because even though I think he was the most emotion-stirring and powerful MC of all time, he was certainly not the best.

But in terms of impact don’t you think he deserves a place on your top ten?

Hova on top?? Thats crazy, i mean Hova’s got skills no doubt, but we talking greatest!!
1. Tupac
2. Nas
3. Scarface
4. Biggie
5. Rakim
6. Grandmaster Flash
7. Eminem
8. Jay-Z
9. KRS-1
10. Jada

Theres even no point arguing that 2pac is the Greatest. He was emotion stirring, powerful and i disagree with Illmatic620 because Pac IS the greatest. Have u seen his versatality? He is no diverse no other rapper can come even close to Pac. And Pac is synonymous with Biggie, so its always Pac 1 and Biggie 2 or Pac 2 And Biggie 1…thats not really true. Nas and Scarface are much better MC’s then Biggie and as far as Jay-Z goes he is talented but he is a rip-off. And for Slim Shady….u cant knock his talent!!Peace

(18) E.K.O. says:

I don’t really have a top 10, more like a top five. I also don’t have any order, but here are my top 5 rappers.
Common Sense(he will always be common sense to me :D ) One of my personaly fav rappers incredible lyrics and actually had a message.
GZA/Genius highly underated, the very best lyracist and rapper to come from Wu tang, just listen to liquid swords, the only wu-tang joint better than that is 36 chambers.
Rakim I don’t think I need to coment on rakim….
Ras Kass, amazing lyracist and was never afraid to speak his mind, and the BEST west coast rapper, better than Pac, sorry Pac :(
Immortal Technique, may seem to early for me to put him in top 5, since he only has 2 albums out, but so do a lot of rappers that I have seen mentioned, such as Biggie, Big L, and I think Pun. But Immortal Technique has mad flow, skills, delivery and incredible lyrics, not to mention a REAL message, pick up his albums Revolutionary Vol. 1 and 2. Thos are my top 5

(27) Yall RR Lost says:

How can you say The Greatest of All Times when you don’t include the entire time? The list is Bulls–t without Run-DMC on it. What is wrong with you people? How can yall s–t on the truth like that, constantly? Most of these list don’t start until 1990. Also, are we talking about lyrical skill, emotional impact or what? In terms of skill the list should look something like this _

1.LL Cool J – Original Rock the Bells
2.KRS-One – Most of his stuff
3.Eminem – please, don’t sleep!
4.Slick Rick – Snoop didn’t create Ladi dadi
5.Rakim – Listen, you’ll see.
6.Tretch – Naughty By Nature
7.Jay-Z – Okay, he has some skill.
8.REDman – Act like you know!
9.Notorious BIG
10.Run-DMC

I may need to revise this list a bit but, you get my point. For lyrical skill, Tupac don’t rank. In fact, Tretch wrote some of his hottest s–t, 4 real. Nas could spit but there’s no emotion in his delivery. Too monotone and that’s boring to listen to.

Holla!

(32) Chaostamer says:

You people are insane. Naming people like Lil Wayne, Lil Kim, and The Game?! And then some of you are naming groups. This is about the greatest MC of all time.

My opinion looks something like this. Note that these emcees are not precisely ordered.

1. KRS-One
2. Rakim
3. Common
4. Ice Cube
5. Nas
6. Chuck D
7. Big Daddy Kane
8. 2Pac
9. The Notorious B.I.G.
10. Eminem

Don’t forget, greatness isn’t about your lyrical talent. If it were, Big, Jay, and Em would top this list and Pac might not even make Top 50. Greatness is about skill, delivery, subject matter, influence, longevity, consistency, among other factors.

(34) Chaostamer says:

Hell no. Jay dropped 1 good album and one decent one. The rest is lazy commercial crap.

Nas is amazing, but not quite #2.

2Pac is overrated. Yeah, he’s influential, but not too skilled.

I love Biggie, but he didn’t have enough time to become #4.

The Game is an average emcee at best. His strength is in his beats only.

As awesome as Eminem is, he’s not #6…

Eazy-E and Dr. Dre didn’t even write their own lyrics. Without ghostwriters, they both suck.

Chamillionaire is talented, but hasn’t had enough time to prove himself.

Snoop Dogg hasn’t been truly great since Doggystyle .

Most of you need to stop allowing MTV to dictate via music “videos” who is considered a dope MC, and who isnt. Music videos and record sales, in my opinion, have little if any relevence to who should be considered a dope lyricist. As a matter of fact, million dollar videos are simply extended commercials to promote a mainstream product. If you wanna judge based on record sales, then MC Hammer is one of the greatest MC’s of all time! Anyway, here’s the definitive top 10 list IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER:

-Nas
-Common (this dude is really in his prime right now)
-Guru (from Gangstarr)
-Scarface
-Kool G. Rap
-Black Thought

(69) Jerz says:

1)Jay-Z (3 Classics, 10 albums, How is He not the best?)
2)Nas
3)Outkast
4)Common (Dude just dropped his 4th classic today. Had he been as consistant as Hov and Nas, he could have been #1)
5)The Notorious B.I.G. (Slightly Overrated, But definately great. He was way more simple and shallow than people like to admit. And by no means was he ever better than Jay-Z. Lyrically or Musically. Go listen to Brooklyn’s Finest and I love the Dough. While the skill issue is up for debate, the fact still remains that he has 2 albums and 1 classic. That can’t compare to Hov’s catalogue.)
6)2pac
7)Snoop Dogg
8)Eminem
9)Rakim (He arguably created everyone on this list and he’s got 2 classics under his belt. If he would have stayed consistent and relevent, he would have been higher.)
10)Kanye West (Kanye dropped 2 classics in a row in 04′ and 05′ and is geering up for his 3rd next month. On top of that Jay-Z’s best work, the blueprint; which seperated him from Big and Nas forever; would have never been without Kanye. Neither would Common’s recent classics. Technically, He is solely responsible for 5 hip-hop classics!!!)

I would not clasify Lauryn Hill as a rapper she is a true artist born with skills that many male rappers and female artists would kill for. Jay Z is too overrated, his music is too commercial and his lyrics are stupid sometimes because he always raps about how much money he has and how he is dating the hottest chick in the game so lame. Lauryn Hill might not be considered on the MTV list but her lyrics are intellectually done and educational far much superior than what Jay Z can have or ever will produce.
