Southern Rap Hurts Hip-Hop, According to 50 Cent
Saturday March 18, 2006
In a recent interview with MTV, rap megastar and G-Unit boss - 50 Cent denigrated the southern rap genre, referring to this form of hip-hop as "simplified." The New-York rapper also reasoned that southern rappers hardly put any thought into their music because they're more engrossed with having a nice time, than actually making quality music. I don't know that 50 Cent's "In Da Club" credentials qualifies him to place judgement on southern rap, but, his own lyrics are not that sophisticated at all. Besides, if a track was designed with the dancehall in mind, then I don't want to be in the club scratching my head over its lyrical complexity. Most importantly, one barely has to research to find that the dirty south has spawned some of the most prolific lyricists in hip-hop, notably OutKast, Scarface, Cunninglinguists, Ludacris, and Supastition to name a few. If 50 Cent is really concerned with revitalising the state of southern rap, maybe he needs to start with his G-Unit dirty south artist - Young Buck.

50 cent needs 2 calm hisself down talkin bout tha durty south like that! 1st it waz us and now it’s Oprah. I really thinks he’s startin 2 bite off more than he can chew!
50 Cent days are numbered on earth, wherever he goes he has too watch over his shoulders. This one man has soooooo many enemies that he will never know who’s going to get him! He won’t be around much longer and will never have the legagcy of Tupac.
All I can say is that He & Kanye West needs to be shipped to Iraq and put on the front lines. If it was not for Southern Hip Hop, he would not have sold any records. He needs to be more worried about getting taken out the game if he keeps running his mouth about people and stuff he doesn’t know anything about. Let him step up to UGK, 8BALL & MJG, OUTKAST,3-6 MAFIA, SCARFACE,SLIM THUG, PAUL WALL, MIKE JONES, TRAE, Z-RO, T.I., LUDACRIS or any other of the southern artists and see how long he will be talking. Anyway is it just me or wasn’t he dogging Ja Rule a while back and is now doing the same thing. His last album was straight Pop & Disco. Now I ain’t sayin he’s a Bi$$h Ni$$a but he ain’t hanging with no Real Ni&&as.
50 cents has always built his fame on beef. hes not the best rapper,so why should we care about anything he sayZ !!One thing about us in the south we take care of own people,he dont get respected in his own hood ,camp ,area HE JUST TALKS ALOT OF Sh*T!!!!!THEY DONT EVEN PLAY HIS Sh*T ON THE HIP HOP STATIONZ NOMORE ,CAUSE THAT S*** TALKIN DONT WORK DOWN HERE.
Man..F**K that ni&&a fifty…he thinks he can flow..what the hells he been doin..1st all..the dumba$$ let The Game go..big mistake..game comes back with 300 bars…murders the whole gunit…second all..he gona tlk sh*t bout south…am i the only one who noticed that he got one of his gunit members from the south??? come one fifty..if neones a disgrace to rap..its yo bi^^h a$$..you fake a$$ pac wannabe..in the words of chamillionaire… “get ya mind correct” you fake phony half rappin ni&&a..
Man 50 talkin like he the best there is.. I wouldnt pay 2 quarters for his albums..thats how wack they are..the only reason I even got into gunit was cause of game..but he left them and they just crap now…50 is pure garbage like jada said…and man he talkin bout nas getting “the bi**h” tatted on his arm…atleast nas aint got Mobb Deep on his arm you fa&&ot a$$ ni^^a
Man all you guys don know wat you talking about 50 is a true ganster just watch his movie. What ever he says is gold
50 needs to get off those roids before someone blasts his dumb a**s. Don’t f**k with the south, I will punk you like Yukmouth bi**h. If not for Dre or Em, this m***f***r wouldn’t be sh*t. Yeah, his lyrics run deep, deep like paper plate. You no rhyming piece of s**t.
that n***a just mad because the south is taking over. Maybe if he would get a little flavor with his beats then maybe it might get some play in the chevy. If you ask me that cat only had one good album and that was his first the rest of them sucked. How could he even say that point being a n***a went and got the best member of G-Unit out of the south from that TN
I like 50 cent sh*t, but at the minute he aint holdin nuttin to the Southern boys. TI and Chamillionaire got some hot numbers out there, Southern Rap is taking over!
50 cent talkin s**t about the south is funny. He has a n**ga on his label from the South, who has otha ni**gas on his album from the South. If this is the only way 50 can get on the radio or tv, then his sh*t is ova period. Not even Em or Dre can save this roided up bi**ch now.
fiddy claims in his raps that he done came up but he aint changed, he was rockin his underdog shirt in power to the dollar and get rich or die tryin which was cool, now he think he is a pimp or the M this n***a done came up AND not done changing, soon he’ll be kickin it like snoop do double g. fiddy should stay street and start going back to his many men sh*t.
