Top 100 Greatest Rap Songs of All Time

Monday April 17, 2006
In the 30+ years of hip-hop's existence, our ears have been polluted by tons of listless tunes like Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby" and most recently, the Black Eyed Peas' detestable pop hit, "My Humps." Thankfully, for every sleazeball, there are at least 10 superb songs. After painstakingly digging in my bottomless crates and back-pedaling three decades down memory lane, I've managed to uncover some of the greatest rap songs ever. Without further ado, I present to you the 100 Greatest Rap Songs.

(16) JWM says:

I can’t believe what I’m hearing. Everyone knows that when someone dies they are then regarded as this super larger than life musician. look at Nirvana, a very popular group, but as soon as Kurt Cobain died Nirvana was then all the sudden responsible for changing rock & this big influential band. While Biggie & Tupac are definitely in the top 10 all-time, to me they are not in the top 5. The best 5 all-time in no particular order are: Rakim, Chuck D, Method Man, Ice Cube, Eazy-E. And some consideration would be: Tupac, Biggie, DMC (from Run DMC), KRS-1, Nas. Tupac has one of the best voices & delivery, but his rhymes to me just werent as witty & clever as the others. When Tupac was alive he was not regarded as the best ever, not even the best at Death Row at the time. But Dr. Dre as far as producing, rapping, and finding talent is without a doubt the greatest single icon in rap history. The list of emcee’s he has brought us is remarkable. Maybe some of you are a little younger or dont realize but he started: Ice Cube, Eazy-E, MC Ren, Snoop Dogg, Warren G, Nate Dog, Black Sheep, Eminem, 50 Cent, The Game & made Tupac from good rapper to superstar.

January 23, 2007 at 6:09 pm
(17) Jordan says:

How the hell can u hav a top 100 without 2pac “Changes” or DMX “Up in Here”, or “Ruff Ryders Anthem”or 2pac’s “Life Goes On”. Ok list but need a lot more DMX, 2pac and Biggie.

February 19, 2007 at 11:11 pm
(32) David says:

How could you leave out “It Takes Two” – Rob Base, “I’m Bad” – LL Cool J, and “Roxanne, Roxanne” – UTFO. Where is DMX & Ludicris? No Whodini?! I never even heard of the #1 song, so I played it and it really sucked.

All bout the old school. started it all
Top one:
It Takes Two- Rob Base

Reason why every 1 loves tupac and biggie is that probably the only mainstream rappers that had a lot of big hit records. Unlike more less known rappers that had a couple of great songs. Quality over quantity

They had potential to be really good, but i dont think they reached it.

April 12, 2007 at 10:11 pm
(65) Nat says:

This is a good group of songs, but there’s just too much missing, and a lot of songs that are, well, let’s just say questionable. And why is there not a single mention of Notorious Thugs, one of the greatest songs, rap or otherwise, in the last 20 years.

April 13, 2007 at 12:41 pm

(106) Matityahu says:

this list has songs that are good cuz their socially consious and catchy but it doest stick to the roots of hip hop too well… its too hard to have just 100 songs on a list and its too hard to pick just 10 artists… u gotta look for MCs with flow AND innovation… so in no real order…

Pac, Biggie, Big Daddy Kane, Outkast, Beastie Boys (controversial im sure but their cut and paste beats were true innovative genious that MANY rappers utilize check Paul’s Boutique to see what i mean), Kool G Rap, Big L, NWA, Snoop, Common, Immortal Technique, Nas, Jay-Z, Grand Master Flash, Gang Starr, Eminem, Wu Tang, Big Pun, Cypress Hill, Talib Kweli, Jadakiss (sets the bar for punch line rap)

MCs who set the Foundation: Busy Bee, Kool Moe Dee, EPMD, KRS-1 (and still), Whodini, Marly Marl, Run DMC, Slick Rick, Ice-T, Doug E. Fresh and Dana Dane, Sugar Hill Gang,

