Lupe Fiasco Shelves His Debut Album (Food & Liquor)

Monday April 17, 2006
Hip-hop poster boy and Chicago's budding rap ambassador, Lupe Fiasco, has announced that the original version of his debut album, Food & Liquor, may never see the light of day. Lupe stated that he was in the studio waiting to record a song with Philadelphia hip-hop siren, Jill Scott, when he received the news that Food & Liquor had been leaked to the internet. Lupe revealed that the album which took him 5 years to create will now be replaced by a brand new project, no thanks to bootleggers. “Everything happens for a reason and God wills what He wills when He wills so I gotta take this one and keep it moving. I'm goin’ to take some time out and refocus on some other things for a minute-maybe my sneaker and toy stuff,” said Lupe Fiasco in a personal statement on Okayplayer's Message board. What Lupe may or may not realize is that album leaks are not necessarily synonymous with lackluster record sales. Jay-Z's Black Album was reportedly leaked two months before its official release, but the album still attained double platinum status. Common's Be was heavily bootlegged, yet the album was certified platinum, and was still brandished as a "must-buy" by various media outlets.