ATTENTION ALL O.G’S FROM THE SOUTH.50 CENT HAS VIOLATED ALL CODES OF THE SOUTH AN THEREFORE HE HAS BEEN POSTED AS PUBLIC ENEMY #1.HE HAS TOBE DEALT WITH A.S.A.P YOUNG BUCK IF YOU READ THIS PLEASE LEAVE THAT LABLE NOW.YOU ARE STILL APART OF THE SOUTH DON’T LET 50 CENT GET YOU CAUGHT UP IN THIS.THIS MATTER HAS BEEN TURNED OVER TO THE REAL BLACK MAFIA.
I’m gonna start off by sayin’ 50 cent (aka loose change) has no creativity. In order for him to make music he has to respond to a statement that was directed to him because of an insult he has stated to someone else. I think the only reason Mr.Loose Change made that statement was because he needed influence to start a new album. And remember this Mr.Loose Change this comment came from The Boot (Louisiana, New Iberia) to be exact.
Who ever controlls all of this stuff needs to get the rapper 50 cents lyrices on this website thank u
no one sells like 50 get off his nuts
Will the south ever get respect for pimpin’ different styles into the game,
or continue to be looked at as one group, one song, all dance, everything’s the same.
Ignorance is important when you don’t know what you’re talkong about,
so to all you haters, accept the south’s come-up and keep off the third route.
And for those who say the south is kllling hip hop, well hell yall don’t know s**t.
You see, suicide is a m**ha f**ka when somebnody else puts out the hit.
Complaining must be a good way to ease away the hate,
true, New York created hip hop, ran it for a good minute and now most of you are eager to close the gate.
Well, real n****s say it best everyday, everbody gota eat,
so don’t blame us if all aint hot anymore, just think before you speak.
Y is it that just cause the south is gettin more radio play right now and has more artists there “takin over hip-hop”When NY was runnin rap nobody said it then.Im from Ny so I personally hate the south but I don think hip hop is dead cause I don think the south makes rap music they make pop music. It cant b dead if thats not the music there makin. So 4 all tha people askin will the south ever get tha respect they deserve tha answer is no,not till u change ya style up and actually say somethin worth listening 2
Read the response again. I said different styles. New Yorkers think ATL rappers represent the whole scope of southern rap. Obviously that must be the only music being played on NY radio stations. Also, a lot of NY rappers are makin the same kind of music in case yall haven’t notice.
To be continued…
I wasnt talkin bout u fam but yea tha south does get played on our stations but on Hot 97 people call in all tha tyme complainin about tha current state of rap music sayin that we need to here somethin new and not tha same crap ova and ova.Tha most annoyin song is Money in tha Bank u cant even dance 2 that s*** y would I care that u got money unless we sharin tha same bank account
Who says the south doesn’t have real lyricists? For those of you who don’t have this one in ya CD collection, shut up. Group’s name, Street Military. Name of CD (EP), Don’t Give A Damn. Home, Houston, TX. Go buy it and learn some southern history. And on that note, Yall can quote me on this.
How would southern artists look if they used some of that old NY magic.
Copied it frame by frame and say “yeah, now there’s a classic.”
Would the word respect come ino play from these haters the south helped create,
or would it be better to let the word jackers flow out of yall’s mouths claimin’ the south just made a mistake.
S***, monkey see monkey do, that’s what yall say about the south,
so hell, we might as well take what yall have already done and re-up on more doubt.
Those niggas from the bottom can’t rap, they’re slicin’styles we already did,
yeah thats it, let it be known that yall are all about originality kid.
(Yall say) THe south is all about clubs while thy’re ballin’ on the scene,
now lets see, ah yes. 50 Cent plus Jim Jones equals the samething.
(Know before you speak, listen before you hear)
Bronx,NY you is a fraud.Youte da South so much, tell your Bronx legend Fat Joe to stop jockin southside swag like gold grills, swanggaz, and rappin bout candy paint on a jag.You hate da South cuz we stole ya’ll shine. No, California stole ya shine with 2pac and dr.dre, too short. Why don’t you put out a NYrecordand put NY back on da map.evry coast shine.First it was East coast, then west coast, now it’s the South and I’m sure da Midwest might be next. stop hatin and manup and congradulate da South cuz remember how hard it was for Geto Boyz and UGK to get recognition in da early 90’s.You can’t honestly say we don’t deserve the shine.