DJ’s to note: Grand Wizzard Theodore, Mix Master Mike, Biz Markie

Female MCs who widened the scope of Rap: Eve (or Gangsta if u like her early tracks), Roxanne Shante, MC Lyte, Queen Latifa, and of course Missy Elliot

Newest Talent who show the most potential: Kanye, Lupe, Papoose, Game

Now before u go and get upset that i didnt put one of ur faviorite rappers on my list consider this: what new contributions did this person add? Anyone can spit a verse and mix a hot beat, but who opens our eyes and really helps us to appreciate what it is that they’re saying? Alot of good rappers make great songs, but only a few can spin a genre in a direction that the world never saw before… thats how these 44 rappers and DJs made my list

(118) B_Lett says:

Alright, there are some decent songs up here, but like almost everyone else says, Tupac’s Changes should be in the top 10 if not number 1.

After listening to I Used To Love H.E.R. I do understand why it was put at number 1 on the list. It after all, completely explains what hip hop is all about.

If I had to make a list for the top 10 rappers, here is what I’d have to say.

1. Tupac
2. Eminem
3. Common
4. Dr. Dre
5. Nas
6. Biggie
7. Bone Thugs N Harmony
8. Outkast
9. Lil Wayne
10. Jay-Z/ Game/ 50 Cent

2pac hands down number 1. Biggie falls in the category with Tupac, but I feel that other rap artists have shown more to me than he has.
Eminem is truly genius with his lyrics and his delivery.
Common and Nas both have some of the best messages in Rap/Hip-hop.
Dr. Dre is the most influential figure in Rap.
Bone Thugs N Harmony are the sickest rappers alive, no one matches their flow, and they are coming back.
Outkast, like BTNH, flows well and has impacted Hip-Hop well.
Lil Wayne can freestyle like no other. He packs the most heat of today’s rappers.
The Game, 50 Cent, and Jay-Z all have their ups and downs, but they all have heart towards Rap.
As 50 Cent has gone on with his career, he is showing more and more potential.

Krs one, Dr. Dre, and Rakim are the most influencial rap icons of all time.
Rakim’s rhymes are incredibly poetic and his lyricist skills are unmatched by any rapper ever, even Nas. Krs one tought rappers to support their community through MCing rather than belittle the rap community. Lastly Dr. Dre is unmatched in his abilty to produce, and find talent.

A passionate social activist with expressive lyrics who knew how to appeal to people with his revolutionary views. Never showed fear, commanded immense respect from whoever he dealt with, encouraged people to “stop, study your lessons, always do your best” (Me Against The World) and follow their dreams.

I listen to Pac, but I tend to gravitate more towards his songs like Me Against The World, , Changes, etc. He lived what he spoke (well, most of it) and the fact that he died at the peak of his career only immortalized him. Very emotional in his lyrics, not necessarily the best/most skillful lyrics, but emotional and passionate and can really touch your heart if you take the time to appreciate. This might be stretching it, but Pac is to me a sort of Shakespeare, who will live forever because he spoke of ideas and concepts that everyone can relate to, like jealousy, greed, hatred, injustice, etc. and he did it articulately and with style. Pac knew how to balance meaningful, deep songs with radio smash hits, an ability lacking in a lot of today’s artists

I’d agree with the person who said that Dr. Dre is probably the single most important icon in Hip-hop for his contributions (artists, beats, and NWA) but i’d like to also recognize DJ Premier (he produced a great number of the songs on this top 100) as a Hip-Hop Legend.

(144) who cares says:

2pac is the greatest rapper ever why? he has the most balanced in terms of sound, lyrics, and style , his flow depending on the emotion of the song voice and lyrics are both in syncronization and you can feel the emotion of the song and music is about emotion feeling it, 2pac does this better than any other rapper. its funny how some people talk about his lyrics most of his songs are acompanied with really good lyrics the only reason you would doubt this is if you have not listen to enough 2pac, the other thing is 2pac is international people all over the world have so much respect for him more than almost any other rapper. and record sales no need to mention that, if he made alot of record sales when he was dead how about if he was alive with music done when he was there? more than the 75 000 000 that he has sold today.

