T.I. may now tilt his virtual crown to the side with a lot more confidence, having attained the highest first week album sales of 2006 so far. His fourth album, King, confirmed my predictions by cruising past Ghostface Killah's Fishscale and Prince's 3121 to debut at #1 on Billboard 200. For many artists, it would normally take months or even years to reach RIAA gold certfication. For T.I. and Atlantic Records, it only took one week to sell a remarkable 522,000 units of his new album. T.I. now shares that feat with other hip-hop elites who have sold over 500,000 in their first week of release, among them Jay-Z, Nelly, Kanye West, 50 Cent, and Eminem. In addition to having both the #1 album (King) and the #3 movie ("ATL"), T.I.'s debut marks the biggest initial week sales for an Atlantic artist in the 15 years of SoundScan history.