I waz born in Brooklyn but i live n H-town and i love h town muzic but no offense 2 ATL but it’s making da south look bad i hate it when ppl say da south can’t rap h-town can iam down 4 h-town but i hate ATL rap its certan ppl i like in da ATL and its true wat Bronx said ppl in NY complain all the time when they play southern hip hop(mainly ATL)ON hot 97 anewayz i know a lot of ppl frm Ny dat hate south muzic and a lot of ppl dat come 2 vist frm Ny say dat they don’t play our muzic i hate 50 and in ny we hate snap muzic but i live in h-town and i anit heard a snap sng except 4 laffy taffy but thats it its mainly n ATL so be’fo u put south on da map compare
frm dat frm BK,NY
No u don deserve any shine Tex. Ure music makes now sense at all. What did Unk say “I froze like tha wind” Tha wind doesnt freeze he sounds like a dickhead.Thats y u never hear of a southern artist being on a G.O.A.T. list except 4 maybe Scarface.U alwayz hear Bigge,Nas,Jay-Z,Chuck D,Rakim, big Daddy Kane,Pac,Snoop the list could go on but no southern artists would b on it cause they havent contributed nothing 2 tha rap game at all. Every region has at least who contributed in some way.East Coast got Nas and Jay, West side has Pac and Snoop or Dre, Midwest has Eminem and Bone Thugz but whos tha south got… Yung Joc and Ying Yang Twinz??! They have nobody just different aritists constantly cause itz so e-z 2 get signed down south, u know Joc had only been rappin 4 2 months b4 he got signed. I believe it. It def. sounds like it. He was on a list 4 1 of tha worst rap verses of all tyme, Its on this syte somewhere but I don know tha link. U need no creativity 2 b signed down there and thats tha only reason yall have so many artists. Alwayz tha same wit tha namez. It alwayz starts wit lil or Young. Young Joc, Young Jeezy,Young Dro,Lil Jon,Lil T,Lil Fate,Lil Romeo,Lil Wayne u know what F*** tha south. F*** ATL and all its whack dances how many different Lean wit it songs r there.U got Lean wit it, Doit Toit Snap yo Fingerz What tha hell is that.F*** all who support FAKE HIP-HOP F*** Southern aritists who claim there takin ova at least Chamillionaire had enough sence 2 say it wont last Ill give it till tha last quarter of 2007 F*** U and um F*** all tha NY artists who turned they back on they own city Jones, 50 and Fat Joe. We view dem as sell-outz.Im not gonna keep doin all this back and forth arguein itz pointless cause u’ll neva get it through ya thick skull.
Hold the f*** up. Man, NY, to look down on the south so much, you have nothing to back it up. No lyrics?? Ever LISTEN to Outkast? Scarface? Weezy? GOODIEMob? Just like a b**** to complain but not bring anything relevant to the table. I love my real n’s from NY (Jay, Nas, DMX, Papoose, Mano, Meth, Ghost, etc)Yall some hataz 4 real man. I live in the south and I hate some of the bs they put on to the radio, but N’s is so dumb. It aint the south you dumb asses. Its the radio, white america and commercialism thats destroying our culture. I see more people from NY in ATL than from anywhere else. Dont come in someone’s home and sh** on the couch. show some respect. Thats how WE stay divided. WE are too busy fighting each other over dumb sh** like where we from and the “type” of hip hop (cause its all our music)than focusing on the problem.. They use our love of money to divide and conquer and all the dumb ignorant comments on here show that they winning and why we as a people loosing. Smartin’ up, Ni***z!!