Tupac all day. Then Nas, Big and Hov in that order. Pac may not have had the witty punchlines and the briliant metaphors like most rappers, but his passionate delivery would floor any rapper or MC on the same track. Biggie was outrapped by Bonethugz on notorious thugs, Jay Z was outrepped by Eminem on renegade, such a thing would never happen to pac. he also got message and realness that made people like me identify themeselves with him(I live in Kenya). Metaphors dont intrigue you for ever but the truth will always remain till the end of time. That’s why Pac is highly idolized here in Africa and the world. Until Hov comes up with a track tighter that Nas’ the world is yours, Nas will always remain the second greatest ever and the best alive.

Yo if Pac and Big r the best rappers
then how come Nas’ DEBUT ALBUM Illmatic is considered the greatest of all time in hip hop.
The only other album that can even compete is The Chronic by Dr.Dre.
I dont get how The World is Yours lost to Any 2Pac song
does pac or biggie have any album that is critically acclaimed like Nas’ Illmatic.
and i the only other reason that Pac and BIG are so praised is beacause of when they died, the west vs east beef. if they had died at any other time they wouldnt be considered as great. look at jam master jay,he was shot, he was part of RUN DMC, he was one of the people who brought hip hop to the mainstream, do we hear of him as much as Pac? nope cuz there wasnt as much media attention on hip hop as there was when Pac and Biggie were killed
and if this is the top 100 list where are Africa Bambataa’s or Clive Campbell A.k.a Cool Herc’s song. And for those of u who dont know them, those two started hip hop, literally

top 10 hip-hop artists for meee

1. OutKast
(not based on lyrical ability, but uniqueness and ability to withstand the test of time without conforming in every single one of their classics)

2. Nas
(no explanation needed)

3. Tupac
(changes – classic, Ghetto Gospel w/ Elton John produced by eminem is probably the best song by him not heard by many.. sadly)

4. Immortal Technique
(great lyricist w/ nice freestyles n’ has the sickest punchlines.. such as in “industrial revolution”. . . and “you never know” and “dance with the devil” are deep)

5. Talib Kweli/Mos Def
(more talib, but i’ll put mos def with him since they have so many songs together)

6. Big L
(sickness on the punchlines and freestyles)

7. Aesop Rock
(most complex and one of the best lyricists ever.. listen to “Daylight” and “Coffee”)

8. Kanye West
(best mainstream with Lil Wayne a very close 2nd)

9. Hieroglyphics
(mostly Del the Funky Homosapien, but overall the group and individuals have delivered so many classics.. 93 til infinityyy)

10. Atmosphere
(great lyrics and more meaningful songs than most anyone else)

honorable mentions –

soulja boy… lol

Biggie was a great freestyler, but songs were a bit overrated, especially after his death.. but even b/c of this, he is still in the top 15/20 no doubt

Eminem has sick lyrics and concepts in many of his songs too

April 29, 2008 at 1:36 pm
(191) LdoubleS says:

Gi Manto, maybe Rapper’s Delight remix ft Rodney P, Skibadee, Chester P, Yungun etc is a bit closer to the greatest song ever. and whoever thinks eminem is the greatest rapper is dillusional. he raps only 4 money. hes way to commercial, he has the sense of humour of a 7 year old and he sonds like he is on helium. listen to JEDI MIND TRICKS,(e.g – when all light dies) or IMMORTAL TECHNIQUE(e.g point of no return) – well they are the best 2 the US has to offer as its all way 2 commerical and has no meaning. and im sure you’ll agree,Im trying to get it through to you uneducated people. you’re not gangsta if u listen to eminem, he is 4 10 year olds. nuff said.

