I can’t believe what I’m hearing. Everyone knows that when someone dies they are then regarded as this super larger than life musician. look at Nirvana, a very popular group, but as soon as Kurt Cobain died Nirvana was then all the sudden responsible for changing rock & this big influential band. While Biggie & Tupac are definitely in the top 10 all-time, to me they are not in the top 5. The best 5 all-time in no particular order are: Rakim, Chuck D, Method Man, Ice Cube, Eazy-E. And some consideration would be: Tupac, Biggie, DMC (from Run DMC), KRS-1, Nas. Tupac has one of the best voices & delivery, but his rhymes to me just werent as witty & clever as the others. When Tupac was alive he was not regarded as the best ever, not even the best at Death Row at the time. But Dr. Dre as far as producing, rapping, and finding talent is without a doubt the greatest single icon in rap history. The list of emcee’s he has brought us is remarkable. Maybe some of you are a little younger or dont realize but he started: Ice Cube, Eazy-E, MC Ren, Snoop Dogg, Warren G, Nate Dog, Black Sheep, Eminem, 50 Cent, The Game & made Tupac from good rapper to superstar.
nirvana was popular because they were basically the first grunge rock band to be successful, not because Cobain died. They did bring in the modern rock we hear today. And if you didn’t know, many people are not regarded as the best ever in any category until they are dead or have gotten to the age of forty. Tupac died at 25, how could you regard him as the best ever if he wasn’t even half way done with his career before he got shot?

Alright, there are some decent songs up here, but like almost everyone else says, Tupac’s Changes should be in the top 10 if not number 1.
After listening to I Used To Love H.E.R. I do understand why it was put at number 1 on the list. It after all, completely explains what hip hop is all about.

Common and Nas both have some of the best messages in Rap/Hip-hop.
Dr. Dre is the most influential figure in Rap.
Bone Thugs N Harmony are the sickest rappers alive, no one matches their flow, and they are coming back.
Outkast, like BTNH, flows well and has impacted Hip-Hop well.
Lil Wayne can freestyle like no other. He packs the most heat of today’s rappers.
The Game, 50 Cent, and Jay-Z all have their ups and downs, but they all have heart towards Rap.
As 50 Cent has gone on with his career, he is showing more and more potential.
I am 15 years old, and I have grown up listening more to today’s rap. I still stick with my thoughts in my last post.
I am however going to listen to some of the previously listed artists. I have knowledge of the old school, but I am not familiar with their music.

Rakim’s rhymes are incredibly poetic and his lyricist skills are unmatched by any rapper ever, even Nas. Krs one tought rappers to support their community through MCing rather than belittle the rap community. Lastly Dr. Dre is unmatched in his abilty to produce, and find talent.

I listen to Pac, but I tend to gravitate more towards his songs like Me Against The World, , Changes, etc. He lived what he spoke (well, most of it) and the fact that he died at the peak of his career only immortalized him. Very emotional in his lyrics, not necessarily the best/most skillful lyrics, but emotional and passionate and can really touch your heart if you take the time to appreciate. This might be stretching it, but Pac is to me a sort of Shakespeare, who will live forever because he spoke of ideas and concepts that everyone can relate to, like jealousy, greed, hatred, injustice, etc. and he did it articulately and with style. Pac knew how to balance meaningful, deep songs with radio smash hits, an ability lacking in a lot of today’s artists

Pac may not have had the witty punchlines and the briliant metaphors like most rappers, but his passionate delivery would floor any rapper or MC on the same track. Biggie was outrapped by Bonethugz on notorious thugs, Jay Z was outrepped by Eminem on renegade, such a thing would never happen to pac. he also got message and realness that made people like me identify themeselves with him(I live in Kenya). Metaphors dont intrigue you for ever but the truth will always remain till the end of time. That’s why Pac is highly idolized here in Africa and the world. In response to Andre’s comment, I’m not sure why people insist on calling Tupac and Notorious B.I.G. the two greatest rappers ever. While both artists were extremely influential in progressing the genre of rap, I really don’t think either of them qualify for title of “best rapper.” It may sound like a cop-out, but it is impossible to give anyone a “best” title when each rapper’s style is unique (or at least should be…that’s the inherent beauty of Rap). To call Tupac the greatest holds just as much weight as calling O.D.B. the greatest rapper of all time. Both are dead, both are extremely recognizable, and both influenced rap in a way that no other artist has matched…and I didn’t see any O.D.B. solo songs on this Top 100 list!