Bronx, if you take your head out yo azz long enough, you’d see that the south has a standard as well, Now i totally agree with a post earlier,ATL SUCKS(a city full of transplants),no need to name names they know good and damn well who they are,but our music aint hip-hop in the sense of what you kats up top would label it,its country rap tunes(pimp c response to krs-one), its about what and how we do!!!The only kat thats talking how he living is jigga man, dipshyts and the rest can cancel christmas. Its either you like it or u dont but dont shyt on the entire south, we probably hate the same shyt famo, think before you speak, and oh yeah who did platinum numbers up top???besides jigga
Damn I made a mistake when I typed my s*** I didnt mean I hate the entire south. Just ATL its just that when people say the south I usually only think of Atl but I still got love for Texas didnt mean 2 get it twisted my fault
most of da rappers in da south who are hot right now know how 2 make club bangers ill givem dat but as far as makin music dats meaningful or deep …well i think they lack in dat department with da exception of ludacris but afta dat dudes like t.i.,chamillionaire, yung joc who are out right now cant seem 2 do dat…yea yea sure u got rappers like outkast and dem who be doin dat but yall dont got rappers who can have a balance of makin commercially successful records and records dat can help u go thru certain situations…….now i think da south deserve wat dey got right now they earned it but it seems like theyve been lettin anyone in da game now….and from wat i heard hip hop as a genre is da most popular genre in da US but recently around 2005 its been declinin and dats fact and i think its cuz of certain southern rappers i aint gonna lie we here in ny need 2 step up our game 2 but i dont think dudes in da south isnt makin hip hop as exciting as we can besides do u kno any southern artist whose album has gone diamond? Not even Nelly did dat
im from the heart of north philly, right here at 15th and sus-q, all up in one of the most dangerous hoods in the country. nobody around my way listen to g unit, rock they clothes or nothin. do i listen to southern rap? YES!!! THATS ALL I LISTEN TO, BESIDES THE LOX AND MY HOMIE BEANS
I agree with you Blu. I wont defend everybody just cause they from the south. But understand too that back in the day when we got no radio play outside the south, we didn’t get play on rapcity or yo’mtv raps (yall remember them days?)we developed our own sub genre of hip hop. it was called booty shake and other derogatory terms. It was based on partying and having a good time while reppin where you from within the south. Does that not sound like the way hip hop in general developed (struggle for acceptance and fun) Most of the music being criticized now developed from that. Its not the most lyrically indebt, no. But it serves it purpose. For us in the south, its a respect thing. Especially to contribute to a culture developed by our people and to not be acknowledged or appreciated for the contribution, its disrespectful. We just want the props we deserve!! I can list songs that inspire and are relevent that never got that acknowledgement
UGK- High Life
Kilo- White Horse (remake i know)
GoodieMob- Dirty south (not cause of the name either)
To end up, show love. N****s down south are no different from my dudes up north or out west, cause in the end we all black. (Tupac and Biggie should have taught us that.) Show Love!!
1 more thing..
I hear alot of talk about numbers. gold platinum diamond… thats the sh** that got us here. was a time when units sold didnt matter. times change i know but where do we say okay the money is not as important and the contribution. If we compare units, few people outside the south are moving units right now. No downin to anybody else, just facts. But thats not what makes a good album. Its contribution. Art cannot be fully measured in dollars made or units sold but rather what it contributes. It does not have to be deep to affect people. If you dance and enjoy yourself when it plays, it served its purpose. To illustrate.. watch a kid dance to a song he or she doesnt even understand. i mean like 1 or 2 years old. All the factors that are being discussed are not relevant and a child unbiased tends to go purely off the emotion that art creates. “YOU DONT HAVE TO BUMP THIS, BUT PLEASE RESPECT IT”-Tupac
Listen to Mike That is an intelligent dude
for real. i hate most of the stuff on the radio and i am born and raised deep in the south in savannah,Ga. what i listen to is hand selected and meaningful. i dont really like the dance music, but when im in the club that what
i like, if you can feel where im coming from. most times i listen to music depended on my mood and situations in my life. i dont believe in regions f**k that its all music you like some and ya dont. dont point fingers say one part is killin hip hop, if it is dyin it is on everyone not just one. and really if you dont like hip hop that much right now make your own songs. i do and i have yet
to go wrong make music for myself. The Game Runs Off Love and Respect.
Personally, I don’t agree with 50. There are just as many bad rappers coming out of New York and the Mid-West as there are popping up in the South. I don’t think it matters where you come from, as long as you’ve got the talent to put out good music.
First of all, who listens to 50 cent but I have to say he did bring up some good points. What it comes down to is pride. Of course people from the South are naturally going to Defend their home Turf regardless of how the music sounds. Now me Being from Detroit, a few of you from New York, we all see the same thing. Its not so much that the South is Whack and Bad, its that for the good artists you do come out of the South, you incorporate the profitable “Pop” artists who come out with their Snap albums and their half ass written lyrics with the Really talented Artists. TI, Ludacris, UGK, Outkast, all get my respect as good Artists but I think when your not from the south and you think of Souther Rap, then you automatically think of Whack Ni&&as like Dem Franchise Boyz, D4L, BHI, DJ Unk and all those who make “Fad” music. They get alot more attention because thats all you here now days comin from the South. I think when you look at places like New York, Detroit, Philly, Chicago and Cleveland, we all are doing the same when it comes to tryin to get respect as a city with Talented Artists. I think we look at it as “Why is the South gettin so much air time when they have all these Whack ni&&as who make garbage “Fad” music that sounds repetitive. It also seems like down South, anybody can get a deal and thats discouraging to Midwest and East Coast Artist because our music styles are different and its not that simple in our cities. We have to come with some really good Sh_T to even be considered into the radio rotation. Bottom line is that The South does have its Talent from a select few, But those few are overshadowed by their Overly Commercial counterparts. ATL should have limited how many “Snap” and “Fad” Artists were going to come out of there.