(198) BloodBath says:

so ive been an underground head and 80s head a 90s head a mainstream head so i may have a good combination in my list:

1.Nas (most versatile MC of all time, always relevant top 3 best lyrically too)
2.Canibus (illest lyricist ever no matter what you think of the ll beef, he destroyed him. just phenomenal)
3.Big L (had punchlines and stories like no other. that why i never think much of cassidy and wayne when you think of big l’s lines he just eats everyone one alive in punchlines)
4.Big Pun (is there anything i can say? one of the illest lyricists no dopubt top 3 lyricists)
5.Biggie Smalls (great storyteller but his use of excessive violence is not necessary to get this point through. though genius.)
6.Rakim (the PIONEERRRRRRRRRRRRRR the G-O-D rakim allah the definition of flow and relevance he was the never dying always relevant mc)
7.Common( the most consistent mc ever. no question. no album flopped every album of his may be considered in the top 100 of rap)
8.Jay-Z (Reasonable Doubt. Blueprint. wow. always has mass appeal though has “sold out: in recent times)
9.Eminem (Infinite. period. no emcee can ever has such emotion on any track as em has done. maybe ONE MIC and nothing else comes to mind)
10.Black Thought (lyrically one of the this illest and on top of that, he stays positive)

of course theres about 100 rappers i could name but no one’s going to read that. wu tang was excluded cause i cant choose between deck, gza, raekwon, ghost, and method. MF Doom isnt a great rapper just a great producer. cube wasnt that consistent. same with mobb deep, no consistency. pac WAS a poet but his lyricas were comparable to that of a 10 year old with the spin of a sick message behind it so hes def not top 10 -maybe top 20. guru isnt that sick without premiere. same with jeru the damaja. AZ JUSTTTTTTTT missed this list i can argue him as 8-11 no doubt. cormega may have been 12. ras kass top 20 definitely. same with scarface. elzhi may have been top 25. a lot more to mention but i cant go on forever ok i will….pharoah monch, q-tip, mos def hahaha

July 12, 2008 at 11:15 am
(199) BloodBath says:

i honestly feel nas is better than almost every rapper in top 5-20 COMBINED. maybe not including the top 2-4 lol but i see ppl trying to impress with their underground knowledge. canibus nothing more said. techinque is a ras kass biter without the knowledge or lyrics. vinnie paz was eaten alive on fusion centre by canibus eve though they cool. no one can ever shine on a track with canibus thats what history tells me.

(200) Furious says:

In response to Andre’s comment, I’m not sure why people insist on calling Tupac and Notorious B.I.G. the two greatest rappers ever. While both artists were extremely influential in progressing the genre of rap, I really don’t think either of them qualify for title of “best rapper.” It may sound like a cop-out, but it is impossible to give anyone a “best” title when each rapper’s style is unique (or at least should be…that’s the inherent beauty of Rap). To call Tupac the greatest holds just as much weight as calling O.D.B. the greatest rapper of all time. Both are dead, both are extremely recognizable, and both influenced rap in a way that no other artist has matched…and I didn’t see any O.D.B. solo songs on this Top 100 list!

this list has one big error. the number one rap song of all time is changes by tupac. it talks about if there would ever be a black president. If tupac were alive, he would be proud of what has happened this week

I agree with Comment 16 if 2 pac was still alive he would be just like all the other rappers out there… but don’t get me wrong he is a great artest but there are other lyrical guenius out there that are remarkable. like Lil’ wayne and eminem. and countless others that don’t get the credit they deserve because alot of people just listen to the song for the chourse.