If you have Rapper’s Delight at #2, then Rapture should be in the top 10 at least; Rapture came out around the same time, actually paid respect to the other Hip Hop Acts (Rapper’s Delight just stole from other artists), and charted much higher (hit #1, and was the first rap song to hit #1, and the only rap song to hit #1 for about 10 more years).
2. As people pointed out above, Changes is the best Rap Song of all time. It is not just the best hip hop song of all time, but it is one of the most notable and generation defining songs of the past 25 years; there hasn’t been a song as good since.

I think you must add E-Rule’s “Listen Up” to this list — it is one of the most underrated Hip-Hop tracks of all-time. But one listen and I’ll agree that you have to admit that it belongs here…esp, considering that it was written in 93-94 time frame by a West Coast (LA) rapper that was WELL ahead of his time. You are truly lucky if you own one of these Pallas Records 12″ and can get a small fortune for it if you happen to sell it..

You all forget so easily. When you mention rappers, you do so based on how recently you encountered them. This is only natural. And that is why some may say Maradona is greater than Pele! So, I can comfortably say CURTIS BLOW is the Rapper of all Time because he brought rap to lime light. That makes him King of Rap. What about Mc Hammer? Another argument can be made by using the number of records sold and chart positions, though. For example Micheal Jackson is King of Pop because of records sold and how many time his tracks rose to e.g No, 1 position. These to me is more real.

If there is an argument of who’s the best rapper. Pac and Biggie will always come up as 1st and 2nd. But i thought this was a forum for best rap SONG!! Now what constitutes best rap song can be debated. Which made most impact vs which lyrically stands the trials of time. Undoubtedly Rapper’s Delight would have to be near to one because it was made rap come to the forefront based on impact it made. But if i was to argue for best rap song just based on lyrics and the consistency throughout the entire song it would have to be Dream Shatterer by Big Pun. The flow, lyrics, metaphors and wordplay are far superior to any single Pac or Biggie song. And unlike some of the older rapper, (i.e. Rakim or KRS-1) his flow, in this particular song, still matches and outdoes any lyrical prowess of the some new generation rappers. I think Eminem, Lil Wayne, T.I. and Ludacris have amazing wordplay that obviously is better than older cats because people always aim to improve and outdo the people that came before them. If rappers didn’t try to improve we would still be listening to the same stuff we have since the beginning.Wordplay, sound, and delivery has improved, maybe not message. The flow that new gen rappers have is faster and more complex than older cats. But Dream Shatterer goes harder and consistently throughout the whole song, than any other song out there , new or old. So if you need a more updated sound this really enjoy and old rap song listen to the Endangered Species version. I’m not going to say Big Pun was the best rapper out there because to be honest his most memorable songs were commercial. As opposed as Nas who most memorable songs were If i World the World or One Mic, for example. But again based on on flow, lyrics and wordplay Dream Shattterer destroys the competition.

listen all those rappers are nice but rap means speak freely, only one rapper has bridge a gap between battle and music and that is canibus, you know the one who turned ll cool j into a actor, eminem is his next target, the white boy is fire but he is a battler only in movies, last rapper on the 8mile looks like canibus and comes from a educated background just like him, we forgot about what makes anybody the best in there field, and thats doing the job better than them, canibus has destroyed every rapper he has come across and there is plenty that want a piece of him, listen to aids is gold and hiv is platinum and you will see what the best song sounds like.