I think 50 cent is right and flat wrong when he said this. 1ST I Don’t think is just the south ruining hip-hop today.. Look at Jim Jones ‘Ballin’ this just goes to show that hip-hop is going down hill. I do think however, southern rap is bring hip-hop down. When i say this i don’t mean the great mcees like ludacris, T.i. Outkast (personally my favorite), But i’m talking about the rappers out in front (on the radio). Rappers like Crime M.O.B. with the exceptions of thier females, D4L, Francise Boyz, DJ UNK. These are the people we here every day and are representing the south more bluntly on the radio. And to say that this is quality hip hop is just a joke in my opinon. So no the south is not killing hip-hop but the majority of people who are today seem to be coming from the south.
P.S. to Shawn P I agree with every mc you said except for mike jones. I mean please if i have to hear ‘who? Mike Jones’ again i might just kick in my stereo. Listen to his music he is definetly helping kill hip-hop.. Sry Just my opinon..

I am a south rapper thats almost finish with my album. Im from sherveport LA not new orleans i am going to bring the truth to the industy, it dont matter where ya from its about giving the fans what they want and they want good music.
SH!^ I love hip-hop I live in White Plains, NY right now (Originally From SFBay Area, CA) and I gotta say Rap is cool but seriously people like hearing bout the more important stuff like what 2 Pac Wrote… thats why he shined when he did… but once ppl start tlkn lotta S**t thats when people want something new. It gets old… I love going to a club and being able to grind n dance to a song I can actually do it to.
Man people getting the south twisted yea you got weak artists like d4l dfb,but look at what the east put out black rob,p.diddy, loon how in the hell did loon become a rapper. benzino yall call that music. The east coast has it’s trash also
50 the South has simple lyrics? This coming from a man who released The Candy Shop? 50 needs to sit his half a dollar a@# down somwhere and shut up.
READ WHAT MIKE SAID. HE’S RIGHT ON POINT. FURHTERMORE, WHY ARE ALL THESE CATS TALKING ABOUT ITS EASY TO GET A DEAL DOWN SOUTH.AINT NO MAJOR LABELS IN THE SOUTH.THEY ON THE EAST AND WEST COASTS. I WANT A BALANCE IN MAINSTREAM OUTLETS, RADIO AND VIDEO. I DONT LISTEN OR WATCH EITHER, BECAUSE ITS SO REPETITIVE.IT IS NOT EASY TO GET A DEAL DOWN SOUTH. EVERY ARTIST FROM THE SOUTH AINT SNAPPIN, POPPIN, DANCIN, AND RAPPIN ABOUT DOPE. CORPORATE DONT WANT THAT UPLIFTING MUSIC TO COME OUT OF ANYWHERE. WE ARE ALL THE SAME PEOPLE,THE SAME CAT TALKIN ABOUT HE WANNA HEAR SOME SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS MUSIC CAN NOT DENY THAT U CANT PLAY THAT TYPE OF HIP HOP IN THE DANCE CLUB.
50 is wack, acting like he’s a real lyricist. If hes the top rapper in new york i can see why they fell off. He cant even come close to touchin TI or Chamillionaire or Outkast. He’s just hating cuz they not playing his s**t “in da club” right now. After everyone saw past the “Eminem says im hot” bull crap, people realized hes not as good as we were led to blieve.
Yo 50 need this to sell records.. if he aint on someones D!ck then he cant sell a records… Wayne would put his @$$ out in a 2 bars T.I. the same.. he’s the biggest joke in remember scince Ja rule and the Inc.. congrats 50 ur a pop star…..
tupac wannabe thinkin hez tupac of the east.therel neva be anotha pac, anyweyz tryna diss everyone juss to get radio play and kicking out game and saying tha south is hurting hiphop?hes hurting hiphop jus by breathing,he should thank eminem for hiz style, and young buck for being in tha dam label cuz he could do beta by himself!50 iz tha real gimmick
It’s like D.M.X said f the beat listen to the words of the song. Now once again dont let them destroy something we created and worked so hard to build. Because just like everything else (like rock and roll)once we abanden it, they are going to come in and claim it as their creation. and about 50 cent you have to give this man credit for what he has done and is doing. We must remember what was going on at the time when G-unit first came on the scene, the brother kept the music going. Well, maybe you think Justin Timberlake is true to the game and is real Hip Hop. As the saying goes real reconize real, so if you dont know, your probally are going to wait until someone tells you.ONE!