My top 10 rappers:

3. Tyra Banks – The Queen of Free Style
4. Ice Tray – Supports Ice Cube literally
5. Threepac/3pac – Greater than 2pac
6. Peanut Eminem – Sweet on the mic, but messy
7. Pee-Wee Herman – Quick on the beat

Anyone who disputes this does not know rap. Mill Creek in the heezy. Or hizzy. Or house. Or humble abode. Or apartment, technically.

wow this is probably the worst list i have ever seen and i really wish i did not just read that. who ever wrote that needs to go back and listen to biggie smalls, nas, eminem, jay-z, and possibly tupac. and lets not even start with whose better: biggie or tupac cause the answer is simple: biggie smalls is a lot better becuase he could rhyme, had flow, all the songs he did were amazing and just knew how to rap whereas tupac did so much work but very few songs were actually good. everyone says he was a poet and could do whatever he wanted but he was sucha poser and look he got shot before biggie. he had some good songs but i dont see how anyone can consider him the best. but anyways my list would be:
1. biggie
2. eminem
3. nas
4. jay-z
5. lil wayne
6. tupac-
7. dr. dre
8. rakim
9. dmx

True, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but honestly…HOW THE F**K COULD YA’LL INCLUDE SOME OF THESE PEOPLE IN YOUR TOP 10 RAPPERS OF ALL TIME?!?!?

Soulja Boy?!? u need 2 stop smokin that angel dust & slap the ish outta urself

50 cent? Kanye West? Game? TI? Ja Rule? Petey Pablo?

and even Dre & Snoop should not be top 10 of all time…they were great gangsta rappers @ the beginning of their careers, but nowhere near greatest of all time…Dre is definitely 1 of the greatest producers of all time tho…

If u don’t have Rakim & Scarface on your list, then you need to step outside your mainstream, radio listenin, MTV watchin shell & discover the real deal…

and if u didn’t even consider Bun-B of UGK then somethings wrong with ya, that cats been in the game for 20+ years now & spits fire on damn near everything he touches…there’s a reason he is featured on just about everybodies album now-a-days…

Two things:

1. If you have Rapper’s Delight at #2, then Rapture should be in the top 10 at least; Rapture came out around the same time, actually paid respect to the other Hip Hop Acts (Rapper’s Delight just stole from other artists), and charted much higher (hit #1, and was the first rap song to hit #1, and the only rap song to hit #1 for about 10 more years).

2. As people pointed out above, Changes is the best Rap Song of all time. It is not just the best hip hop song of all time, but it is one of the most notable and generation defining songs of the past 25 years; there hasn’t been a song as good since.

I think you must add E-Rule’s “Listen Up” to this list — it is one of the most underrated Hip-Hop tracks of all-time. But one listen and I’ll agree that you have to admit that it belongs here…esp, considering that it was written in 93-94 time frame by a West Coast (LA) rapper that was WELL ahead of his time. You are truly lucky if you own one of these Pallas Records 12″ and can get a small fortune for it if you happen to sell it..

(293) Dylan says:

Hmmm. I hope the major figures and can bring back rap soon. that you hear on the radio now.. Its disgusting. This isn’t rap. Like Lil Flip? All these new rappers that you don’t even know their names because their music isn’t worth it.

For me.. Personally. My top ten in no real order.

Dr. Dre, Wu Tang, Eminem, Mos Def, Nas, N.W.A., Biggie, Blackalicious (because it’s rap that preaches intelligence :) ), Gangstarr, and 2pac.

Again. Thats just me. We just need a revival of these motherf–kers and get rid of this poppy hippy rap.

The Rap World’s theme song should be something like Eazy’s Boyz in the Hood, or Dre’s D.R.E.. Not Akon. Dude sounds like an idiot anyways.

thanks for reading. :)

(Some of the best rap songs of the late 80’s early 90’s)Listen to: Ain’t No Half Steppin

9.Jay-Z
(His debut album was one of the best of all time)Listen to: I Can’t Get With That

10.Ol’Dirty Bastard
(His style was ‘different’, but he made some great songs)Listen to: No More(unreleased)

WHAT NO TUPAC!NO BIGGIE!? YOUR LIST IS TERRIBLE!