Look, I hate to be one of those people who has to bring his problems with a subjective list to attention, but “It Ain’t Hard to Tell” by Nas, off Illmatic, has to be on any list. The flow Nas had in that song; I’m telling you, nobody can rhyme like that anymore. Especially not the self proclaimed “Best Rapper Alive.” That beat, though, that’s the best part. It puts you in a trance; you can’t do anything but nod your head and appreciate the lyrical and auditory brilliance Nas and Co. orchestrated in those three and a half minutes. It Ain’t Hard to Tell, gotta be top 10.
Good list, all these people that r saying that you need more Pac are getting annoying. It seems there is a big group of people bent on saying 2Pac’s the best and he’s become the consensus. Now people just assume he’s the best and buy all of his songs without ever really listening to other artists. I used to be just like this but then I delved deeper into the hip-hop genre my faves are now Nas and Rakim.
Nice pick for no. 1, but I’m sick of everybody putting songs like The Message and Rapper’s Delight at the top just because they were early. Sure they were influential but they really weren’t that good of rap songs. Love the World is Yours by Nas its my fave.
I’m wondering why people tell their favourite rappers. Isn’t this the greatest SONGS list?

There has already been some decent dubstep/rap combinations such as Orifice Vulgatron from Foreign Beggars making a track with Excision and not forgetting the Wu Tang meets the indie culture. All made with collaborations from other dubstep producers.
Your list of best rappers is garbage if you dont have Jay Z at number one, none of your lists have any female, and also if you think Big L with one or two albums, same goes for BIG are the best, face facts, both died at their peak, in most cases, first album and second album are the best, the classics etc.
If you want to look at BIG, Big L or NAs and compare them to Jay Z, well take Jay’s 1st album and his 2nd, then look at them against each other, only time someone says NAs is best, they refer to Illmatic, come on, move on, illmatic was ages ago, same as Reasonable Doubt and Life after death and whatever Big L put out… well Tupac, he has more albums, for me I can treat him like I do Jay Z, although his fame came with his death, thus his albums started selling.
Your Rakim, KRS One etc are great as well, I respect that. their influence is there and will always remain.

1. Nas – lyrically the best I’ve heard. And of course it’s easy to talk about Illmatic… And it’s my favourite album, but he still puts out joints I love so there’s no argument
2. Big L – died young… He was gonna blow… We didn’t hear his best, but stick on some devil’s son, put it on or danger zone, and you can feel the realness
3. Biggie – brilliant lyricist again… Legend of the east
4. Pac – love Pac’s music, I do agree he was overrated but he is still undoubtably one of the greats… And there are songs by him like bury me a g that are overlooked but are great
5. Big pun – shame his size killed him, great voice and could run with a song like no other… Brilliant artist
6. Ice cube – classic westcoast joints like it was a good day show how good he was, my personal favourite from NWA
7. Immortal Technique – one of the best out at the moment… Hip-hop has died, and when I hear tunes from guys like immortal and celph titled, I believe the golden days may return one day
8. Rakim – I must be honest I wasn’t that into rakim when I first heard him but I am listening to more of his stuff and I do think he is good undoubtably.
9. Jay-Z – most successful solo artist ever, and when you listen to classics from reasonable doubt it is clear he is a brilliant artist, and as he has progressed I have been happy with the level of his music, from big pimpin to on to the next one
10. Eminem – it’s hard to rank these artists because when you look at the list there are so many missed like those from wu-tang, Mobb deep, snoop, redman, krs-one etc. However, Eminem is a great I believe he should be in the top 10 so here he is.
Oh and to NAhhhh… Get off Jay-z’s dick and listen to some more artists, plus nas destroyed him on ether and em destroyed him on renegade… And I thought that before nas said it.

Ok everybody, stop arguing over which rapper is indeed the best. Each person is effected by someones lyrics in a different way. I enjoy listening to Tupac the most because I believe thathe sang from his heart, he didn’t try to make himself sound different, he truly just spoke what was on his mind, and didn’t care what anybody else thought about him. Does jwm listen to rap at all….?????tupac, biggie,easy e are the three best rap acts of all time there’s no doubt….then you can start to throw some others after such as jay z,nas, big pun,odb, ice t , etc…but i feel you cant count the groups in the same light, jurassic 5, bone thugz, westside connection, NWA, naughty by nature, de la soul,cypress although amazing artists they are somewhat different from the soloists,…, Andre has the right idea the list in my opinion, all though does put some great acts on there, it misses out a host of unbelievable acts and does not give the respect deserved by these three rappers….to be honest by the time i got part of the way down the list, and the way its been put together, i half expected to see vanilla ice and TQ in the top 5 lol……
Changes by Tupac will always be my favourite.