I am late as hell on this but 50 cent should not be thought of a as a representative of hip hop north…but have you people in the south really listened to hip hip comin out of the south…..its straight up terrible…I mean facts dont lie..hip hop is not sellin because of the face southern rap is putting on it. I have no problem buying a Kanye or Common, Guru, BCC record but I cringe everytime I see a lil wayne , yung joc,ugk record….im sorry but it is what it is the south doesnt have hip hop on lock..matter of fact its slipped out your hand when guys like goodie mob decided to hang it up.
He was hatin.
For all u niggas dat think da south is bull#### we dont make sense f### u for one and like mah nigga z-ro said south sil 4 lil aka south side 4 life. im from Houston home of da hardest we have a squad we got mo rappaz in one city then tha whole nawf… Z-ro,slim thug, chamillionaire, paull wall fake ass nigga but still, trae,Big Hawk R.I.P,Dj Screw R.I.P,tha whole suc, scarface must i continue Texas and Louisiana is da south and ATL to so all u niggas from da nawf stop and get off our di## 4 real we da throwdest and we kno it and eryone who says da south aint shi# come to Htown and run yo bi### a## mouth and well shut it 4 u.. sumthin like z-ro said “if an out of bounds nigga come around hell end up on his knees and da penalty is a glock a teck a beam!!!!
people from the south are ignorant and stupid “dirtysouth4life” proves that, read what and how he types
The A and St Louis have the worst rappers. Hip Hop is about words. Would u consider Yung Joc or Murphy Lee lyricist? I swear just cause u can rhyme dont makea rapper Im From Texas but every state has better music the A. and the Lou.
Once again it is not about where you from it is about who is a good rapper. THESE DEBATES IS WHAT’S DESTROYING HIP HOP. From north, south, midwest, and west they all have lyrist but they all have garbage rappers. I represent them northmiami westside zoes. Guriella black! You better be a real haitian to be claiming zoe on your name. Don’t let us find out you fake. One…..
5-0 & Gay-Unit’s are just as terrible as the south, let’s face rap hasn’t been the same since pac & biggie died.
Kanye out did 50. And as far wack rappers outthe south thiers Souljaboy and Plies. Plies rhyme scheme is terrible. But every coast got wack rappers. Ny got 50, Yayo, and Cameron.
Truth be told, to the average listener, and the general public, it’s not hard to identify the differences between a genuine lyricists, and a commercialized rap artist. A lyricist is determined to express him/herself creatively, and descriptively, with the competitive nature to outshine others in their craft. Commercialized rappers don’t bother, their purpose for rapping is not driven by integrity, or creativity, just for the pursuit of monetary gain. Also the vast majority of record labels only want to reproduce, what currently works. This corporate mentality is what’s really damaging Hip-Hop. The artists are only pawns being forced to move in the directions of the puppeteer. The South produce’s more artists who are more driven by commercial success because their level of word play, and commitment to creating compelling lyrics are very dramatically lower than their Northern predecessors. (For the exeption of Outcast, and Scarface, and other like them.) Their lifestyle is slower paced, so that lack of intensity is reflected in their music. Ironically, they created a niche for themselves, or a comfort zone. I would still call southern music hip-hop, just a different version. One that was born of their lifestyle. N.Y breeds this competitive nature because of it’s fast paced environment. New Yorkers high energy motivates intensity, and the desire to out do one another, while in the process, New Yorkers tend to overlook the commercial value of the music, and emphasize primarily on integrity and respect of their emcee peers. Also, while inadvertently losing sight of the rest of the world’s preference in the genre. A New York artist would be satisfied with GOLD, as long as he/she is not considered to be lyrically wack. My remedy is for New Yorkers to loosen up a bit, and create happier tracks negating the usage of the “N” word, Drugs, Guns, Jail terms etc…. for the general publics satisfaction. And the South should apply more thought and insight to their music, and less songs describing a dance step. Then maybe we’ll have more of a common ground and bridge the North and South divide.
16 but Jayo Brown kick ya culo like judo stop snitchn turn pigs into menudo. Im colda than pluto stayin true though. in da souf our wallets fat like a sumo. I’m from New York and I live in Atlanta, GA. I really have no respect for Southern artist, except for Outkast, T.I., and Luda in some respects. I feel like southern hip hop all sounds the same. Most listeners from the north like lyrical complexity with a tight beat. So we bump Talib Kweli, Lupe Fiasco, Jay Z. Only reason southern music plays on the radio is because you can dance to it. People buy it cause they can dance to it. It’s not “listening music” you can just move to it.