No it’s not. The artists on my list didn’t get their own movies, and didn’t get all the press coverage that Tupac and Big did. Not that Pac and Big are bad, they’re just extremely overated. I’m sure no one will give any other artist a chance because they think that they think they already found the best. Listen to those songs with an open mind, because I think some of those artists are a bit of an acquired taste. But they are better lyricists once you sit back and listen

(310) Curtis says:

You all forget so easily. When you mention rappers, you do so based on how recently you encountered them. This is only natural. And that is why some may say Maradona is greater than Pele! So, I can comfortably say CURTIS BLOW is the Rapper of all Time because he brought rap to lime light. That makes him King of Rap. What about Mc Hammer? Another argument can be made by using the number of records sold and chart positions, though. For example Micheal Jackson is King of Pop because of records sold and how many time his tracks rose to e.g No, 1 position. These to me is more real.

(333) CD says:

I don’t really agree with this list at all. There are a lot of songs missing, and a lot of songs that shouldn’t be there…for example: should be there, Outkast Aquemini, way more 2pac, better Biggie songs…and Im not talking about that MTV Puff Daddy bulljive, Im talkin about songs like Ni**az Bleed…listen to the lyrics of that song, same thing with Aquemini, AND Get up, Get Out from Southernplayali….No Goodie Mob songs?…Eminem’s Til’ I Collapse and When the Music Stops…where are they?

But music is a funny thing…everybodies ears hear things different. It’s all an opinion.

September 27, 2009 at 5:50 pm
(334) Malik says:

I can’t belive some of ya’ll have Eazy-E and Dr. Dre on there. Ice Cube wrote most of NWA’s stuff, so neither of them should be on there. Dr. Dre is arguably the best hip-hop producer ever, but he is not a top 10 MC. Here’s my top 10 (in no particular order)
Nas
Rakim
Tupac
Biggie
KRS-One
Jay-Z
Andre 3000 (or OutKast)
Ice Cube
Eminem
Kool G Rap
Also, Scarface can make a name for himself to be on this list. No respect for the South on alot of these lists. OutKast make’s more meaningful stuff than most the people ya’ll mentioned. Listen to their first 3 Albums, and you’ll see what I’m sayin’

And Note:
Lil Wayne (Note, I’m not a Lil Wayne Fan, but he is good. Most of ya’ll don’t have Lil Wayne in your
top 10 because ya’ll just don’t like him…)
Let’s be unbiased critics here……

(337) RL says:

If there is an argument of who’s the best rapper. Pac and Biggie will always come up as 1st and 2nd. But i thought this was a forum for best rap SONG!! Now what constitutes best rap song can be debated. Which made most impact vs which lyrically stands the trials of time. Undoubtedly Rapper’s Delight would have to be near to one because it was made rap come to the forefront based on impact it made. But if i was to argue for best rap song just based on lyrics and the consistency throughout the entire song it would have to be Dream Shatterer by Big Pun. The flow, lyrics, metaphors and wordplay are far superior to any single Pac or Biggie song. And unlike some of the older rapper, (i.e. Rakim or KRS-1) his flow, in this particular song, still matches and outdoes any lyrical prowess of the some new generation rappers. I think Eminem, Lil Wayne, T.I. and Ludacris have amazing wordplay that obviously is better than older cats because people always aim to improve and outdo the people that came before them. If rappers didn’t try to improve we would still be listening to the same stuff we have since the beginning.Wordplay, sound, and delivery has improved, maybe not message. The flow that new gen rappers have is faster and more complex than older cats. But Dream Shatterer goes harder and consistently throughout the whole song, than any other song out there , new or old. So if you need a more updated sound this really enjoy and old rap song listen to the Endangered Species version. I’m not going to say Big Pun was the best rapper out there because to be honest his most memorable songs were commercial. As opposed as Nas who most memorable songs were If i World the World or One Mic, for example. But again based on on flow, lyrics and wordplay Dream Shattterer destroys the competition.