Southern rap as a whole sounds like unintelligent babbling. I take this for example, you have Webbie’s Independent. Ok Ok hot beat, catchy, but as whole sounds like every other southern hip hop song. Kweli does a remix and uses the same beat but spits something with some meaning. Kweli’s version sounds way better.
Another thing is staying power. Think of the classic songs that still get play today, you put the song on in the club and even tho it is old it still bumps…where they from for the most part? Northern artist. Southern rap is done once the rotation on the radio is gone. You forget about the song because the next song that comes out sounds exactly the same.
Outkast gets my props though cause they switch the style up. TI even did a little of that too on his last album. But everyone else is straight garbage.
I ain’t out to blast mainstream hip hop artist either. I just think in terms of quality of music, the North takes the gold. Quality doesn’t always get airplay or record sales.
yea man i feel U..im frum B-more n i live in Florida now..
Tha South been “runnin” hip-hop as they wanna say..but 4 reel, south “rap” as they call it, is nuttin more than dances n shiit..Wayne kill it,but he mostly makin trax 4 clubs..
I respect T.I. Niggaz frum tha North B talkin reel shiit..Reel lyfe in tha hood.not cumin up w/ new dances..they speak they mind n shiit.not try 2 think bout a thing 2 make $$ than B reel..
ghettos is worse in tha North than tha south anywayy.
N evry1 frum tha south sound tha same n say tha same thing..they need a new name 4 they shiit cuz it aint rap..
i like alotta music they put out..but az far az tha dance shiit..they needa mix it up..”get silly”?? up north niggaz dont get silly..
itz all-all bout snap,pop,lean,rock..
all repeatin itself on tha radio, n it gets annoyin..
I think that 50 is right and wrong… I mean, his first album was good… but the last two were not that great. As far as southern “hip hop”, it is killing Hip Hop with the exception on T.I., Outkast, Goodie Mob, Scarface, Z-Ro, & others… I’m from Detroit, but I’ve been in Atlanta for 2 years, and the radio is horrible down here… they play the same thing all day, theres always a new song out that sounds like another Soulja Boy or D4L song and they’re not speaking on TRUE facts. A lot of people say that the north never played Outkast, but they have a new song out that is deep… but I never hear it played on the radio down here in Atlanta. To me, it seems like most of the people from the south don’t understand a Nas or jay Z song, they can’t understand the lyrics… so they listen 2 Soulja Boy or Plies. Yes, the north has its lame rappers like Mims, Jim Jones, etc… but you hardly ever find lame rappers from the north. Every coast had its turn 2 shine from the East Coast to the West Coast to the Midwest, but now the south has their chance and believe it or not their MAINSTREAM is giving Hip Hop a very bad name. And while most northern artist don’t care if their album sales or not, as long as they are great lyricist… their album ends up selling anyway, unlike the southern artist. Just look at when Hip Hop was at an all time high from 2003 and back, and compare the sales and quality of lyrics to now.And Lil’ Wayne is very overrated, he’s just like most of the other southern artist 2 me.
I am from the Midwest, and I have always been partial to East Coast & Midwest hip hop. I don’t even have to speak on the East because everybody knows the east is the Mecca of hip hop. Midwest has consistently had fire come out of it. Bone Thugs, Eminem, Crucial Conflict, Twista, Lupe, Kanye..the list goes on. Side note: Nelly, (shaking my head) why is this dude almost 40 still rapping about his J’s? A-N-Y-W-A-Y. Today, I am listening to a bunch of old cds and a lot of them are dated in 2005-06 and guess what, they are FULL of Dirty South music. One mixed cd I have has like 18 dances that came out the South in 05, a few of them I had to question WTF I was on and why I would ever listen to them. But A LOT of it I LOVED, and are going back in rotation. I wouldn’t dare say that ALL Dirty South rappers aren’t talking about anything, because that is just not true. Other people have already mentioned the HOT ones, Outkast, Face, 8Ball&MJG, Bun B..that list can go on too. It is true that there a quite a few that aren’t saying too much, but you cannot deny that the beats are banging. This may sound strang but this makes me think of Africa, and how we did it there. We were serious about our drums, and rhythm and being able to move. We did some chanting for rituals but for the most part, we were dancing and having a good time in Africa when it was time to party. I thought I needed to “come to terms” with liking Dirty South rap but the truth of the matter is hip hop is a creative force and its ever changing. True hip hop fans will accept Dirty South for what it is, a valid part of hip hop culture. Some people have the same aversion to West Coast rap. Which I also LOVE. NWA, Ice Cube, Snoop, Tupac (I know, I know he’s from NY), DJ Quik, E40, Sugafree, Game..that list TOO can go on and on. One could argue that all they talk about is bangin, but again that wouldn’t be a true statement. Being on different coasts, we have different experiences, different expressions, different styles, that’s just true of human nature in general. We are all different. We were saturated with Dirty South music over the last few years because they down there getting they money, point blank. Whatever they doing, they getting it, they paying cash for everything, and a lot of them are indie, who hates on $$$$$$$$? I mean come on….. Souljah Boy got rich off damn YouTube. He is one I do not care for, but I will never hate on that dude for getting his money. I would never hate on the South. Its a brilliant, colorful, lively, rhythmic part of hip hop. The same people that hate on the south got the south’s vocab coming out they mouth, they might even have a grill in they face, because that spread like an epidemic, and these dudes know they like them southern fed, thick women in these dudes videos, not to mention all the women all over the country spending hours in the mirror practicing that booty shake they saw in the video. One final note, Wayne is very talented, he’s just very high right now. Because he was high and not afraid to step outside of his box he can go many ways with his music. He get Andre 3000ish, or go back to the hood with it. Either way, the dude is talented. I am not mad at the South at all.
Oh one more thing. “Crack rappers” coming from all coasts. But in my opinion, nobody paints a better day in the life of a drug dealer like Jeezy. I have yet to be disappointed by anything he’s dropped and its rappers coming out of every coast, that have been in the game longer than Jeezy I can’t say that about, not even 50.
Dirty south music, with the exception of ludicris and outkast, is completely ridiculus. These guys half @$$ their music just like they half @$$ed their life. It hurts hip hop. and how can someone like lil wayne get lyricist of the year? What ever happened to the real lyricists like Nas who could tell a story backwards? How come you don’t here that ish anymore? Who said the dumb listen to the drum? hip hop is more than just a beat with a chorus a five year old can make up. They should make a whole new category for these wannabe rappers from the south.
The south is wack with the exception of T.I,Luda,Scarface,BunB and Field Mob.Eastcoast isn’t the sh*t anymore because of the mainstream and what females like.Eastcoast has the lyrics but the south has the catchy hooks with those bouncy 808 beats. As long as females, lil kids, and white people can dance and sing a long the south will be on top.Thank you Nas for selling over 500,000 units=(GOLD)and Lupe for doing the same.It aint really east or south its the wack and good hip-hop.I got a mixtape with a joint called this is he we rock by termanology feat.Bun B produced by Dj Premeir and they both did their thing over a new york sounding beat.Im from B-more and the majority of the dudes here listen to lil boosie,Weezy, plies, and gucci mane. But their is also some true hip-hop heads here also.50 has good beats but his flow is wack he let buck go now he don’t stand a chance.Eastcoast rap 4 life allday holla!!!!
first of all i am from the south born and raised new orleans ,la to be exact and for most of you up top n!$$@S don,t blame that lean with it rock with sh#! on the whole entire south listen to some trill n***s commin out the bagdad on the bayou that N.O the most gangsta city in durty ya heard me
mayne nigga need ta stop runnin his mouth mayne i aint even from da south but imma say 50 aint all dat. he kant stand up ta TI Luda UGK or ne nigga from da souf. ere budy know dat fa da longest time TI was da king of hip hop but i aint neva heard ne nigga call 50 da king a nuthing mayne. if anybody doin in da NY is jay or ll or ne body but 50 mayne tell dat bitch nigga ta shut tha fukk up
Nothing but hate this is from an old article though but I trip how cats diss the south yet they want to date a thick southern woman. If you hate the south then don’t talk to the sexy southern women down south. Me I’m cool with the music I love the south I’m going to move south and leave Hell A California. I told people this in 1992 that the south was going to be on top in rap and homies of mine laughed. But I watched this reverse migration of the great migration many friends of mine i graduated with at Crenshaw High School have gone south and many of my family memmbers returned south leaving Hell A Caliwackia. As people move you tend to look for the new thing to fit in and the south is that plus the music make you move it’s a different culture there. I trip off 50 he disses the south but yet his woman is from the south Ms Ciara. I love the south especially the thick southern women there I visit Atlanta and Jax Fl and didn’t want to leave those southern women make a brotha sprung.
I like some dirty south like OutKast. Goodie Mob, Ghetto Mafia, but like with anything you have the good and the bad. Music is music love it or hate it’s the choice is yours. Oh Fiddy I’m from the Kak so watch yo back maine.
